Beat the Blue: F1 hopeful Imogen Radburn to race police at Sydney event
Racing head-to-head with police in front of thousands of people could give a young driver the edge on the road to Formula 1.
Imogen Radburn, a racing driver looking to make her mark on the global stage, will join 99 car enthusiasts set to race police at Beat the Blue in Sydney on Saturday.

It's part of the 19-year-old's preparation ahead of a driver selection shootout in Europe for the F1 Academy, an international racing series aiming to find women to drive in Formula 1.
The pressure of performing in front of a packed crowd at Sydney Motorsport Park could help give her the edge over rival racers in Spain next month.
'If you ask me four years ago, 'would I be racing an electric car against the police?' I've never thought that would be a thing,' Radburn says.
'It will be really cool.
'Last year they had over 35,000 people show up … I know I've never raced in front of that many people. I think it will really give me an opportunity to see what it looks like to perform in front of a bigger crowd that I'm used to.'

Beat the Blue pits car enthusiasts into short races with police on a wet skid pan at Sydney Motorsport Park designed to simulate slippery and dangerous conditions on the road.
Free to spectators, the event draws a significant crowd each year.
After racing police, car lovers then race each other to determine who is the fastest community driver on the night.

One of those drivers, Reece McIntosh, went on to represent Australia at the 2024 FIA Motorsport Games overseas.
Radburn says Beat the Blue, an event organised by NSW Highway Patrol officer Sergeant Steven Planinic and hosted by James Stewart of motoring events company Driving Solutions, is a great way for young drivers to gain exposure.
'What James and Steve has organised with Beat the Blue is a perfect opportunity for us ones that are moving forward in our own careers to really be put in the spotlight and do things that we wouldn't normally do,' she says.

Radburn will be driving an electric Ford Mustang Mach-E GT in the event.
Fellow racer Summer Rintoule will suit up in Ford's Mustang Cup race car, while TV presenter Hamish Blake will take on the cops in a V8-powered Mustang road car.
The free event starts at 7pm on Saturday August 9 at Sydney Motorsport Park in Eastern Creek.
It includes a drone display, car show, motorcycle skills showcase and kids' activities including electric go karts.
While Beat the Blue is a fun night out for Sydney families, racers like Radburn take the opportunity seriously.

The high-stakes knockout competition is not a world away from the F1 Academy shootout that could deliver her dream drive on the Formula 1 calendar with Rodin Motorsport next year.
'I think every girl in the world has seen this massive opportunity and was like 'I need to do this', and it's awesome that they are, but it's getting harder and harder to get in,' she says.

'They've never had this sort of shootout process before so I'm not really sure how it will go, but I just know that I'm 110 per cent ready.
'I've gotta put my best performance forward.'

Meg Lanning gets the better of Ellyse Perry in Hundred's battle of Australian greats
It is a rare experience for Australian bowlers to be clouted to all parts in the women's game but, if anyone can do it, it is former captain Meg Lanning. The veteran played the leading role as Oval Invincibles smashed the best powerplay score in the five-year history of the Hundred Women, cracking 54 in 25 balls, the first 50 of which came from 20 balls bowled by a trio of Aussies. That set Invincibles up for a 100-ball score of 5-174, the third-highest in Hundred history, and Birmingham Phoenix never looked like matching it. Georgia Voll gave them brief hope with a scintillating start, making 22 off 15 balls, but was caught at mid wicket with a juggling catch by compatriot Amanda Jade-Wellington. Ellyse Perry hit her first two balls for four but she had come to the crease with Phoenix 2-31 and needing a very demanding 144 off 74. The all-rounder had just reached 29 off 16 balls by launching Jade-Wellington for six, but was caught behind next ball trying to cut. Six balls later, Jade-Wellington brilliantly ran out Emma Lamb (25) and, at 4-83 with 59 balls gone, the game was done. Jade-Wellington finished with 2-27 off her 20 balls as the visitors won by 22 runs at Edgbaston, Phoenix closing on 6-152. Phoenix had opened up on Tuesday (local time) with a trio of Australians, Megan Schutt, skipper Perry and Voll, and Lanning tucked into them with English opening partner Lauren Wingfield-HIll. All three bowlers were punished at a rate of more than 10-an-over, not helped by each conceding extras. Perry used seven bowlers to try to stem the flow, but only spinner Hannah Baker had any effect, dismissing both openers as she took 2-24 in her 20, by far the best economy rate. Lanning was caught at deep midwicket by Lamb for a 19-ball 36, then Wingfield-Hill was taken by Perry at mid-off for 33 off 27. However, Alice Capsey had come in with the platform set and the big-hitting England batter, dropped on 21, thumped 52 off 29 balls. When she was out there were two balls left, Jade-Wellington was caught trying to hit the first for four, Ash Gardner then came in and hit her only ball to the boundary. Perry finished with 0-34 off 20 balls, Schutt 1-34 off her 20, and Voll's only five-ball set went for 20. AAP

Ford's new Ranger-size electric ute set to shake up Australia's ute market
Ford is set to launch a Ranger-sized electric dual-cab ute in 2027, built on a brand new platform designed to make electric vehicles (EVs) cheaper and faster to build. The American giant said this could be its biggest turning point since the original Model T. The ute will debut in the US with a starting price of approximately US$30,000 (AUD 46,000) - far below the cost of most EV utes on sale. The US-built ute will be designed for global markets; however, Ford Australia says it's too early to confirm if the model will be sold locally. Ford CEO Jim Farley said the new EV will match the acceleration of a Mustang EcoBoost capable of 0-96km in approximately 4.9 seconds, while offering passengers more space than a Toyota RAV4, plus smart storage solutions. The company also said it will deliver a long driving range, DC fast charging, and enough vehicle-to-home power to run a house for six days. The electric ute will be built at Ford's Louisville plant in Kentucky, backed by a US$2 billion (A$3bn) investment, alongside a US$3 billion (A$4.6bn) battery plant in Michigan. It will use the new EV platform and Ford's new assembly tree production method. Instead of one long production line, three parts of the vehicle are built separately, the front, rear and the battery and then brought together. The new EV platform will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs as part of the vehicle's structure, lowering the centre of gravity and increasing cabin space. It will also be used across a variety of body styles. From mid-2025, Australia's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard will push carmakers to cut emissions, especially in high-selling utes. If Ford's electric ute makes it here, it will give Australian buyers, especially tradies, a far cheaper EV option than what's currently available. Final specifications will be revealed closer to launch.
