Diaz makes debut as Bayern beat Lyon 2-1

Luis Diaz came on for his Bayern Munich debut and was involved in the opening goal in the Bundesliga champions' 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyon in a pre-season match on Saturday.
Diaz, who arrived on Wednesday for around ?75 million ($85.4 million), was pulled down by Lyon's Clinton in the 53rd minute and Michael Olise converted the ensuing penalty.
Olise completed a brace nine minutes later off Serge Gnabry before Lyon got a late consolation goal from Alejandro Rodriguez.
Diaz had three efforts saved by Lyon goalkeepers Remy Descamps and Mathieu Patouillet in Bayern's first pre-season match after a three-week holiday following a Club World Cup quarter-final exit last month.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany changed his full team at half-time, with Diaz among those coming on for the second half after youngsters including Paul Wanner, Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof had been among the starters.
Bayern have two more tune-up games before the official start, on Thursday against Tottenham Hotspur and on August 12 against Swiss side Grasshoppers.
Their first official season match is the German Super Cup on August 16 against German Cup winners
VfB Stuttgart.

dpa Munich Newly signed Jonathan Tah is ready to take a leadership role at Bayern Munich as he said the Bundesliga champions were at another level than his previous long-time club Bayer Leverkusen. Tah, 29, left Leverkusen on a free transfer in summer after 10 years, highlighted by their unbeaten domestic 2023-24 campaign for a maiden Bundesliga title and success in the German Cup. The Germany defender already played at the recent Club World Cup for Bayern who have other strong and experienced centre backs within their ranks, such as Dayot Upamecano and Kim Minjae. 'There are so many players here who have won and experienced a lot in their career - that is definitely something completely different,' Tah told club magazine 51. Bayern signed Tah to bolster their defence with his experience, and he said he was ready to do his share as Bayern aim to challenge on all fronts from the Bundesliga to the Champions League. 'I want to take on responsibility here. That's what the club expects of me, what the team probably expects of me, but above all it's what I expect of myself,' he said. 'Nevertheless, you always have to earn a role like this first.'

Leverkusen striker Schick renews contract until 2030
DPA Dusseldorf Patrick Schick has renewed his Bayer Leverkusen contract by three years until 2030 and is ready to play an important role at the Bundesliga runners-up after the exit of several stars. Czech Republic striker Schick, 29, has scored 81 goals and provided 12 assists in 168 matches since arriving in 2020. He scored 21 Bundesliga goals last season. 'With the rebuild in the next cycle at Bayer 04 we see Patrick as a motor of development,' Leverkusen managing director for sport Simon Rolfes said in a club statement on Monday. 'He combines top-quality ability and an exceptional goal return with international experience and he will give the squad the necessary stability and structure.' Leverkusen famously won the German league and cup double unbeaten in 2024, but have now lost playmaker Florian Wirtz and full back Jeeremie Frimpong to Liverpool, midfielder Granit Xhaka to Sunderland and centre back Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich. Coach Xabi Alonso has also left, for Real Madrid, with Erik ten Hag now in charge. Schick said he was ready to take more responsibility in a new-look team which includes summer signings such as midfielders Malik Tillman from PSV Eindhoven and Ibrahim Maza from Hertha Berlin, defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool, and goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford. 'I want to and will continue to contribute goals, that's my strength. In addition, I'm also looking to being a key part of the rebuild into a new team capable of winning trophies,' he said. 'The future is looking good. Bayer 04 are working very hard on building a top team for the future. Like Ronaldo: Too much rain cancels Dortmund training in Austria
DPA Dusseldorf Borussia Dortmund's first planned training session at a camp in Austria fell victim to a water-logged pitch on Monday at the same location Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr left early due to the bad weather. Heavy rain led to the adverse conditions in Saalfelden and did not allow the session which was planned for right after Dortmund's arrival. Saudi club Al Nassr with their Portuguese star Ronaldo cut their Saalfelden camp short by five days last week due to the adverse weather. Better weather is forecast from mid-week onwards in Saalfelden, where Dortmund plan to stay until Saturday. Dortmund are travelling with 30 players which include the injured trio of Nico Schlotterbeck, Julien Duranville and Emre Can. 'We are taking all players along to create a feeling of togetherness. It is important that we are together as a team,' Dortmund coach Niko Kovac said before departure from Germany. Forward Sebastien Haller was absent due to injury but expected to join by mid-week. Dortmund start the season on August 18 with a German Cup match at third division Rot-Weiss Essen, and their first Bundesliga match is five days later at St Pauli Hamburg.
