How a 12-Year-Old's Side Hustle Makes Nearly $50,000 a Month

Entrepreneur21 hours ago

When Madden Forrest, 12, and his dad, Steven Forrest, 35, started breaking cards — purchasing and opening the sealed products to reveal their contents — it was just for fun. Pokémon cards were first, followed by football. Then Madden watched TikTok creators who livestreamed the process and sold cards to interested buyers.

Madden asked his dad if they could try it themselves, and in October of 2024, the side hustle was born.
"We didn't know what we were doing," Steven tells Entrepreneur. "We saw other people doing it. Everyone was ripping this one particular box — it was a Costco [football card] box exclusive. You could only get them from Costco; we didn't even have a Costco membership. We just posted on Facebook, and a buddy of mine hit me up and said, 'Hey, I can get 10 of them at Costco right now.'"
Those 10 boxes cost about $1,000, and the investment paid off: The father-son side hustlers sold them in one afternoon.
Soon after, Madden and Steven replicated the success with a $500 card set purchase from Sam's Club.
Because TikTok prohibits minors from hosting livestreams, Steven took the lead in front of the camera on the Bull Island Breaks account (named for their city in Virginia), and he continues to do so.

Fueled by the early success, Madden and Steven kept at the hustle, breaking both single packs and hobby boxes, which can retail for thousands of dollars.
" Most average people can't afford to buy a whole box and risk it," Steven explains, "so we do breaks. Everyone buys a team from the NFL, and then if their card hits, they get that card. If it doesn't hit, we give them free cards. I've got over 50,000 from my collection from when I was a kid. So we just give them to people for free."

The father-son entrepreneurs dabbled in selling baseball and basketball cards but continued to see the most success with football, which they attribute to the fact that they "live and breathe" the sport. On a typical Sunday, the Forrests tune into football from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., sometimes even earlier if there's an international game in the morning.

From October to December, Steven says they were "half-in" on the side hustle, riding a lot of demand that came with the holiday season and wondering if it was just a lucky streak. However, any questions about Bull Island Breaks' potential were cleared up on New Year's Eve — thanks in part to fewer sellers online, the account cornered the market and did more than $4,000 in sales.
"We've been doing roughly $2,000 every day of June so far."
Madden and Steven resolved to double down on the business in 2025. Bull Island Breaks launches its livestream every night at 7 p.m.
The Forrests prioritize value breaks for the business. For example, they might invest about $120 for a single pack, then charge about double, between $400 and $450, or source a $1.25 pack from Dollar Tree and turn it around for $6.99.
Bull Island Breaks has seen more than 7,000 orders and $180,000 in gross sales between January and June. The business pulled in about $28,000 in January, $34,000 in February, $36,000 in March, $34,000 in April and $49,000 in May, bringing the year-to-date profit to around $70,000, Steven says. In June, the ambitious goal is to hit $65,000 in monthly revenue.

" August is when training camp starts, so we project things to go way up [then]," Steven says, "because now we have a little bit of a following. We've been doing it every night consistently. So I think $65,000 is probably more attainable come August, but I think we'll do every bit of $30,000 this month. We've been doing roughly $2,000 every day of June so far."
All of the money is for Madden, whose behind-the-scenes dedication makes Bull Island Breaks possible, Steven notes. At first, it seemed like the business would earn enough income to fund a future car, but if the current trajectory continues, it may even cover college and a house. Madden, who turns 13 next month, also dreams of opening his own card shop one day.

Despite the business's consistent success, there have been some challenges. Madden recalls a time when TikTok banned the Bull Island Breaks account after a simple misunderstanding.
"We're big Commanders fans, so our first mess-up was buying the Commanders [cards] in our shop and refunding ourselves," Madden says. "TikTok doesn't really like when you refund people, so it's better to just take [the product] out of stock. When we did that a couple of times, they held our money for 60 days."
" They thought we were buying them to artificially look good and leave ourselves good reviews," Steven adds. "The Commanders are the most expensive team because they have Jayden Daniels, the rookie, [and] essentially, no one wants to buy the Commanders because it's a lot of money — you're talking a $100 every single time. So we would just buy them ourselves and reimburse [because] we basically get them for free by doing the break."
Now, the father-son team just removes the cards they take from the stock to avoid the issue.
"You have to keep going [with] consistency."
Madden and Steven's expanding network helps them sustain their stock and grow the passion project. "I love meeting some great people that buy from us, ripping the cards and spending time with [my dad]," Madden says.
"A couple years ago [meeting friends online] sounded weird, but now that we've immersed ourselves in this, we'll be at the card shop looking for stuff for ourselves, and we'll be like, 'Oh, Mary would like that card, or John would love that card," Steven adds. "And we get it for them. We show it to them on the live, and they're excited, like, 'Oh, how much do you want for it?' We're like, 'Dude, we're going to send this to you. You guys have supported us so much.'"

As they look to the future of Bull Island Breaks, Madden and Steven are excited to keep growing their audience, and they know that staying consistent will remain the secret to success.
"The first time everyone sees [this business], they think it's really easy, but it takes commitment and hard work," Madden says. "You have to keep going [with] consistency: posting every day, going live every day."

