Asia Cup 2025: Is Rinku Singh no more India's trusted T20I finisher?
The fearless, free-flowing Rinku who lit up stadiums two summers ago has looked out of touch for both India and the Knight Riders, leaving fans to wonder whether the spark that once promised so much is slipping away too soon.Tale of two halvesRinku Singh's T20I career so far can almost be split into two contrasting halves. The first half was a dream run, a golden phase where everything he touched seemed to turn into runs. Until the T20I series against Bangladesh last year, Rinku's numbers were nothing short of phenomenal — 479 runs from 19 innings at an average of 59.87 and a staggering strike-rate of 175.45, with three fifties to his name. At that point, he looked unstoppable, India's next great T20 finisher in the making. But what followed has been a sharp and worrying dip. Since that high, Rinku has struggled to rediscover his rhythm, and the slump has been glaring. In India's last two bilateral T20I series against South Africa and England, he endured a nightmare.Across seven games, the left-hander managed just 67 runs at a meagre average of 13.40, with his strike-rate plummeting to an underwhelming 101.51. The South Africa tour was especially painful to watch — Rinku scraped together only 28 runs at an average of 9.33, striking at a disastrous 82.35.What has gone wrong with a batter who once looked untouchable? Has the pressure of expectations weighed him down, or have bowlers simply figured him out too quickly?advertisementIndia Asia Cup 2025 Squad Announcement: Live UpdatesRinku Singh in T20Is until October 12, 2024Matches: 26, Innings: 19, Not Outs: 11, Runs: 479, Highest Score: 69, Average: 59.87, Strike-rate: 175.45, Hundreds: 0, Fifties: 3Rinku Singh in T20Is from October 13, 2024Matches: 7, Innings: 5, Not Out: 0, Runs: 67, Highest Score: 30, Average: 13.40, Strike-rate: 101.51, Hundreds: 0, Fifties: 0Poor IPL seasons not helping RinkuApart from international cricket, Rinku Singh hasn't really found his spark in the IPL either. What went wrong for one of India's most exciting finishers? In IPL 2024, he endured a nightmare run — just 168 runs at a meagre average of 18.66.The season before wasn't much brighter, with only 206 runs at 29.42. Even more alarming, Rinku hasn't crossed fifty in his last 28 IPL outings. The main contributor behind Rinku's dwindling form is the position that he has batted in. With the IPL allowing for a substitution in their line-up, it has seldom occurred that Rinku has come out to bat at 4 or 5.In only one game in the entirety of IPL 2025, Rinku batted at No. 4. In most of the matches, he batted at No. 6, and sometimes was even demoted to No. 7 and No. 8 positions in the line-up.advertisementIt was only once in IPL 2025 that Rinku played more than 20 balls. That game yielded him results, where he was able to score 36 runs at a strike rate of 144. KKR won that match. The game after that, Rinku once again lit up the crowd with an innings of 19* off 10 balls against Rajasthan Royals, a game that KKR won by just a single run. However, Rinku was dropped to No. 7 and No. 8 right after that. The lack of playtime hurt his confidence in the IPL, something from which he was not able to recover.Rinku Singh's IPL career in brief since 20222025 – Matches: 13, Runs: 206, Avg: 29.42, Highest Score: 38*2024 – Matches: 15, Runs: 168, Avg: 18.66, Highest Score: 262023 – Matches: 14, Runs: 474, Avg: 59.25, Highest Score: 67*2022 – Matches: 7, Runs: 174, Avg: 34.80, Highest Score: 42*Once hailed as India's next great T20 finisher, Rinku Singh now finds himself battling questions of form, confidence, and consistency. The fearless stroke-maker who once thrived under pressure has looked tentative in recent outings, both internationally and in the IPL.Should the selectors take a leap of faith, hoping he can rediscover his spark on a big stage like the Asia Cup? Or would it be wiser to back in-form contenders who offer reliability right now? The decision isn't just about numbers—it's about belief in whether Rinku's best days are still ahead of him.- EndsMust Watch

