Montreal weather: There's a storm on the horizon

A thunderstorm Thursday afternoon could finish cooling things off after a sweltering Wednesday.
The expected high for the day is 24, with a humidex of 30 and UV index of 6, or high. Showers will blanket Montreal in the afternoon, bringing with them the risk of a thunderstorm. At night, a low of 16 C.
When the skies begin to clear Friday morning, step outside 'in the dark hour before dawn' for a chance to see the Arietids meteor shower, EarthSky advises. This is believed to be the most active daytime meteor shower and happens around June 7.
'The shower's radiant point – the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to radiate – is in the constellation Aries,' EarthSky says. 'You'll find this constellation in the east before sunrise.'

Montreal weather: A bespoke day for cycling

Mercury, named for a speedy trickster god of the Romans, is in inferior conjunction — meaning it's passing between us and the sun and will be visible for a short time. It will appear farthest from the sun Aug. 19, according to EarthSky, which says viewers should look toward the sunrise as the sky lightens. Meanwhile back on Earth, expect a daytime high of 24 C with a humidex of 26 and a UV index of 8, or very high. It's the perfect day for a bike ride, and if you're not sure where to go, check out our series on bike rides around Montreal with Gazette photographer Dave Sidaway and follow us on Strava for detailed routes. The weekend is shaping up to be equally delightful, with a mainly sunny high of 24 C on Saturday and 26 C on Sunday. There's no rain in the foreseeable future.

Montreal weather: This outlook is par for the course

Montrealers had a taste of summer, and now we're back to spring as May inches toward June. Expect increasing cloudiness early this morning and a good chance of showers in the afternoon. The temperature will hit a high of 19 C with a UV index 5, or moderate. The overnight low will be 14 C. According to EarthSky, the photogenic phenomenon Manhattanhenge could happen in New York Thursday. This happens when the sun aligns with the city's cross-streets 'to illuminate the 'canyons' created by the tall city buildings. If you leave now, you'll still miss it, so instead stay home, wait till nightfall and hope the clouds clear enough to spot the stars Pollox and Castor hanging out above the sliver of moon.
