CIMB able to weather effects of rising tariffs

While tariffs are an external factor beyond the bank's control, Novan (left) says CIMB has levers in place to cushion potential impacts on its financial performance.
KUALA LUMPUR (July 23): CIMB Group Holdings Bhd is confident it can weather the effects of rising tariffs and economic uncertainties through a mix of income diversification, operational efficiency, and risk management, said group chief executive officer Novan Amirudin.
He said while tariffs are an external factor beyond the bank's control, it has levers in place to cushion potential impacts on its financial performance.
'We at CIMB have reconstituted our portfolio over the last few years. We've exited businesses that were very hard to operate. We've reduced our risk profile, we've reduced our credit losses, we've increased our coverage ratio.
'Our portfolio looks extremely strong and we are in a good place. And that would be one more area that can help our financial statement.
'Tariffs is one factor that would impact a company's or a bank's financials. But it's how we then choose to play with the different levers to offset that situation, and not every company is the same in that regard.
'We will do what it takes to make sure that we are resilient,' he said during the bank's Asean Media Day on Monday (July 21).
He acknowledged that rising tariff could hurt economic growth which in turn may affect loan growth but stressed that the bank is not solely dependent on loans for income.
'Around 30 per cent of our income comes from non-interest sources, such as foreign exchange, payments, and advisory fees. This has been a key part of our Forward30 strategy to rebalance income streams,' he said.
Novan added that even in a low interest rate environment where net interest margins are narrowing, CIMB is actively improving operational efficiency through tools such as technology and artificial intelligence.
'We are focused on becoming operationally efficient. That reduction in cost can help our bottom line,' he said.
He also highlighted that tariff changes often lead to shifts in supply chains, which may affect different sectors in Asean unevenly.
'Some supply chains may move out of China and redirect exports to Asean. This could increase supply in some markets, like cars for example, and affect local players. We have to watch these shifts closely,' he said.
He reiterated that tariffs are just one factor and cannot be viewed in isolation.
'There are many other things within our control. We cannot sit back and say because there are tariffs, our financials will get impacted. We will pivot our strategies and manage what we can,' he said.
He said the bank will do what it takes to be nimble, to pivot its strategies, to look at its efficiencies, portfolio, credit losses, non-interest income, and cost of funds to mitigate impacts as a result of tariffs. asean CIMB Financing tariffs

Works Ministry: MLFF toll system to use B2B model, won't cost government ‘single sen'

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — The Works Ministry is proceeding with the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) toll collection system through a direct business-to-business (B2B) model as the agreement with the original project proponent was terminated last year, Parliament heard today. Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the B2B model ensures there will be no financial outlay from the government. 'The government remains committed to implementing the MLFF system via a B2B model, with no financial burden on the government. 'Private service providers will be allowed to negotiate directly with the 33 existing highway concessionaires,' he said. Ahmad Maslan said a proof-of-concept (PoC) trial for the MLFF system is currently being conducted at the Alam Impian toll plaza on the Kemuning–Shah Alam Expressway. This trial, a collaboration with Touch 'n Go and CIMB, involves the installation of gantries and other supporting infrastructure. Responding to a supplementary question from Tanjong Manis MP Yusuf Abdul Wahab on how the system would handle toll evasion, the deputy minister explained that it will use a combination of radio-frequency identification (RFID) and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to identify all vehicles. He said those who fail to pay will receive notices, and future enforcement could include blocking road tax renewals. 'RM3.46 billion cost won't materialise' Ahmad Maslan also addressed recent concerns raised by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) regarding a previously projected cost of RM3.46 billion to the government. 'The previously mentioned RM3.46 billion cost will not materialise, as the government has decided to implement the MLFF system through a B2B model. 'This means that not a single sen of government funds will be involved,' he asserted, adding that discussions of multi-billion ringgit figures are no longer relevant. He explained that a two-year timeframe has been designated to give private service providers ample opportunity to finalise their negotiations with the highway concessionaires. In the interim, he said the ministry is working to improve existing RFID lanes and has introduced open payment systems (SPT) allowing debit and credit card use at toll booths to enhance payment flexibility.

No immediate plans for TNG Digital IPO

KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Group Holdings Bhd has no immediate plans to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) for TNG Digital Sdn Bhd. CIMB Bank Bhd and CIMB Malaysia's chief executive officer, Gurdip Singh Sidhu, said that the company is performing well, having begun to generate profit earlier this year and has already qualified as a unicorn. "The question of an IPO is something we will always assess, but it is not something we are rushing into. "At this point, the business is growing very nicely, very well. We have started making a profit after a few years of the incubation period, but we are not rushing into an IPO per se yet," he told reporters after a media panel session held on the sidelines of MyFintech Week 2025 today. The fintech firm is 45.01 per cent owned by Touch 'n Go Sdn Bhd, a CIMB Group unit. In September 2024, TNG Digital announced plans for an IPO within the next two to three years, targeting to raise over US$300 million. Earlier, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, in his special address at the MyFintech Week 2025, said the government aims to identify five unicorns by 2030. -- BERNAMA