India Asia Cup 2025 Squad: Shubman Gill back in T20I team as vice captain as Suryakumar Yadav leads
India Squad for Asia Cup 2025: The BCCI on Tuesday announced the Indian squad for the Asia Cup, bringing an end to months-long speculation and rumours. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team while Shubman Gill will be his deputy. Gill returned to the T20I set up after leading India in the Test format against England where they tied the series 2-2. Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, missed out while Kuldeep Yadav came back into the team after missing the England T20I series at the beginning of the year. After the recent geopolitical tensions between Pakistan and India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had threatened to pull out of the ACC general body meeting that was slated to be held in Dhaka on Wednesday, chaired by ACC president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi. However, with the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket chiefs attending the meeting through video conferencing, the schedule for the September event was finalised. With only six months left until the next T20 World Cup iteration to be played in India and Sri Lanka, the continental tournament will return to the T20 format. The previous edition of the Asia Cup was played in the ODI format on the road to the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where India demolished hosts Sri Lanka to lift the title. While the BCCI are the designated host, the tournament will be played in a neutral setting in the United Arab Emirates with eight teams in contention. Besides India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh the competition will comprise Hong Kong, UAE and Oman. India and Pakistan last met in an ODI during the Champions Trophy, with India beating Pakistan by six wickets on the back of Virat Kohli's century. Their last T20 meeting came during the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York with a Rohit Sharma-led Indian side edging their rivals by six runs. Full squad: Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh

Shubman Gill Snubbed As Ambati Rayudu Picks India's Next ODI Captain
The entire country is excited to know what will be India's squad for the Aisa Cup 2025, which will kick-start from September 9 in the UAE. With the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma in contention, there are chances that Test skipper Shubman Gill might get snubbed. Gill, who had a brilliant outing with the bat during the recently-concluded Test series against England, is not certain about his spot in the team. Apart from Gill, another big name who is not a certainity is of batter Shreyas Iyer. Iyer proved his worth as one of the best T20 captains after he led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and took Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. Recently, former India batter Ambati Rayudu stated Iyer should be named as India's new ODI captain after the retirement of Rohit Sharma. "Iyer, he has got an extraordinary calmness. He first captained KKR as the champions and then Punjab. The way he led a young team to the final of the tournament. I mean, nobody had imagined that. Very soon he should be made the captain," said Rayudu on Shubhankar Mishra's podcast. Ambati Rayudu said Shreyas Iyer should be next ODI captain of indian cricket team 🇮🇳 #ShreyasIyer #apmbatirayudu — Horizon (@hype_edittz) August 18, 2025 Iyer continued to dominate ODI cricket this year, finishing as India's top run-getter and overall second-highest run-getter in their CT 2025 title win, scoring 243 runs in five matches and innings at an average of 48.60 with two half-centuries and a best score of 79. Later, in IPL 2025, Iyer ended up as the sixth-highest run-getter and had his best season, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at an average of 50.33, strike rate of 175.07 and six fifties. His best score was 97*. He played a massive role in taking PBKS to their first IPL final since 2014, but the team fell short by six runs to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

WATCH: Travis Head accounts for bizarre run out of Prenelan Subrayen in 1st AUS vs SA ODI
Australia's Travis Head accounted for a bizarre yet brilliant run out of South Africa's Prenelan Subrayen in the 1st ODI between the two teams at Cairns. In the 49th over, Head was bowling to Wiaan Mulder with Subrayen at the non-striker's end. In the last ball of the over, Mulder stepped out down the track and hit a shot right back at Head who managed to flick the ball back onto the stumps at the non-striker's end with his hand. Subrayen who had his bat in the air when the bails lit up, had no choice but to return back to the dug out. Head finished his spell with 4 wickets even as South Africa managed to post a formidable 296/8 in their allotted 50 overs. 'I don't know,' said Head when he was asked if he knew he would be bowling so much in the match. 'It was probably in the bingo card this morning, the wicket was a bit slow and they perhaps needed my spin. Looks like a slow wicket, so the batting PP will be the time to score, me and Mitch must start well, the older ball could be a bit tougher to score runs, need to build partnerships and chase this score down,' he added. OH MY GOODNESS HOW HAS TRAVIS HEAD DONE THAT! @BKTtires | #PlayoftheDay | #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 19, 2025 Earlier, pace bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out with an ankle injury in a major setback for South Africa just as the three-game ODI series got underway against Australia on Tuesday. The Australians, coming off a 2-1 win in the T20 series, won the toss and elected to field in Cairns to start the one-day international portion of the tour. This is the first ODI between the teams since Australia beat South Africa in the 2023 World Cup semifinals. Their scheduled Champions Trophy meeting in March was washed out. The 30-year-old Rabada underwent scans on Monday which confirmed inflammation in his right ankle. Rabada will stay with the team in Australia and undergo rehabilitation. Kewena Maphaka, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in last week's T20 series, replaced Rabada in the squad but was left out of the playing XI for the first ODI.
