Kellie Finlayson shares emotional update about the challenges she faces following terminal cancer diagnosis

Daily Mail02-07-2025
Kellie Finlayson has revealed the emotional challenges of dealing with her terminal cancer diagnosis in a candid new interview.
The AFL WAG, 29, who is married to Port Adelaide star Jeremy Finlayson, is battling stage four bowel and lung cancer and has undergone thoracic surgery in recent months.
She was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021 and revealed in 2022 that the illness had spread to her lungs.
Appearing on the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show podcast's Safe Space series, Kellie, who was promoting her new memoir There Must Be More, said that she was 'thriving' in the wake of her diagnosis.
When Jess asked Kellie what she meant by 'thriving', she said it was all about changing her frame of mind.
From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop.
'It completely comes from mindset,' she said.
'I feel like I still live each day the same as that I used to, if not with more life, if that makes sense,' she said.
'I turned a really s***ty situation into a pretty incredible one and a really powerful one with a lot of purpose.'
Kellie added that one of the challenges of battling cancer could be how the diagnosis robs the sufferer of agency.
'We don't get many choices when we're diagnosed. We get start this treatment or die, essentially. They're your options - get really, really sick from this treatment, or don't be here anymore,' she said.
Kellie added that one choice still in front of her was how she chose to fight the disease emotionally.
'The only choice I guess I did have was how I responded to that and how I almost copped it on the chin – like an insult,' she said.
'[I] got on with life and did the things I could do to make each day okay initially and now great.'
'It completely comes from mindset,' she said. 'I feel like I still live each day the same as that I used to, if not with more life, if that makes sense.'
Jess then asked Kellie if she had ever experienced "why me?" moments with the WAG replying that, it all comes down to mindset.
'I've had my "why me?" moments obviously. If I hadn't I'd be a bloody psychopath,' she admitted.
'It did take me a little bit of time, but I realised that I could flip that and have more of the 'why not me?' approach.
'Multiple people are diagnosed every single day with this exact cancer. Why shouldn't it be me? Why shouldn't it be someone that can give so much purpose to it? Someone that can thrive with it?
'Why should it be an 80-year-old woman that is so frail that she'll probably last three months and give us another bad statistic?'
Kellie's candid admission comes after she recently gave a heartbreaking insight into what she thinks about while undergoing chemotherapy.
Speaking with Woman's Day in April, she revealed there's a moment in the memoir where she writes about a time she 'didn't want to wake up' and 'asked the nurses to turn off the machines'.
'I talk about the days I didn't want to wake up and a time I asked nurses to turn off the machines. There are emotions there Jeremy didn't even know I had,' Kellie told the magazine.
'It was a very naked feeling when it was released but it's also the best thing I've ever done. People can understand where I've been.'
In March, Kellie revealed she had undergone a VATS procedure to remove a piece of tissue from her lungs. VATS stands for Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery, which is a form of keyhole surgery.
She revealed that doctors had removed metastatic tissue from her lungs.
Metastatic tissue occurs when cancer cells spread from a primary tumour to other areas in the body to form new tumours.
The young mum published a clip of herself lying in a hospital bed, writing: 'Me a week ago'.
In the next frame, Finlayson looked bright and well, sharing a brief clip of two scars on the left side of her rib cage following the surgery.
'Just over a week ago I was having a VATS wedge resection on my right lung to remove Mets and send off tissue to pathology in hope for more answers/better treatment plans,' Kellie captioned the video.
'I've had soooo many people checking in to see how I'm doing, thank you!!!
'And honestly, I'm so fine. Which I know is incredible given the major surgery I've just undergone and I know not everyone is as lucky. But hey, I'll take the wins when I can get them in this never-ending experience.'
Kellie and Jeremy tied the knot in March 2023, in an intimate ceremony at South Australia's Tennyson Beach.
They share daughter Sophia, three, who was born in 2021, just months before Kellie was first diagnosed.

Tyra Banks reveals dirty habit live on Today show leaving viewers feeling 'sick'

Tyra Banks managed to gross out Jenna Bush Hager and the studio audience with her on-air confession Monday that she 'cleans' food crumbs leftover on her bed at her Sydney home 'by eating them.' The 51-year-old supermodel-turned-presenter isn't alone either as her mother Carolyn London and nine-year-old son York Banks Asla share her odd habits of eating ice cream and popcorn in bed, and whatever remains 'a couple days later.' 'A few days if it's not super perishable,' Tyra noted while guest-hosting TODAY with Jenna & Friends on Monday. 'Like a popcorn? I mean, come on. That's like astronaut food. It just lasts forever. You just pick it up. I'm not joking.' Gagging, Jenna asked: 'A week later you would go and eat that?' 'Yeah, if I knew it was mine in my bed, yeah,' Banks replied. The two-time Daytime Emmy winner went on to explain that she does the same on her floor since she has a 'no shoe rule' and doesn't want 'roaches.' 'I have a no shoe rule in my home so I can eat off my floor,' Tyra stressed. 'No, but I'm serious, I do that. But then I see my son doing it and I'm like, "Don't do that!" And he's like, "Mama, you do it!"' On the Jenna & Friends Instagram account, users were horrified like @randirobson who commented with a nauseated emoji: 'Disgusting! Would never eat in bed and then eat the crumbs later.' 'I eat in bed all the time,' Instagram user @madijayne wrote. 'But I'm not leaving popcorn in it for a few days.' Instagram user @desalvoshirley commented: 'No way do I want food in my bed! Yikes!' Over on X, user @mozingo_84 posted a cringing meme. 'Wow, Tyra eating crumbs off the floor is wild,' X user @Bintmetax scoffed. 'Definitely not a pest control hack I'd try!' X user @blackgypsy71 posted a vomit emoji and simply wrote: 'Nasty.' The SMiZE & DREAM founder has four more days of grossing out Jenna as she is serving guest host duties all week. A Minute With: Musician and writer Tim Minchin looks back

