A RYDER CUP legend's son agonisingly missed out on qualifying for the US Open - after losing a sudden-death play-off.
His old man forged a reputation as one of Europe's great stars across his seven appearances in the competition.

Now the next generation is hoping to follow in his footsteps.
But Ian Poulter's son Luke fell just short of booking his spot in the field for the upcoming US Open.
Bryson DeChambeau will attempt to defend his crown at Oakmont next week.
Despite his best efforts, though, Poulter Jr will not be teeing it up.
Amateur Luke, 21, put himself in serious contention with a stunning bogey-free round of 65 in his second round at Emerald Dunes Golf Club on Tuesday.
That saw him finish tied fourth after 36 holes - ahead of the likes of Graeme McDowell and Nicolai Hojgaard.
But with just four spots up for grabs at the US Open, the University of Florida student went into a play-off with Austen Truslow.
Truslow has made eight PGA Tour starts.

And his experience told as he came out on top.
But for Poulter Jr, ranked as the world No3228, he can take pride from his superb effort - especially as it came just a year after suffering a stress fracture in his back.

He is now reliant on withdrawals to get into the 156-man entrants list for the US Open, what would be his golf major debut.
But dad Ian - who has 16 points and five Ryder Cup wins to his name - remains very proud of his lad's achievements.
LIV Golf rebel Poulter Sr said: "I can't believe how impressive today's 65 was to get into that position.
"We keep using this as incredible experience and we keep getting better.
"[Luke's got] an alternate spot but not sure what number it will be."
Incredibly, Poulter Jr was not the only son of a sporting father in contention.
Tyler Weaver, son of iconic jockey Jason, beat two-time major champion Zach Johnson on his way to securing US Open qualification.

Access has long been the development's main problem, with roads leading off from the busy Kingsway a long-standing issue. Nelms was involved in a war of words with civil servants back in April, with the body hitting back at his claims they were causing delays. At the time, he hit out at the amount of red tape to get projects off the ground saying: "Everybody that's going through the process in Scotland is frustrated, I think. We're not unique in that. 'Everybody I've talked to who is doing other projects, not just within the city but within Scotland, they always talk about how the process is long and arduous. 'We're trying to get things moving along. We're impatient and want things to happen much quicker. 'We are constantly driving, but we have to respect the process and that's what we're doing, to secure the next 100 years for the football club, to do all of these things for the community, to bring another asset to Dundee." Transport Scotland have long argued they haven't been given enough detail to pass the plans as workable. And after being presented with the latest proposal - put forward by Nelms in conjunction with transport advisers Systra - TS have once again booted it out. They said: 'Transport Scotland notes with concern that the submission currently lacks sufficient detail to demonstrate the potential impacts of the proposed development on the trunk road network. Dark Blue Property Holdings, the company planning to build the stadium Dundee will rent, have ploughed millions into the project already and will now prepare another transport assessment for submission later this month. Dundee City Council is due to hear their application but have yet to fix a date while the access saga rumbles on. Emma Raducanu most confident about US Open chances since 2021 slam win
Emma Raducanu said she will return to New York feeling calmer and more confident about herself and her prospects at the US Open than she has since she won the title there four years ago. She put together a brilliant performance against Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of the Cincinnati Open on Monday, narrowly losing 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (5) after three hours and nine minutes. Her impressive level was a reflection of the significant progress she has made in a positive summer on the North American hard courts. 'This year is my first year on tour playing most of the calendar,' she said. 'I had a tough start to the year and it was very difficult to change that. But in the last few months I've been building and the level has been increasing. The players I'm losing to, they're all top players so that gives me confidence.' The confidence Raducanu is competing with marks a significant contrast to her inconsistent presence on tour last year due to injuries and training blocks scheduled during the season. The 22-year-old did not compete for four weeks in the lead-up to the US Open last year, where she lost in the first round to Sofia Kenin. 'Last year I didn't play these tournaments, I went home and and came back and it was a really difficult time in New York,' she said. 'Since I won the tournament, it's not been easy for me there. But this year I feel different, I'm a lot calmer behind the court. 'On the court, I take more confidence in the big moments. I've been playing those big points pretty well for the most part so I'm looking forward to having some time to practise, improve and then get ready to play there.' However, numerous players could still overtake her at the Cincinnati Open this week. Either way, her positive progress and form mean that few players would be keen to face her early in New York.
