NIA court rejects Navlakha's plea for shifting to Delhi
Navlakha, who is currently out on bail, had moved the court in April this year, saying it had become uneconomical and burdensome for him to live in Mumbai and sought permission to permanently reside in Delhi. Bail conditions require the activist, now in his 70s, to stay within the territorial jurisdiction of the special NIA court trying the case.
In his plea, Navlakha had pointed out that while his permanent residence, employment and social support system was in Delhi, where he used to live with his partner Sahba Hussain, the couple had been struggling to find accommodation in Mumbai for nearly four months due to the ongoing case.
The plea noted that Navlakha was unemployed and financially dependent on friends and family, which made it difficult for him to sustain a stable lifestyle in Mumbai. He also wished to live close to his ailing, 86-year-old sister in Delhi.
The activist assured to make himself available before the trial court and the investigating officer whenever required and to continue to abide by all other bail conditions imposed by the high court and Supreme Court, if his plea was allowed.
Special sessions judge Chakor S Baviskar said the 'unnecessary application deserves to be rejected' as the high court had not granted such liberty either to the trial court or to Navlakha.
'At the cost of repetition, I mention that, granting permission to the accused to travel beyond the jurisdiction of the court is a different thing and allowing him to reside permanently beyond the jurisdiction of the court is entirely different,' the court said.
Navlakha was one of 16 activists and intellectuals arrested in connection with the violence that broke out at Bhima Koregaon village near Pune on January 1, 2018. Navlakha and others are accused of fuelling the violence through their speeches at the Elgar Parishad, a conclave organised by around 260 civil society organisations in Pune's Shaniwar Wada on December 31, 2017. The conclave was organised to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Bhima Koregaon, in which a small Mahar regiment of the British army defeated a large Maratha contingent.

SP City Vyom Bindal said that Main Singh, a resident of Kallarpur Gurjar village, submitted the complaint accusing SP leader Farhad Alam Gada of conducting lessons using 'politicised alphabets' at a so-called 'PDA Pathshala'. The matter surfaced after a video – allegedly filmed at Gada's residence in Ramnagar – emerged on social media and quickly went viral. The children seen in the video were reportedly pupils from a private school and appeared to be dressed in their school uniforms. Police also booked another SP leader and around a dozen others in Bhadohi for allegedly involving schoolchildren in a protest against the Uttar Pradesh government's plan to merge schools with low enrolment, according to officials. The FIR includes charges of misusing government premises, spreading misinformation, and politicising children. Officials said the "PDA Pathshala" in Bilhaur breached multiple rules, including those under the IT Act and the Right to Education (RTE) Act. Gautam had reportedly conducted similar sessions in other villages too. As per the complaint by the Block Education Officer (BEO), Gautam held the "pathshala" without authorisation from local authorities and went ahead despite objections from the school staff. Children were allegedly taught political slogans and references tied to the SP's PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) campaign near the school premises. BEO Ravi Kumar Singh confirmed that photos and videos were submitted to the district administration. In the visuals, students can be seen reciting SP-related phrases, while some clips also show allegedly incorrect educational content being taught. Singh added that Gautam herself circulated these on social media.

