Winter Taha'im Season 2025 Kicks Off In Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan
The second edition of the 'Winter Taha'im' season kicked off in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan and will run until February 15, 2025. The event aims to promote sustainable development by showcasing authentic Omani heritage through innovative and engaging methods suitable for all ages. It capitalizes on the region's diverse natural and geographical landscape and supports 120 entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), artisans, and productive families.
His Excellency Dr. Yahya bin Badr Al Maawali, Governor of South Al Sharqiyah, stated, 'This year's 'Winter Taha'im' season reflects the unique heritage and culture of the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate. The success of the first edition inspired us to create an even more diverse and comprehensive experience to meet the expectations of our guests. The season offers activities that blend entertainment and education, focusing on supporting SMEs and productive families to stimulate the local economy and promote Omani products.'
His Excellency Mohammed bin Ali Akakak, Wali of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, emphasized that the event serves as a prominent national platform for strengthening the cultural and heritage identity of the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan, highlighting its natural and tourism assets. He added that the organizing committee has designed this year's season to be more diverse and inclusive, catering to a wider range of interests and showcasing Omani heritage in new and exciting ways. The festival also provides a vital opportunity to bolster the local economy, with dedicated spaces for SMEs and productive families through the 'Taha'im Market,' further strengthening their role in economic and social development.
The opening ceremony featured dazzling light, laser, and fireworks displays, creating a magical atmosphere. A documentary film showcasing the successes of the first edition, including its impact on the local economy and tourism, was also screened. A promotional film, depicting a falcon's journey from Mount Qahwan, highlighted the landmarks of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan—lush oases, ancient neighborhoods, pristine beaches, and vast golden sands—symbolizing authenticity and strength, and inviting visitors to experience the unique charm of the region.
The season boasts a rich and varied program of activities for all ages. The 'Sand Theatre' will host artistic, cultural, and heritage performances, poetry evenings, competitions, and entertainment shows. Sports and heritage tournaments, such as camel races ('Namous'), horse displays, and 'Zveen' competitions, will also be featured, along with educational activities showcasing Omani heritage in a contemporary context. In addition to the 'Taha'im Market,' restaurants and cafes will be available to enhance the visitor experience.
The first edition of the 'Winter Taha'im' season in 2024 attracted 300,000 visitors.

Bahrain Space Agency Launches AI Powered Satellite Payload
The Bahrain Space Agency (BSA) announced the launch of its first specialised payload for cloud detection and identification of satellite imagery. The project utilises advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and has been developed in collaboration with the Chinese company Star Vision and the Omani company 'Oman Lens,' aboard a joint satellite between the Sultanate of Oman and the People's Republic of China. The project involves a group of BSA engineers in the design, development, and testing of advanced AI algorithms, which are being implemented on board a satellite operating in low Earth orbit. The project aims to build national capacity in the field of AI algorithm development, enhancing local competencies, stimulating continuous innovation, and consolidating the Kingdom's position as a regional hub for space innovation. These algorithms are dedicated to analysing satellite images in real time, detecting and identifying clouds, estimating their coverage in images, and then automatically replacing them with parts of previous images before transmitting the data to ground stations. This process improves the efficiency of space systems and enhances the quality of the extracted data, which is subsequently used in a variety of applications, such as urban planning, air and water quality monitoring, ship identification and location, and other space-based applications that provide valuable data to a wide range of public and private sector entities. Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Aseeri, CEO of the BSA, highlighted that the initiative stands as a major achievement for the organisation, reinforcing Bahrain's status as a frontrunner in the space sector following the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The project also underscores the BSA's international partnerships and the technical and scientific expertise of its staff, which have been instrumental in making this distinguished collaboration possible. Space Engineer Yaqoob Al Qassab noted that the project is among several initiatives designed to strengthen Bahrain's national expertise in developing and integrating AI algorithms with satellite systems. The technical team involved serves as the core of a dedicated Bahraini group focused on applying AI technology in space to support sustainable development goals. He also mentioned that the team is now engaged in a new collaborative project with the same partners, targeting the deployment of advanced algorithms for automated maritime vessel detection from space. This project marks the first Bahraini–Omani cooperation in the space sector, and represents the third Arab–Chinese space cooperation, following the Bahraini–Egyptian–Chinese collaboration on lunar projects. Etihad Airways Flight Diverted Due to Medical Emergency
An Etihad Airways flight from New Delhi, India to Abu Dhabi was diverted to Muscat due to a medical emergency, the airline said on Sunday, June 1. The UAE's flagship carrier said that a passenger on board required immediate medical attention and the flight EY213 from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Zayed International Airport was diverted to the Omani capital.
