Blackstone drops out TikTok US deal consortium: Why the firm backed out? Key reasons explained

Time of Indiaa day ago
Blackstone has pulled out of a consortium aiming to invest in TikTok's US operations, adding to growing uncertainty around the deal, sources told Reuters on Friday.
The investment group, led by Susquehanna International Group and General Atlantic, both existing investors in TikTok's parent company ByteDance, had been seen as the front-runner to acquire majority control of TikTok's US business.
The private equity firm's exit comes amid growing uncertainty and multiple delays in the TikTok transaction, which has become central to the US-China trade talks.
The deal, originally encouraged under President Donald Trump's administration, aimed to give US investors an 80% stake in TikTok, while ByteDance would keep a minority share.
However, repeated deadline extensions for ByteDance to divest its US operations have fueled uncertainty among potential investors and clouded the future of TikTok's presence in the country.
Earlier last month, Trump signed a third executive order extending the deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok, pushing the cutoff to September 17.
Earlier, in April 2024, Congress passed a law requiring TikTok to be sold or shut down by January 19, 2025.
Some legislators have criticised these extensions, suggesting the Trump administration is disregarding legal requirements and national security issues regarding Chinese control of TikTok.

ByteDance is considering various solutions, including selling or reorganising its US operations. The company, which generated $43 billion in revenue during the first quarter, has now exceeded Meta's quarterly earnings, Reuters reported quoting sources.
The US consortium backed by the administration in the TikTok deal includes private equity firm KKR and new investors like Andreessen Horowitz, with Oracle also expected to take a stake.
However, it remains unclear whether all original consortium members are still part of the bid.
Earlier this year, the group was working on a plan to spin off TikTok's US operations into a separate American company. But negotiations stalled after China signaled it would block the deal, shortly after Trump announced new tariffs on Chinese imports.
If a deal goes through, TikTok's US operations are expected to be run by a new joint venture between an American investor group and ByteDance, which would retain a minority stake.
Blackstone's decision to withdraw underscores the growing uncertainty and complications surrounding the deal. The future of TikTok has become entangled in broader US-China trade tensions, with Trump indicating he would discuss the issue directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
TikTok is already developing a separate version of the app for the US market.

iGowise ties up with Elektrik Express to deploy 2,000 AI-enabled e-trikes for urban deliveries

Elektrik Express has partnered with iGowise Mobility to deploy 2,000 AI-integrated BeiGo 2.5-wheeler electric pickup trikes . The rollout will begin with a pilot phase starting on 15 August 2025 in Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The deployment will continue in phases over the next 24 months, with plans to expand into Tier 1 and Tier 2 Indian cities and later into Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. At the core of the initiative is MicroLogi, Elektrik Express's logistics intelligence platform . The system uses real-time IoT data, predictive analytics, and workflow optimisation to improve delivery network performance. During the pilot phase, selected fleets will be tested in partnership with quick-commerce operators. The collected operational data and rider feedback will be used to refine route planning, energy consumption, and fleet behaviour before full-scale deployment. Elektrik Express aims to address mid-range logistics categories involving loads between 50 and 150 kg and volumes between 100L and 500L, which it considers underserved by conventional two-wheelers and larger cargo vehicles. Smart fleet integration and operational efficiency The BeiGo 2.5-wheeler pickup trike developed by iGowise features a 100+ km range, swappable LFP batteries, and fast charging in 2.5 hours. The vehicle includes integrated smart telematics that communicate directly with MicroLogi to optimise routing, monitor fleet health, manage rider workloads, and oversee energy use. Chintamani Sardesai, Co-founder, Elektrik Express, said, 'EVs are no longer a novelty—they are a necessity. But electrification without intelligence is just a half-step. With this partnership, we're creating a delivery infrastructure that is not only zero-emission but also self-optimising.' Sravan Kumar Appana, CEO, iGowise Mobility, added, 'The BeiGo 2.5EV Pickup Trike is more than a vehicle. Our engineering has always been driven by real-world logistics pain points. Integrated with MicroLogi, our trikes become intelligent agents in a living, learning fleet capable of scaling smarter, safer, and more profitable delivery networks.' Commercial rollout model The full deployment of the 2,000 units will follow a two-phase model. The first is a pilot phase in collaboration with quick-commerce operators to assess AI performance through operational data. The second phase will be commercial deployment through a Partners Lease Program, which enables fleet operators, startups, and enterprises to adopt the vehicles without significant upfront investment. The initiative's core features include AI-assisted route learning, predictive maintenance, centralised fleet monitoring, and integration with existing delivery platforms through quick-commerce APIs. The aim is to create a scalable and responsive delivery network designed for the urban logistics needs of India and similar global markets.

