How scientists accidentally turned lead into gold

Modern-day science accidentally achieved what medieval alchemists dreamed of doing by turning lead into the tiniest bit of gold.
Scientists with CERN, a particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, said they confirmed the change of lead into gold using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC is the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, which can beam particles at close to the speed of light before they collide, but more often miss without touching.

According to CERN, the brief and tiny transformation to gold happened through "near-miss collisions" between lead nuclei in the LHC.
The LHC contains four detectors, including one known as A Large Ion Collider Experiment, or ALICE. The team said ALICE measured the production of gold when they counted the number of photon-nucleus interactions resulting in the emission of zero, one, two and three protons, accompanied by at least one neutron. These are associated with the production of lead, thallium, mercury and gold. The results showed that Run 2 of the LHC, between 2015 and 2018, produced gold at a maximum rate of about 89,000 nuclei per second from lead–lead collisions at the ALICE detector collision point.
"Gold nuclei emerge from the collision with very high energy and hit the LHC beam pipe or collimators at various points downstream, where they immediately fragment into single protons, neutrons and other particles," officials at CERN said. "The gold exists for just a tiny fraction of a second."
The amount of gold produced wouldn't make anyone rich because it was trillions of times less than what would be needed to make a single piece of jewelry. In terms of mass, the amount of gold was about 29 picograms (2.9 ×10-11 g). One picogram is one-trillionth of a gram.

Still, the long-awaited achievement is something to be celebrated for these tiny interactions and what the powerful instruments can detect.
"Thanks to the unique capabilities of the ALICE ZDCs, the present analysis is the first to systematically detect and analyse the signature of gold production at the LHC experimentally," Uliana Dmitrieva, of the ALICE collaboration, said in a statement.

Americans have long heard about the health benefits of adhering to diets rich in fresh produce and whole grains and low in red meat and processed sugars. But they may not be aware of how meal timing can affect their health. A recent publication from the UF/IFAS department of food science and human nutrition describes chrononutrition, an emerging field of study that connects eating with circadian rhythm, the body's 24-hour internal clock. How someone schedules meals throughout the day can impact their weight and body mass index (BMI) as well as increase their odds of developing cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, according to the authors of the publication, an Ask IFAS guide. 'Healthy eating is not only what you eat but also how much you eat and when,' said doctoral candidate Kaylyn Koons, the publication's lead author. Franz Halberg, a Romanian-born physician, introduced the idea of chrononutrition in 1967. The concept is based on the premise that the sleep and wake cycle regulates bodily functions, including metabolism and digestion, so the timing, frequency and consistency of food intake affects health. There is a broad range of eating behaviors that influence chrononutrition, according to the UF/IFAS guide. One of the key behaviors relates to the 'eating window,' the time frame between the first meal of the day and the last. Optimizing that window — typically between 8 and 12 hours — could realign food intake with the circadian clock. In fact, a systematic review of studies on time-restricted eating with an eating window of 12 hours or less found an average weight loss of 3%, along with reductions in fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, waist circumference, and LDL cholesterol levels. Many eating behaviors related to poor chrononutrition center around evening food consumption. Eating at or after 8 p.m. is associated with weight gain and metabolic disorders, for example. Potential reasons include the prevalence of poorer food choices at night and late eaters' propensity to stay up late, which can negatively impact sleep. Evening latency, the amount of time that lapses between eating the last meal of the day and sleeping, can also play a part, according to the guide. It describes a 2023 study of Malaysian college students which found that those who didn't observe a delay between eating dinner and sleeping were more likely to be underweight. 'This finding may seem counterintuitive because you might expect this behavior would reduce energy expenditure and promote weight gain rather than weight loss,' Koons said. 'But it could be associated with other adverse chrononutrition habits such as skipping meals or irregular meal timing, which lead to an overall reduced calorie intake.' Koons recommends anyone desiring to improve their chrononutrition examine their eating behaviors and identify chrononutrition-related behaviors that may be negatively affecting their health. Then they can set attainable goals to reduce the frequency of those behaviors. Patience is key, however, she said. 'Eating habits tend to be ingrained in routine and become habitual,' Koons said. Well, AI is definitely entering — and improving — your life, whether you choose it or not. When I first wrote about ChatGPT several years ago, AI was viewed as a powerful tool to collect information from huge databases and sort it out to provide answers to questions. Since then, AI has quickly morphed into a useful tool for business and individuals, creating accurate and life-like interactions that make outcomes easier. For example, the new Social Security commissioner, a former tech payments CEO, has announced that Social Security will soon be using AI in its call centers. If the idea of talking to a 'robot' sends chills down your spine, think again. In this column, I'll show you a company that is already using AI in its call center — and generating responses that truly make you think you're talking to a helpful person. A reality check It's a generational thing. When I want help after calling a toll-free number for product information or credit card adjustments or insurance issues, I want to talk to an intelligent human being. I guess there aren't enough to go around! One of my pet peeves is being transferred to a voice messaging system that tries to 'help' me decide how to get answers to a simple question. They offer five choices, none of which is helpful. Representative, please! The only thing worse than a voice-activated decision tree is getting transferred to a live person who just happens to live in a foreign country and who is obviously responding off a script. If I ask to talk to a supervisor, I'm told there is no supervisor available! Don't these companies care about their customers? (Insert your own swear word here!) Artificial intelligence that's real So I must say I was absolutely shocked to hear a demonstration of AI being used by eHealth to start the process of guiding seniors to the appropriate choices for Medicare programs. For many years, eHealth has been a popular health insurance marketplace that helps people find the right insurance coverage by comparison-shopping plans from more than 180 insurers for coverage ranging from Medicare Advantage and supplemental plans to individual and family health policies, along with other benefits such as dental and vision. Many people access eHealth through its website, Others use their toll-free number 1-800-EHEALTH (1-800-343-2584) to reach their licensed and helpful insurance agents. Getting to the agent licensed in your state of residence, and knowledgeable about your specific product request, could take a lot of time during busy days around Medicare enrollment. And what about calls that come in late at night? That's why eHealth created 'Alice' — an AI 'agent' who does not actually sell insurance policies but who asks relevant questions to direct you to the correct licensed agent. You'd swear that you are talking to a live person, since 'her' responses are not only appropriate but friendly. Listening to the demo that eHealth sent me, I was absolutely blown away. I knew that you'd want to hear the same thing, so if you are reading this column online at my website you can click on this link in the article. In this case, an audio demo is worth a thousand words! Even if you're not shopping for health insurance, I recommend listening to this short clip of an interaction between someone calling the toll-free line late at night and the AI agent, Alice. This company has taken AI to the next level. Suddenly, you'll understand how much more helpful an AI agent can be than a call center in the middle of nowhere! And, on a personal level, you'll see how AI has so much potential to change our lives for the better (yes, or for the worse). I spoke with Ketan Babaria, chief digital and AI officer of eHealth. He notes that while AI is not (yet) selling policies, it is making a big difference in their processes: 'Our new AI agents are trained to be patient, caring and sympathetic. As a result, we are making it easier and faster for people to start the shopping process for a Medicare plan, enabling them to more quickly connect with a licensed agent who can help them comparison shop for the right health coverage.' So the next time you hear that your call will be answered by AI, don't hang up in fear, hoping that the next time you'll get a 'real person.' Odds are that soon you'll be connecting with many AI agents. And the odds are even better that you'll get the correct answer from a compassionate robot than you'd get from the overworked and underinformed call center worker. That's The Savage Truth.
