Meet Salesforce billionaire Marc Benioff's wife, Lynne: a philanthropist who's joined her partner in giving vast sums to charity, her difficult pregnancy highlighted patient care in hospitals

Marc Benioff is considered one of the most flamboyant billionaires in the US. He wears loud Hawaiian shirts, gives interviews via text during massages and has been called one of the most 'quotable' Silicon Valley bosses by The New York Times. Benioff, who worked with
Larry Ellison at Oracle, co-founded business management platform Salesforce and is now worth an estimated US$9 billion, says Forbes.

But much of his life, and that of his wife Lynne, has been dedicated to giving back. The couple are philanthropists and have donated millions of dollars to causes they believe in, even establishing a new charity business model that big corporations have adopted.

While Benioff, 60, isn't afraid to speak his mind on politics and the economy, little is known about his private life. Here is what we know about Lynne, his wife and partner in philanthropy.

In 2003, in a profile piece on CNN, Benioff said he spent his spare time at his oceanfront villa in Hawaii. The billionaire said he and Lynne practised yoga together, or spent their time swimming with dolphins. According to Business Chronicler, the couple married in Hawaii in 2006 and have two children. Per The New York Times,
Stevie Wonder performed at their wedding.

Per the Salesforce website, the couple have been donating to various charities in Hawaii for more than 20 years. Last year, they announced a US$150 million donation to 'increase healthcare access, address critical infrastructure gaps and help ensure excellent and continuous care for communities in the state'. The couple also bought and gave away more than 178 hectares of land to a local non-profit organisation. The Benioffs said the idea was to drive the expansion of affordable housing. The donation means they have now given more than US$250 million towards aid in the state.

Microsoft cuts hundreds more jobs after firing 6,000 last month

Microsoft cut hundreds more jobs just weeks after its largest lay-off in years, underscoring the tech industry's efforts to trim costs even as it ploughs billions of dollars into artificial intelligence (AI) Advertisement More than 300 employees were told their positions had been eliminated on Monday, according to a Washington state notice reviewed by Bloomberg. A Microsoft representative said the latest headcount reduction was in addition to the 6,000 job cuts announced last month. 'We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,' the person said. The artificial intelligence boom has roiled the tech labour market because companies are prioritising AI-focused jobs and harnessing the technology to save money. Microsoft and peers including Meta Platforms have touted the effectiveness of AI-assisted coding tools in speeding up the software development process. Last week, Salesforce said the internal use of AI allowed it to hire fewer workers. Advertisement Microsoft's previous lay-offs fell hardest on software engineers. It could not be determined what kind of jobs were affected on Monday. As of June 2024, the company had about 228,000 full-time employees, 55 per cent of whom were employed in the US.

'Kramer vs Kramer' director Robert Benton dies aged 92

'Kramer vs Kramer' director Robert Benton dies aged 92 Benton was also known for the 1984 film "Places in the Heart". File photo: AFP Robert Benton, the Oscar-winning writer and director of "Kramer vs Kramer," has died in his US home, his representative said on Tuesday. He was 92. Benton was also known for the 1984 film "Places in the Heart" and had extensive writing and directing credits for influential movies throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The New York Times reported Benton died on Sunday. Hillary Bibicoff from the law firm Feig Finkel, which represented him, confirmed his death to AFP. Benton co-wrote Arthur Penn's groundbreaking crime thriller "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) -- starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty -- with David Newman. But he is probably best known for his script and direction on "Kramer vs Kramer," the 1979 film that offered an unflinching look at divorce and became one of the most awarded films of its time. It picked up nine Oscar nominations, and brought home five -- Benton's Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman, Best Supporting Actress for Meryl Streep and the year's grand prize of Best Picture. He and Newman co-wrote Peter Bogdanovich's "What's Up, Doc?," which was released in 1972, the same year that Benton made his directorial debut with "Bad Company." In 1978, Benton teamed up again with Newman and Newman's wife Leslie to write the screenplay for "Superman" (1978) starring Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando and Margot Kidder. Despite coaxing Oscar-winning performances out of a host of 20th century legends of the silver screen, Benton was known in Hollywood as a self-effacing director. "There are directors who can get great performances out of actors. I am not one of them," the filmmaker once said. Appearing at a fan event in Hollywood in 2018, he remained modest about his stellar career. "I have found actors -- through luck, through the judgment of casting directors or through my own instinct -- that are extraordinarily good," he told the crowd. "There's a thing you've just got to gamble with, and when you see it and it works, it's brilliant." Asked how he got some of Tinseltown's biggest stars to perform for him, he deadpanned: "I tried not to get in their way... that's not so easy." The Times reported Benton is survived by his son, John. His wife of six decades, Sallie, died in 2023. (AFP)

Frederick Christ Trump Sr was born in New York in 1905. He was just 15 and still at school when he started his own construction company. His meteoric rise in the construction world saw him build more than 27,000 apartments in the two boroughs, with The New York Times calling him 'one of New York City's major postwar builders'. Despite his enormous wealth, Fred was described as a 'frugal' man by those who knew him.
