Citizens' groups hope CMP will bridge last-mile connectivity from Metro stations
2
Pune: Citizens' groups have expressed hope that the draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) tabled on Friday would address gaps in last-mile connectivity from Metro stations in the city.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said during the presentation of CMP that the 30-year plan was aimed at resolving the city's traffic congestion. A 300km Metro line network was also announced for Pune region.
Activist Vivek Velankar said efficient, affordable, and reliable public transport was the key to solving Pune's traffic problem. "There is a growing need for micro-level integration between local trains, Metro, PMPML buses, and rickshaw services to ensure last-mile connectivity.
Only then will commuters shift to public transport," he said.

Metro regulars have echoed the view, pointing out that with network expansion on cards, seamless connectivity with stations is essential.
Activist Prashant Raul said CMP was "very much needed" for a growing city like Pune. "If implemented well, it will mean no traffic congestion, no wastage of time, and reduced air and noise pollution. It will also ease the mental fatigue of battling traffic daily," he said.

However, Raul warned of persistent challenges. "We have reserved BRT lanes but there are too few buses, no feeder lines to BRT or Metro stations, and no parking for two-or four-wheelers at these points. Public transport fares went up by 60% in recent months," he said. He also flagged poor route planning, citing the overlapping of PCMC–Pune Metro corridor with an existing BRT route.
Other concerns include uncomfortable and poorly maintained PMPML buses, lack of peak-hour services for women and students, and slow BRT speeds of under 20 km/hr due to faulty design.
Encroached footpaths, broken cycle tracks, and the absence of awareness campaigns worsen the situation, he added.
Raul suggested increasing the bus fleet, introducing double-decker and subscription-based executive coaches, and offering special services for women and students.
Another citizen activist called for priority bus lanes instead of restricted BRT routes, flexible lane concepts in congested areas, and private participation in feeder services.
The activists have also proposed a monthly "public transport day" with free rides, car- and bike-pooling platforms, corporate incentives for employees, cycle-adaptive buses, and continuous green-covered footpaths and cycle tracks.
The CMP proposes PMPML feeder buses and improved pedestrian walkways to strengthen Metro connectivity.
Maha Metro MD Shravan Hardikar said the goal was to raise public transport's share to 30% in the first phase and 50% eventually. Plans include expanding PMPML's fleet to 4,000 buses, adding 80.5 km of new BRTS and high-frequency bus corridors, and ensuring public transport access within 500 metres for all residents.
The project would be rolled out in three phases over 30 years at a total cost of ₹1.3 lakh crore, with ₹62,000 crore earmarked for the first phase.

EPS says 4,000 Amma clinics will be opened after AIADMK comes to power
KRISHNAGIRI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palansiwami on Monday said 4000 mini clinics named after late chief minister J Jayalalithaa would be opened after AIADMK comes to power. Speaking at Denkanikottai in Krishnagiri district in his third leg of the statewide tour, EPS alleged that Nalam Kaakkum Stalin programme implemented by the DMK govt only envisages to conduct weekly medical camps whereas the AIADMK govt had aimed for permanent health care by opening Amma Mini Clinics. 'We opened 2,000 Amma mini clinics. But Stalin closed them. Once we come to power, we will open 4,000 Amma mini clinics,'' EPS announced. 'Fifteen lakh people benefited out of our medical camps held across the state during our 10-year regime,'' he said adding that Stalin was duping the people of Tamil Nadu by claiming credit for AIADMK schemes by renaming them. EPS said AIADMK govt had implemented multiple schemes benefitting farmers but Stalin had betrayed farmers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you should Ditch over 40 Learn More Undo 'We gave 24 hours three phase electricity to farmers. AIADMK waived farmers' loans twice,'' he said. 'Once AIADMK comes to power round the clock power supply for farmers will resume,'' he said. EPS said that the AIADMK-BJP alliance was robust and that they would win 210 seats in the 2026 elections. 'The DMK depends on its alliance partners, while the AIADMK-BJP alliance relies on the people,' he said. EPS said that the AIADMK has maintained a harmonious relationship with the central government while governing the state effectively, which led to prosperity of Tamil Nadu. During his speech at Veppanapalli, EPS said the DMK govt had failed to protect the interests of farmers. He alleged that the DMK government had not opened the flower auction centre in Hosur, which was constructed at a cost of Rs.20 crore during the AIADMK's tenure. He said the centre would be operational once the AIADMK regains power. EPS said the DMK govt ignored the mango farmers' request for a base price for their crops and guaranteed that their requests would be met. School students in EPS rally Some school children standing alongside party cadres during the EPS rally in Rayakottai in Krishnagiri district on Monday raised several eyebrows. The students in school uniforms were draped in saffron shawls. "A few BJP functionaries draped their party shawls over them and asked them to join the crowd," said K Srinivasan, who was at the rally. Venture capitalist Mike Moritz defends Intel CEO Lip Bu Tan after US President Donald Trump demands his resignation: There is no one better equipped to…
Image credit: LinkedIn/Canva Venture capitalist and former chairman of Sequoia Capital , Mike Moritz , has publicly defended Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan after US President Donald Trump demanded his resignation last week. Moritz urged Intel to stand by its CEO, stating there is 'no one better equipped to transform Intel's fortunes." Moritz, who has known Tan for nearly four decades from his time at Sequoia Capital, described Trump's actions as a 'vindictive political sideshow' with 'no modern precedent.' He also highlighted Tan's previous experience in turning around Cadence Design Systems as a key reason for his confidence in Tan's ability to lead the US-based chipmaker. Tan may even visit the White House to address concerns about his background and discuss how Intel can collaborate with the US government. What Mike Moritz said while defending Intel's CEO Lip Bu Tan In a piece recently published in the Financial Times, Moritz wrote: 'Now the Intel board must decide whether to march to the beat of so many other corporate leaders and capitulate to the president's artless bullying or to set an example for other companies and display some backbone. Early signs of defiance are encouraging.' Moritz, who joined Sequoia Capital in 1986 and stepped down in 2023, made notable early investments in companies such as Google and PayPal during his tenure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If Your Ears Ring, Stop Sleeping Like This Immediately Derila Ergo Undo This comes after Trump took to the social media platform Truth Social to share a post calling for Tan's resignation, describing the 65-year-old as 'highly CONFLICTED.' Soon after, Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark) also voiced concerns about Tan's connections to Chinese companies and the possible national security implications. In response, Tan addressed what he referred to as 'misinformation' in a letter to employees, stating that he has 'always operated within the highest legal and ethical standards.' Four former Intel board members - Charlene Barshefsky, Reed Hundt, James Plummer, and David Yoffie - have also supported Trump's criticism of Tan. They've also asked for a more radical shake-up and have even urged Intel to spin off its manufacturing arm to boost US chipmaking dominance and competitiveness.
