Ukraine rejects accusation by Hungarian leader Orbán over the fatal beating of a dual citizen
Orbán, a vehement critic of Ukraine and its fight to ward off Russia's full-scale invasion, told state radio that a man who reportedly died in a Ukrainian hospital earlier this month had been 'beaten to death' by his recruiters.
He didn't provide any evidence to substantiate the accusation, adding that the matter remained under investigation.
Orbán's statements came a day after Hungary's foreign ministry summoned the Ukrainian ambassador over the unconfirmed report. The ministry claimed that Ukrainian military recruiters had beaten the man as part of 'forced conscription' into the army before taking him to a recruitment center.
Ukrainian authorities have disputed the account, saying the man was a Ukrainian citizen who had left his military unit without authorization and later checked himself into a hospital. They said the hospital found no signs of physical injury indicating violence.
The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, Ukraine's embassy in Budapest wrote in a post on social media on Thursday.
'We categorically reject any allegations of forced conscription, mistreatment, or human rights violations' committed by any Ukrainian military officials, the statement said, adding that Ukraine is open to a 'transparent investigation.'
The dispute places further strain on the diplomatic relationship between Ukraine and Hungary — a member of NATO and the European Union.
While most EU countries have offered political, financial, and military support to Kyiv since Russia launched an all-out war on Feb. 24, 2022, Hungary — under Orbán — has charted a starkly different course.
Hungary has refused to supply Ukraine with weapons or allow their transit through Hungarian territory, demanding sanctions relief and rapprochement with Russia, and adopting a combative stance toward both Kyiv and its EU backers.
With his governing Fidesz party slipping in the polls and a new opposition force gaining momentum, Orbán has escalated a sweeping anti-Ukraine campaign — presenting the upcoming election as a referendum on peace or war. He has also accused Kyiv of seeking to topple his government and install a pro-Ukraine administration.
In May, there were a series of diplomatic expulsions between Hungary and Ukraine after Ukraine's main intelligence agency said that it had arrested two people on suspicion of spying for Hungary by gathering intelligence on Ukraine's military in the west of the country.

Muslims must take charge of artificial intelligence or 'be damned' as a marginalised community, the head of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has said in a leaked video. Dr Wajid Akhter, the general secretary of the MCB, said Muslims and their children risked missing the AI revolution in the same way as they had been left behind in the computer and social media revolutions. He added that while Muslims had historically been at the forefront of civilisation and were credited with some of the greatest scientific advances, they had ended up as the butt' of jokes in the modern world after failing to play a part in the latest technological revolutions. 'We already missed the industrial revolution. We missed the computer revolution. We missed the social media revolution. We will be damned and our children will damn us if we miss the AI revolution. We must take a lead,' said Dr Akther. Speaking at the MCB's AI and the Muslim Community conference on July 19, he added: 'AI needs Islam, it needs Muslims to step up.' Scientists 'made fun of' faith at computer launch Dr Akther recalled how at the launch of one of the world's earliest computers, the Mark II , US scientists brought out a prayer mat aligned towards Mecca. 'They were making fun of all religions because they felt that they had now achieved the age of reason and science and technology and we don't need that superstition any more,' he said. 'And so to show that they had achieved mastery over religion, they decided to make fun and they chose our faith. 'How did we go from a people who gave the world the most beautiful buildings, science, technology, medicine, arts to being a joke? 'I'll tell you one thing – the next time that the world is going through a revolution, the next time they go to flip that switch, they will also pull out a prayer mat and they will also line it towards the Qibla [the direction towards Mecca] and they will also pray, but this time, not to make fun of us, they will do so because they are us.' Government eases stance on MCB Dr Akther also told his audience: 'We lost each other. And ever since we lost each other, we've been falling. We've been falling ever since. We are people now who are forced, we are forced by Allah to watch the genocide of our brothers and sisters in Gaza. 'This is a punishment for us if we know it. We are people who are forced to beg the ones who are doing the killing to stop it. We are people who are two billion strong but cannot even get one bottle of water into Gaza.' Dr Akhter said Gaza had 'woken' Muslims up and showed they needed to unite. 