Police Academy participates in Basel Tattoo Military Festival in Switzerland
The Police Academy is participating for the first time in the Basel Tattoo Military Festival, which will kick off on July 11 in the Swiss city of Basel. This festival is considered one of the most prominent international festivals specializing in military and musical performances.
The festival will be held under the patronage of the Swiss Federal Department of Defence and under the supervision of the Competence Center of Swiss Military Music. Approximately 1.3 million viewers from across Europe watch it live each year.
The Ministry of Interior said that the academy is preparing for a distinguished participation in this festival with a team of 44 students from the Police College. The band have undergone two months of intensive training to deliver a performance that reflects an honorable image of Qatar and enhances its cultural and media presence on the international stage.
In this context, head of the military parade committee Captain Abdullah Ahmed Al Subaie emphasized that preparations focused on mastering motor and performative skills, as well as utilizing music and silent movements in a contemporary style that matched the event's scale. He noted that it featured precise synchronization between the silent infantry performance and the musical pieces performed by the Police Music Band, comprised of 67 musicians, providing a comprehensive audio-visual experience.
Al Subaie explained that the participation comes within the framework of the Academy's commitment to representing the country in international events and highlighting the level of professionalism and discipline that distinguishes its members, a result of continuous training and specialized qualification. He noted that the team has previously participated in graduation ceremonies of batches of Police College students, in addition to its contributions to various national and community events.

Diaz makes debut as Bayern beat Lyon 2-1
dpa Munich Luis Diaz came on for his Bayern Munich debut and was involved in the opening goal in the Bundesliga champions' 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyon in a pre-season match on Saturday. Diaz, who arrived on Wednesday for around ?75 million ($85.4 million), was pulled down by Lyon's Clinton in the 53rd minute and Michael Olise converted the ensuing penalty. Olise completed a brace nine minutes later off Serge Gnabry before Lyon got a late consolation goal from Alejandro Rodriguez. Girelli brace sinks Norway as Italy reach women's Euros semi-finals
dpa Geneva Captain Cristiana Girelli headed a 90th-minute winner to complete a brace as Italy beat Norway 2-1 to reach the semi-finals of women's Euro 2025 on Wednesday. Girelli struck in off the crossbar as the game seemed to head into extra time after Norway captain Ada Hegerberg had in the 66th minute cancelled out Girelli's first goal in the 50th. Former Ballon d'Or winner Hegerberg, who has come under criticism for playing a poor tournament, missed a penalty for the second time at the event on the hour but partially made amends with the equalizer. Twice champions Norway had won all of their group matches but it was Italy, who had advanced with just one victory from the group stage, to reach the semis for the first time since 1997 - after failing to advance into the knock-outs at the last two editions. In the semis, again in Geneva, Italy face title holders England or Sweden, who meet on Thursday. The other quarter-finals are hosts Switzerland v world champions and top favourites Spain, and France v record champions Germany. Italian joy and Hegerberg disappointment 'It is unbelievable, incredibly nice. We awarded ourselves for the development over the past years,' Italy coach Andrea Soncin said. 'It is a huge honour, we are so proud to be in the semi-finals again. The girls have grown and achieved something extraordinary.' Opening goal, offside and penalty miss Italy broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart when Girelli flicked home Sofia Cantore's sharp cross from the right. The ball was in Norway's net again three minutes later after a major scramble but Caruso was ruled offside in the build-up. It wasn't 2-0, but it then wasn't 1-1 either on the hour because Hegerberg failed to find the target from the spot after she was pushed down by Linari - missing wide right this time after firing wide left against the Swiss in the tournament opener a fortnight ago. Hegerberg redeems herself but Girelli has last laugh Hegerberg made up for it when she ran behind Norway's defence to convert a long ball from Maren Mjelde and scored the equalizer from a right ankle past the hesitating Giuliani. The goal boosted Norway who came close from Ingrid Syrstad Engen's curling shot in the 86th. But Italy stole victory at the death when Cantore's floating cross from the left found Girelli at the far post to nod the winner.

Stage set for third edition of Qatar Rail Open Chess
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar Chess Association (QCA) has announced details of the 3rd edition of Qatar Rail Open Chess Championship 2025, organized in cooperation with Qatar Rail. The tournament coincides with World Chess Day, which falls on July 20 every year. The preliminary rounds will begin tomorrow, Thursday, at the Qatar Chess Training Center, with the participation of 100 players. The competition will be held in a nine-round blitz format to determine the players who will advance to the final stage. The final rounds of the tournament will be held on Sunday at the Al Bidda Station of Doha Metro. Twenty players will participate in the nine-round Swiss system. QCA said it has made all arrangements for smooth start of the competition tomorrow, putting the final touches on the selection of arbiters who will oversee the competitions. QCA President Mohammed Al Mudahka praised the continuation of the tournament for a third consecutive year, appreciating the cooperation between QCA and Qatar Rail, which aims to achieve several goals, most notably spreading the culture of chess in society. He expressed his aspiration for further cooperation that would help QCA achieve its vision of developing the game by building a strong base for it. He explained that the tournament is witnessing participation of a large number of national team players, emphasizing that the tournament aims to see new players emerge who will support the national teams in future. He also emphasized that the tournament is part of QCA's plans to bring about a qualitative shift in the game and attract talent. He added that the tournament represents a valuable opportunity to discover more promising talent for inclusion in the coming period, expanding the selection of the best players to represent Qatari chess in international tournaments. For his part, Abdullah Ali Al Mawlawi, Head of Communications and Public Relations at Qatar Rail, expressed his pleasure in partnering with the Qatar Chess Association in organizing the event following the success achieved in the first two editions. 'Our sponsorship of the championship falls within our commitment to promoting community and sporting activities, spreading the culture of chess, and encouraging local talent in this sport,' he said.