Nvidia CEO's China charm offensive underscores rock star status in key market

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is no stranger to Beijing, but his most recent visit, his third to China this year, cemented his rock star status in the country, where fans mingled freely with the AI titan on the streets of the capital. It was a rare sight for a chief executive of one of the world's most powerful companies to roam around Beijing, engage in wide-ranging interviews, take selfies with excited fans and even sign leather jackets, a signature clothing item of the billionaire, for his devoted followers. The tycoon at the helm of the world's most valuable company arrived in Beijing for a supply chain expo last week just days after meeting U.S. President Donald Trump and announced the AI giant would once again be able to sell its H20 chips in China following a U.S. ban in April on national security concerns. Huang's company is caught in the cross-hairs of a U.S.-China trade war that threatens to upend supply chains as both countries battle for global dominance in AI and other cutting-edge technologies, threatening Nvidia's $17 billion China business. While Huang appears to be navigating a delicate tightrope between Beijing and Washington well, the company remains subject to the ups and downs of Sino-U.S. tensions, analysts said. "Jensen Huang's visit aimed to demonstrate Nvidia's commitment to the Chinese market," said Lian Jye Su, a chief analyst at tech research firm Omdia. "However, this commitment must be balanced against potential U.S. government concerns about deepening ties with China." Huang described AI models from Chinese firms Deepseek, Alibaba and Tencent as "world class" and his official engagements included a "wonderful" meeting with Chinese trade tsar and Vice Premier He Lifeng and a face-to-face with Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. Demand for H20 chips surged in China following the launch of DeepSeek models in January. "Nvidia will still need to see the tide clearly and ride it at the right time to maximize the available benefits. But good for the company, I think it has a CEO who's very good at doing that," said Tilly Zhang, a technology analyst with Gavekal Dragonomics. Charlie Chai, an analyst with 86Research, said Nvidia's China market share was likely to slide in years to come. "The Chinese government will actively help or subsidize domestic rivals that can one day stand up to and, at least in some use cases, replace high-end Nvidia chips." In an unusual sight for a global CEO visiting China, videos posted on social media platforms showed Huang wandering the streets of Beijing, drink in hand, signing notebooks and posing for selfies. In response to questions about how Washington would likely receive his latest visit to Beijing, the CEO said: "I told President Trump and his cabinet that I was coming to China. Told him about my trip here, and he said, 'Have a great trip'." At the opening of the China International Supply Chain Expo last Wednesday, Huang, who was born in Taiwan but moved to the U.S. at the age of nine, traded his signature leather jacket for a black, traditional Chinese-style jacket and referred to himself in a speech as "Chinese". In his Expo speech, as well as in later comments, Huang was effusive in his praise for Chinese tech giants' capabilities in bringing technology into applications, describing China's supply chain as "vast". Even arch rival Huawei Technologies, a firm that Nvidia is locked in a strategic and intensifying battle for AI chip dominance with, was lauded. "I think the fact of the matter is, anyone who discounts Huawei and anyone who discounts China's manufacturing capability is deeply naive. This is a formidable company," Huang told reporters.

Sona Comstar to form $20 mn JV with China's JNT for driveline systems

Automotive components supplier Sona BLW Precision Forgings ( Sona Comstar ) has signed a binding term sheet with Jinnaite Machinery (JNT) to set up a joint venture (JV) in China to manufacture driveline systems and components for electric and conventional vehicles. Sona Comstar will invest $12 million in the first phase of the venture and hold a 60 per cent equity stake, while JNT will contribute $8 million in assets and business operations. The JV is expected to commence operations in the second half of FY2026. The move marks a strategic step in Sona Comstar's expansion into the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market, which accounted for around two-thirds of global EV sales in 2024, the companies said in a joint statement Monday, citing third party research. Chinese OEMs held 76 per cent of global EV sales last year and have increased exports from 1 million units in 2020 to over 6 million in 2024. JNT, based in Gucheng County, operates a large-scale foundry and holds 63 patents. It serves customers in the automotive, railway and off-highway sectors in China and internationally. The joint venture aims to leverage Sona Comstar's expertise in driveline systems and JNT's manufacturing capabilities and customer network in China. The JV will supply driveline components to both EV and non-EV customers, and already has an order book. The closing of the transaction is subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions.