'We will continue to fall until the day we realise that only when we are united will we be able to reverse this. Until the day we realise that we need to sacrifice for this unity,' he added. British governments have maintained a policy of 'non-engagement' with the MCB since 2009 based on claims, disputed by the council, that some of its officials have previously made extremist comments. However, Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, is drawing up a new official definition of Islamophobia, and last week it emerged the consultation has been thrown open to all groups including the MCB. Earlier this year, Sir Stephen Timms, a minister in the Department for Work and Pensions, was one of four Labour MPs to attend an MCB event. The MCB has been approached for comment. IDF preparing to intensify clampdown on haredi draft dodgers
The IDF has sent out 80,000 draft orders to haredi men and is preparing for large-scale arrest operations nationwide, in coordination with the Israel Police. The IDF is preparing to intensify measures against haredi (ultra-Orthodox) draft dodgers, shortening the period after which draft dodgers can be arrested, N12 reported on Wednesday. The IDF has sent out at least 54,000 draft orders to haredi men over the past month and is preparing for large-scale arrest operations nationwide, in coordination with the Israel Police. The IDF's current criteria state that anyone who avoids the draft for more than 540 days will be sent to prison, while those who evade for a shorter period will undergo a prompt trial process before being drafted. The military is ramping up the draft enforcement in preparation for Rosh Hashanah, when thousands of haredim are expected to travel to Uman, Ukraine, by creating a system to aid in arresting draft dodgers at Ben-Gurion Airport. In September, the IDF will hold a partial amnesty period, allowing all draft dodgers to enlist without being arrested, in exchange for a full year of regular military service, along with other conditions, N12 reported. In these instances, the charge of draft dodging will be amended, and the draft dodger will be issued with a conditional sentence. In total, the army has now issued approximately 78,000 summonses to haredi men between the ages of 17.5 and 28 during the 2024 draft year. The IDF clarified that this stage constitutes only the 'first order' — an initial call to appear at a recruitment office. Failure to respond triggers a second and third order, followed by a warning, and ultimately an arrest warrant. This large-scale draft effort coincided with a high-level emergency conference of haredi rabbinic leaders, who declared total opposition to the draft. 'It is forbidden to go into a military framework under any circumstances,' read a joint statement. 'Every young man and woman must stand firm in their faith and not be tempted to go into the army.' Head of United Torah Judaism's Degel HaTorah faction MK Moshe Gafni criticized Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara for her role in the new enforcement procedure. "Baharav-Miara declared herself the main fighter against the world of Torah, its students, and the upholders of the Jewish people. We will not allow anyone to prevent a yeshiva student from studying Torah or to stop his learning. The Jewish people are educated by the trials of history, both near and far, where attempts to prevent Torah study were made, and their end is known," Gafni said. Rabbi Meir Zvi Bergman, a senior figure in the Degel HaTorah faction of the United Torah Judaism party, warned that 'a haredi who enters the army does not leave it as a haredi' and called on students to resist, even at great personal cost. Shas chairman Arye Deri also criticized Baharav-Miara, saying that her "draconian Torah students in the Jewish state are a disgrace and a loss of mind. The use of extreme measures, akin to those used on criminals, against yeshiva students who uphold the Torah that sustains the world should shock every Jew who loves and respects the Torah. We will not allow anyone to interfere with a yeshiva student's devotion to his studies." Deri also told yeshiva students not to worry about draft orders, that they should sit and study, and that there are others who are taking care of it, as shown in video footage shared by a journalist from Army Radio. Israel will stop funding haredi yeshivot designated for draft dodgers Israel will stop funding haredi yeshivot designated specifically for at-risk youth who do not draft to the IDF, a Supreme Court ruling handed down on Monday revealed. The hearing was on a petition filed by NGO Israel Hofsheet against the funding itself. The petition came following a previous High Court of Justice ruling forbidding the state from funding yeshivot that didn't settle their status with the IDF. The so-called 'dropout yeshivot' are the Noham institutions for disengaged haredi youth. Starting from the upcoming school year - in September, funding will be discontinued for students in these yeshivot who have not resolved their status with the military.