Acquitted in Malegaon case, Lt Col Purohit receives a hero's welcome
Jubilant scenes unfolded at Shantisheela Housing Society on Law College Road on Saturday as Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit returned home for the first time after being acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, on July 31, acquitted all seven remaining accused, including Purohit, of all charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Arms Act, and other relevant laws, bringing to an end a legal battle that spanned nearly 17 years. (HT) Purohit, a serving Indian Army officer, was accorded a celebratory welcome with chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and a shower of flower petals. He was visibly moved by the warm reception. 'I am in a different state of mind. Today, I'm being welcomed by my own people. It's a family affair. This society is like family to me. They've seen me since childhood. 'As a soldier, what I can say with conviction is that not even an enemy can question my patriotism and loyalty towards the nation. During my submission (in court), I insisted that I be called anything but not aatankwadi (terrorist) or deshdrohi (traitor),' he said. Accompanied by his wife Aparna, the officer first offered prayers at a Hanuman temple located within the housing society. Residents, many of whom have known Purohit for decades, gathered in large numbers to greet him. Drummers dressed in white and saffron played festive rhythms, firecrackers were set off, and Purohit greeted supporters from an open-roof vehicle. Aparna Purohit, overwhelmed by the emotional welcome, recalled the challenges of the past years. 'This journey has been extremely difficult, but the truth has finally triumphed. Many in this colony have seen him since birth. I'm relieved this is over. We just want to live a normal life now. Truth is the ultimate source of power. I always believed he had done nothing wrong. We were determined to fight injustice to the end,' she said. A college friend of Purohit, part of the welcoming committee, said, 'He has finally received justice after 17 years. He returns home not as an accused, but as an innocent man. That is why we felt this welcome was necessary.' The 2008 Malegaon blast occurred on September 29, when a bomb strapped to a motorcycle exploded near a mosque at Bhikkhu Chowk in Malegaon, Nashik district, killing six people and injuring 95 others. The case, initially investigated by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and later handed over to the NIA, had a total of 11 accused. Purohit, who was arrested in November 2008, spent nearly nine years in jail before being granted bail by the Supreme Court in 2017. Over the years, the case became politically and socially charged due to the alleged involvement of individuals linked to right-wing groups, leading to a contentious national debate. The NIA court's verdict came after examining 323 prosecution witnesses and eight defence witnesses. In its ruling, the court noted that there was insufficient evidence to prove the charges under UAPA and other sections against the remaining accused. Purohit's legal team has maintained that he was falsely implicated despite being an Army intelligence officer working to infiltrate and monitor extremist groups. His acquittal has been met with celebration in some quarters, while others have questioned the outcome, calling for a review of the investigation and judicial process.

BDS student's suicide: Delayed Sharda University report hampers police probe
Greater Noida A five-member internal complaints committee's report from Sharda University in the suicide case of a 21-year-old second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student, that was to be submitted within five days, has been delayed by over 15 days, said police on Sunday, adding that the delay is also hampering the ongoing police investigation. We were informed that the committee submitted its report to the vice chancellor of the university. But it has not yet been handed over to the police. The university is delaying the report, citing its incompleteness, said a senior police officer. (Sunil Ghosh/HT Photos) On July 18, the second-year BDS student from Gurugram was found dead inside room 1209(C) on the 12th floor of Mandela hostel around 8.45 pm after a student in room 1209(B) received a call from the deceased's parents to check on her. The college authorities, without informing the police or parents for over 90 minutes, rushed the girl to Sharda Hospital, where doctors declared her dead and alerted Knowledge Park police via 112. 'We were informed that the committee submitted its report to the vice chancellor of the university. But it has not yet been handed over to the police. The university is delaying the report, citing its incompleteness,' said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity. 'We have recorded statements from more than 15 people so far but have yet to proceed further due to the absence of the report,' the officer said. 'In our investigation, it is confirmed that the university did not inform the police or parents for more than an hour after the incident. Later, they alleged that she was not performing well in her studies and had low attendance. If this was the case, they would not have issued an admit card to the student for annual exams,' said the officer, adding that they are examining the laptop, mobile, and other electronic gadgets to collect evidence. The statements of the deceased's parents were also recorded by the committee and the police. 'On August 1, we recorded our statements before Knowledge Park police and submitted all the evidence to the Supreme Court committee. We are also waiting for the report, but we were informed that the committee is unable to finalise it due to errors flagged by their legal team. They (university) are powerful and not ready to listen anything,' said the deceased's father. Greater Noida, additional deputy commissioner of police, Sudhir Kumar confirmed that the investigation is getting delayed due to a delay in the committee report. 'We are also waiting for the report,' he said. The arrested assistant professor Shairy Vashist and associate professor Mahinder Singh Chouhan remain behind bars, said the police, adding that a case under sections 108 (abetment to suicide), 238 (destruction of evidence), 79 (insulting modesty of a woman), 352 (insult), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) was registered against five faculty members of the college, including the dean of the Dental department, at Knowledge Park police station. Dr Ajit Kumar, the director of public relations at Sharda University, did not revert to calls or messages by HT for a response.
