Ex-Bangladeshi PM sentenced to 6 months in prison
The verdict was delivered by the three-member tribunal on Wednesday. Bangladeshi prosecutors had requested the tribunal over a telephone conversation in which Hasina allegedly said that she had a license to kill 227 people, as 227 cases had been filed against her, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
The ICT is a Bangladeshi domestic war crimes tribunal that was set up in 2009 to investigate and prosecute collaborators involved in the genocide carried out by the nation's Pakistani rulers during the country's war of independence in 1971. Hasina, who left Bangladesh for neighboring India after her government was deposed in a 2024 coup, was tried and convicted by the ICT in absentia. Earlier this year, Dhaka sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi requesting her return to face trial, to which the Indian government has not yet formally responded.
This is the first prison sentence for Hasina since she left Bangladesh. In June, the ICT formally charged Hasina with crimes against humanity in connection with a crackdown on mass protests that took place last year and led the ouster of the government run by her party, the Awami League.
Mohammad Tajul Islam, ICT's chief prosecutor, has accused Hasina of orchestrating a 'systemic attack' on the protestors. A February report by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said 'as many as 1,400 people may have been killed between 15 July and 5 August (2024), and thousands were injured, the vast majority of whom were shot by Bangladesh's security forces.'
Hasina, who resigned on August 5, 2024, has maintained her innocence. She plans to present arguments to seek her discharge from these allegations, according to her defense lawyer, Amir Hossain. In May, Bangladesh's interim government, led by Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus, barred the Awami League from running in the next general election, saying it was in the interests of national security and sovereignty.

India and UK sign multibillion-dollar free trade agreement
India and the UK signed a multibillion-dollar free trade agreement (FTA) in London on Thursday, at a meeting of prime ministers Narendra Modi and Keir Starmer. Modi called the signing a 'milestone moment,' while Starmer described it as the 'the biggest and most economically significant' trade agreement signed by the UK since Brexit. 'I am delighted that after the hard work of several years, today our two nations have signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement,' Modi said. He added that the deal 'would boost key sectors including Indian textiles, footwear, gems and jewelry, seafood, and engineering goods.' Under the agreement, India has agreed to reduce its average tariff on UK imports from 15% to 3%. India has significant rare earth reserves
India has about 7.23 million tonnes (MT) of rare earth elements, Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh told the lower house of the Indian parliament on Wednesday. Another 1.29 MT of rare earths are situated in hard rocks in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, Singh wrote in a reply to a parliamentary question, according to the Indo Asian News Service (IANS). Rare earths are used in areas such as defense, electronics, and batteries in electric vehicles. India's Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research is exploring and augmenting rare earth minerals in coastal sands, riverine areas, and hard rock terrains, IANS added. The Geological Survey of India has identified 482.6 MT of rare earth element ore resources across 34 projects, Singh said. Although the South Asian nation possesses the world's third-largest reserves of rare earths, less than 20% has been explored so far. Earlier this month India launched a $156 million subsidy scheme to boost domestic production of rare earth magnets. The proposed scheme aims to support both private companies and public sector enterprises by providing incentives to establish domestic capacity across the entire value chain. New Delhi has stepped up its efforts to make the magnets after Beijing announced export restrictions in April. China presently dominates the global market, accounting for around 60% of the world's supply of rare earth magnets. Under China's revised rules, its exporters are required to secure licenses and submit end-use declarations that confirm that materials will not be used in the defense industry or be re-exported to the US. In light of the restrictions, the Indian Foreign Ministry is proactively working with key stakeholders to address the difficulties caused by certain countries' export restrictions on rare earth magnets, Singh added.