How to buy the Nintendo Switch 2: Stock updates for Walmart, Target, Best Buy and more

You can finally buy the Nintendo Switch 2 in the US. The $450 console officially went up for sale on June 5, and several retailers have offered it both online and in-store in the week since. While millions of people have been able to snag the device, online inventory dried up fairly quickly at most stores last week and remains difficult to find today. There have been restocks at Target and Best Buy in recent days, but those didn't last long, and the latter required in-store pickup. You may also be able to grab a bundle at Costco if you're a member there. Otherwise, it's slim pickings as of our latest sweep. Broadly speaking, people had a bit more luck on launch week by venturing to a physical retail store. We can't guarantee you'll still be able to snag a Switch 2 the old-fashioned way, but it's worth checking if a local Target, Best Buy, Walmart or GameStop — the four official retailers Nintendo lists on its store page — still has consoles in stock. Either way, if you're still on the hunt, we've rounded up all of the latest information we could find on how to buy the Nintendo Switch 2 and where you can pick one up. Best Buy began selling the Switch 2 at its retail locations on June 5. It previously said it wouldn't sell the handheld at its online store during launch week, but it made additional consoles available on June 11 around 12PM ET. That restock lasted for the better part of an hour and required in-store pickup, but the device is now sold out again. Walmart also began online purchases at midnight ET on June 5, but the console alone and the Mario Kart World bundle are out of stock as our latest update. Both SKUs briefly returned around 11:30PM ET on June 6, but we haven't seen much in the week since. Naturally, the world's largest retailer is also selling the console at its brick-and-mortar locations, though the company has noted that quantities are limited and inventory will vary by location. Target had the Switch 2 in stores on June 5 and restocked its online inventory for at least a couple of hours starting around 3:30AM ET on June 6. It then had another restock on June 12 around 2:30PM ET, but that appears to have died out in less than an hour. It still looks to be fully sold out as we write this, but you should see if there's any stock at the stores closest to you just to be safe. GameStop has advertised in-store availability, though exactly how much stock your local store may have will vary by location. Online, the device has been unavailable for the past week, with the listings for the base console and Mario Kart bundle now pointing to a "Find a Store" page. We saw a $625 bundle that includes Mario Kart World , a microSD Express card and a few other accessories pop up a bit more frequently than the standard SKUs, but it's no longer listed (and it was kind of a raw deal anyway). You may still have some luck at certain membership-based retailers. A Mario Kart World bundle at Costco that includes a 12-month Switch Online subscription has gone in and out of stock since launch day. Sam's Club has had a bundle without the Switch Online sub as well, though it's out of stock now. We also saw the console at BJ's early on June 5, but it's no longer live there. Verizon briefly had the Switch 2 available on launch day, but that's dried up, and only those with Verizon service were able to order. Amazon hasn't had any form of Switch 2 listing on its website, nor has it listed first-party Switch 2 games like Mario Kart World . The company didn't take pre-orders for the Switch 2 either, so it's unclear if and when it will sell the device. Newegg has listed the Switch 2 on its site for several weeks, but it's given no indication as to when it'll begin sales. It previous showed a couple listings from a third-party seller, but at massively inflated prices. With all of these stores, we've seen the Mario Kart World bundle available in greater quantities online than the base console, which costs $50 less. But given that Mario Kart is the Switch 2's biggest launch game and retails for $80 on its own, that may not be the worst thing. Nintendo, meanwhile, is only offering the Switch 2 via an invite system. This requires you to have been a Switch Online member for at least 12 months and logged at least 50 hours of Switch 1 playtime as of April 2. It can't hurt to sign up if you meet the criteria, but don't expect it to bear fruit immediately — it's taken weeks for many people who registered in April to receive their invite. You can find a list of every Switch 2 retail listing we could find below. Just be aware that this is meant to be a reference, not a rundown of everywhere the device is available right this second. Where to buy Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle: Where to buy Switch 2: Nintendo is selling a number of Switch 2 accessories alongside the console, from its (pricey) Pro Controller to cases to cameras for the new GameChat feature. Most of these became available on June 5. The same goes for games like Mario Kart World and the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom . Another big Switch 2 release, Donkey Kong Bananza , won't be available until mid-July but is still up for pre-order now. As of Friday afternoon, just about all Switch 2 games are broadly available. Stock for the accessories remains a little spottier, but most devices are still available at multiple retailers. Nintendo's official Switch 2 carrying cases have bee the main exceptions, so you may need to look to third-party alternatives if you want some protection for your console right away. Costco to offer $10 monthly delivery credit for premium members

Costco Wholesale Corp. is teaming up with Maplebear Inc. to offer a $10 credit per month to spend on Instacart deliveries. Under the deal, executive members in Canada and the United States will receive the credit to use on same-day deliveries valued at $150 or more if they use Maplebear-owned Instacart to ship their Costco orders. Costco offers different delivery options depending on the items, but some products can cost $3 per unit. Instacart offers various delivery options for Costco, but all orders must total at least $35 before taxes. 'Our new monthly credit makes it easier than ever for members across North America to get Costco's warehouse items with the convenience of fast and reliable delivery through Instacart,' Daniel Danker, chief product officer at Instacart, said in a news release. Costco's executive memberships, which offer cash back and additional offers, cost $130 annually, while regular plans — dubbed gold memberships — cost $65. Costco to source more Kirkland products in Canada to avoid tariffs Costco to reduce Canadian products in U.S. stores in wake of tariffs The retailer also announced this week that U.S. stores would open an hour earlier for executive members.
