Ganta faults Simhachalam temple officials for shed collapse ahead of ‘Giri Pradakshina'

The Hindu07-07-2025
Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao on Monday (July 7) opined that officials of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Simhachalam should own responsibility for the collapse of a shed under construction at Simhachalam on Saturday.
The MLA was visiting the site on Monday. Expressing disappointment at the temple officials for failing to supervise the work and trying to blame the contractor for the collapse, he said the annual festivals of 'Chandanotsavam' and 'Giri Pradakshina' draw thousands of devotees to the temple every year. A wall under construction on the Simhachalam Hill collapsed during the Chandanotsavam in April this year, causing the death of seven devotees.
The engineering officials, who were supposed to supervise the work of the contractor, had shirked their responsibility and squarely put the blame on the contractor for the wall collapse. Now, the collapse of the shed, being constructed at the foothill for devotees to rest after the 32-km trek during the 'Giri Pradakshina', scheduled for July 9, was an indication of the negligence of the officials.
Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the damage would have been unprecedented had the accident occurred on the day of Giri Pradakshina, as an estimated five lakh devotees were expected to participate in the festival. He said the feasibility of constructing a 'permanent shed' at the 'Tholi Pavancha' (first step lead to the hill) would be studied to avoid construction of temporary shed every year.
Corporator PV Narasimham was present.
Door-to-door survey
The MLA conducted a door-to-door survey at Kapudibba at 98th Ward of GVMC and interacted with the householders as part of 'Suparipalanalo Mundadugu' programme of the government. He asked them whether they were receiving the welfare schemes of the government and assured them that TDR bonds would soon be issued to those whose lands were acquired for the BRTS roads in the past. He said he had already apprised Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Minister for Municipal Administration P. Narayana in this regard.
The TDR bonds would be issued once the five-member committee, appointed by the government, gives its report on the issue. He added that a total of 12,149 constructions were regularised in the first phase as part of providing a solution to the 'pancha gramalu' problem. A solution would be worked out for the vacant land, farm land and other land under 'pancha gramalu' (Simhachalam devasthanam lands).

Activists, politicians question Parvati Janata Vasahat TDR approval

Pune: Civic activists and political leaders have raised serious objections over the approval of 100% transfer of development rights (TDR) for the Parvati Janata Vasahat land, alleging irregularities in the process and demanding an inquiry. Activists, politicians question Parvati Janata Vasahat TDR approval Civic activist Vijay Kumbhar has appealed to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to investigate the case. 'The total land of Janata Vasahat is 48 acres, currently occupied by slums. The original owner sold it to a private builder in 2014 for ₹16 crore. In January 2025, it was resold to another builder for ₹85 crore. Strangely, in July 2025, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) approved TDR for this land with a market value of ₹1,750 crore,' he said. Kumbhar pointed out that under the existing rules, hilltop and hill slope land is eligible for only 0.25% TDR, but in this case 100% compensation was granted. BJP leader Ujwal Keskar said, 'If the state government has allotted 100% TDR for Janata Vasahat land, the same rule should apply across the city, including for Biodiversity Park landowners. They would gladly hand over their land to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) under such terms.' One of the builders, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged that the process was unusually swift. 'Within just six months, the proposal was submitted to SRA, public notice was issued, the proposal was sent to the state government, and approval for 100% TDR was granted. Many legal and administrative steps were bypassed,' the builder claimed. While administrative officials have remained silent, some officers confirmed that the TDR will be issued by the civic body. However, they pointed out that PMC's opinion was not sought before the proposal was approved.

Citizens' groups hope CMP will bridge last-mile connectivity from Metro stations

1 2 Pune: Citizens' groups have expressed hope that the draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) tabled on Friday would address gaps in last-mile connectivity from Metro stations in the city. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said during the presentation of CMP that the 30-year plan was aimed at resolving the city's traffic congestion. A 300km Metro line network was also announced for Pune region. Activist Vivek Velankar said efficient, affordable, and reliable public transport was the key to solving Pune's traffic problem. "There is a growing need for micro-level integration between local trains, Metro, PMPML buses, and rickshaw services to ensure last-mile connectivity. Only then will commuters shift to public transport," he said. Activist Prashant Raul said CMP was "very much needed" for a growing city like Pune. "If implemented well, it will mean no traffic congestion, no wastage of time, and reduced air and noise pollution. It will also ease the mental fatigue of battling traffic daily," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I Lost My Passport in Rome. "We have reserved BRT lanes but there are too few buses, no feeder lines to BRT or Metro stations, and no parking for two-or four-wheelers at these points. Public transport fares went up by 60% in recent months," he said. He also flagged poor route planning, citing the overlapping of PCMC–Pune Metro corridor with an existing BRT route. Other concerns include uncomfortable and poorly maintained PMPML buses, lack of peak-hour services for women and students, and slow BRT speeds of under 20 km/hr due to faulty design. Encroached footpaths, broken cycle tracks, and the absence of awareness campaigns worsen the situation, he added. Raul suggested increasing the bus fleet, introducing double-decker and subscription-based executive coaches, and offering special services for women and students. Another citizen activist called for priority bus lanes instead of restricted BRT routes, flexible lane concepts in congested areas, and private participation in feeder services. The activists have also proposed a monthly "public transport day" with free rides, car- and bike-pooling platforms, corporate incentives for employees, cycle-adaptive buses, and continuous green-covered footpaths and cycle tracks. The CMP proposes PMPML feeder buses and improved pedestrian walkways to strengthen Metro connectivity. Maha Metro MD Shravan Hardikar said the goal was to raise public transport's share to 30% in the first phase and 50% eventually. Plans include expanding PMPML's fleet to 4,000 buses, adding 80.5 km of new BRTS and high-frequency bus corridors, and ensuring public transport access within 500 metres for all residents. The project would be rolled out in three phases over 30 years at a total cost of ₹1.3 lakh crore, with ₹62,000 crore earmarked for the first phase.