LONDON, July 28, 2025 - Tim Minchin's latest album "Time Machine" is a collection of songs that the now successful 49-year-old wrote, but never recorded, back in his twenties, when he couldn't get a record deal. After gaining critical success as a comedian in 2005, the British-Australian Minchin went on to write the music and lyrics for hit West End musical "Matilda the Musical" and signed with record label BMG in 2020. In an interview with Reuters, Minchin reflects on his new record as well as his songwriting and views on social media. Below are excerpts edited for length and brevity. Q: Your album is out, how does that make you feel? "I feel really reflective. But also I've reached a point in my career ... where I just feel like ... here's my offer ... and because I don't read social media anymore and I won't read reviews, it's just out in the world... And hopefully people listen to it." Q: How would you describe your music? "I think the way I use words is slightly different from a lot of singer/songwriters... Most pop songs, they're broad, you can hear in them what you want ... whereas mine are like - ''oh no, this is what the song's about'." Q: Is there a difference writing music for yourself or characters such as Matilda? "I always feel like in a way, I'm placing myself in someone else's shoes... some of my songs are really personal and they're really about me. But it is a craft - songwriting - and that can mean placing yourself in a particular emotional state." Q: What makes you feel inspired at the moment? "My job is to put good ideas into the world and beautiful stories and make people feel things... That job of spreading empathy and joy and laughter and emotion and if I can do that and feel optimistic ... then I'm one person not being a cynic." Q: Do you wish you had released this album in your twenties? "The greatest thing that ever happened to me is not getting success (then) ... it's terrible for people... I'm very happy that I'm just gently putting these songs out into the world (now)."

Julian McMahon's daughter honors late father with heartbreaking birthday tribute... three weeks after his death

Julian McMahon's daughter Madison shared an emotional tribute to her late father on what would have been his 57th birthday. Just weeks after his passing following a private battle with cancer, the 25-year-old shared a touching image with her dad, alongside a heartfelt caption on Sunday. 'Dad, happy birthday,' Madison began. 'There will never be enough words to describe how much I miss you. And somehow, even less that capture how deeply I love you.' She continued: 'All I know is that I'll miss you and love you forever.' Madison, who Julian shared with his ex-wife Brooke Burns, chose Ray Stevens' 1968 track, For He's a Jolly Good Fellow, to accompany the tribute. Julian, best known for his roles in Charmed and Nip/Tuck, died on July 2 from lung metastasis due to head and neck metastatic cancer. Julian and his daughter, Madison, appeared to have a very loving relationship. Just a few months before his shocking death, he praised her for accomplishing her dream of teaching her first yoga class. Under her Instagram post reflecting on the personal achievement, he commented: 'You're awesome.' In June, he publicly consoled Madison over the death of her dog, Sandy, another one of her social media posts. Julian's death was confirmed earlier this month by his wife, Kelly McMahon (née Paniagua), in a statement to Deadline. 'With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,' Kelly wrote. 'Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible,' she continued. 'We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories.' To mark his birthday, Julian's family also shared a message on his official Instagram page encouraging fans to support an environmental cause close to his heart, a petition to protect the Tasman Sea in his native Australia. 'Julian loved returning home to Australia for @thesurferfilm,' the post read. 'To be surrounded by wonderful creators, @lorcanfinnegan as well as Australian beaches and wildlife, brought him great joy.' 'Happy Birthday Julian,' the caption concluded. Under the post, tributes also poured in from Julian's friends and former co-stars across the entertainment industry. Charmed alum Rose McGowan wrote in the comments, 'Happy birthday dear Julian. Sending peaceful energy your family and friends today. Thinking of your brilliant laugh. Donating in your name x.' Alyssa Milano, who also starred on Charmed, added, 'Happy Birthday, Pal. Thank you, Kelly. Love you all so much.' Kelly Carlson, who starred opposite Julian as Kimber on Nip/Tuck, remembered their special connection and creative chemistry on set. 'Happy Birthday Julian. Thank you for great memories and so many laughs. Not to mention the reason Kimber stayed on N/T. So grateful for all of it,' Carlson wrote.
