Report: Spurs G De'Aaron Fox signs 4-year, $229M extension
The Spurs acquired Fox from the Sacramento Kings in February, and he was slated to become an unrestricted free agent after this coming season. Instead, the team chose to lock up his contract through 2029-30.
Fox, 27, averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists per game in 17 appearances (all starts) for San Antonio. His season was cut short in March, when he had season-ending surgery to repair a tendon in his left pinkie finger.
In eight NBA seasons between the Kings and Spurs, Fox has averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals over 531 games (517 starts). He was the fifth overall draft pick by Sacramento in 2017 and won NBA Clutch Player of the Year for the 2022-23 campaign.
The Spurs will have a crowded backcourt in 2025-26 with Fox and a pair of former top-five draft picks: Stephon Castle, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and 2025 second overall selection Dylan Harper.

McMenamin: LeBron James is still monitoring the Lakers' moves
Ever since LeBron James opted into the final season of his contract in late June, there has been lots of speculation about his immediate future with the Los Angeles Lakers. That speculation stemmed from a statement his agent, Rich Paul, gave to ESPN that stated, in part, that the two "want to evaluate what's best" for the superstar moving forward. James is 40 years of age and is headed toward his record 23rd season in the NBA. It does appear he will start the new season as a member of the Lakers, but what happens afterward with him is anyone's guess, especially now that the franchise revolves around Luka Doncic, who just agreed to a three-year contract extension. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that James is supportive of Doncic being with the team, but that the four-time MVP is still looking at what the team will do to build a championship-caliber roster (at 10:42). "I'm told that the statement that Rich Paul gave to Shams Charania back in June when LeBron opted in still stands," McMenamin said. "LeBron and his representatives will be monitoring the Lakers' moves that they make, because they recognize that there's only a very limited amount of time left in his career and he wants to be competing for championships, whatever time that is." It has been rumored that James and his camp have been unhappy that the Lakers are now catering to Doncic and not James. However, Charania also reported that James is supportive of this shift. With Doncic now under contract for at least the next three years, Los Angeles can fully shift its focus to building a championship team around both superstars. Once James leaves, there's no telling how long it will take the team to find another star to put alongside Doncic, and therefore, now is the time for it to go for its 18th NBA championship, especially since Doncic made it clear that he wants to get a ring now. What the De'Aaron Fox deal means for Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle
De'Aaron Fox has reportedly signed a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs. So what comes next for this team? Fox is now under contract with the Spurs until 2029-30 and will collect an average annual value of more than $57 million per season. In a vacuum, the deal makes sense for San Antonio. Several of the players in their young core are still a few years away from requiring a similarly major pay day, so the franchise could afford to retain Fox. If the Spurs had not given this deal to Fox, they would have risked losing him as an unrestricted free agent next summer. Instead, they have shown they are committed to their next chapter of winning around Victor Wembanyama rather than rebuilding. But there is still a major question about whether Fox or someone else is the point guard of the future in San Antonio. They selected Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and also have 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year winner Stephon Castle on their roster. If they continue on the right development path, they project as the likely backcourt of the future for the Spurs. Fox, however, is far more of a "win-now" caliber player than either of his younger teammates. They now have the next three seasons to decide the right combination of guards to complement Wembanyama, the obvious face of the franchise. From a salary perspective, they won't have much to worry about until then with no other major contracts interfering on the books. From a basketball perspective, though, it gets more interesting. For what it is worth, per PBPStats: The Spurs outscored opponents by 3.07 points per 100 possessions in the 740 minutes when Wembanyama played with Castle but not Fox last season. There was a less significant sample size to evaluate when Wembanyama played with Fox but not Castle in 2024-25. But notably, the Spurs were outscored by 12.99 points per 100 in the 237 minutes in which Fox and Castle shared the court. We don't know how the group will fare with Harper in the mix as well, but they will have plenty of time to experiment with that this season. Fortunately for the Spurs, neither Castle nor Harper is undersized, so it is entirely possible that it could work out that all three could play together. Perhaps by the end of Fox's extension, it is incredibly obvious that the right mix for San Antonio involves involves Harper and Castle as their starting one and two. By then, maybe they will have to trade Fox and clear up that log jam. Because his salary is so large, it might feel difficult for the Spurs to move him at that price tag. But it may have value for value-matching purposes if, by then, San Antonio is looking to potentially add a star through the trade market. At the end of the day, it seems the front office believes that Fox puts the team in the best position to win now. The good news is that because Harper and Castle are still a rookie and sophomore, respectively, they have time until it will become too expensive to keep all three. Until then, the Spurs are simply building a team with as much talent as possible and letting it develop naturally. It would feel unfair to criticize them for that, especially with a superstar like Wembanyama in the mix. Coaches Poll Preseason Top 25 Unveiled Ahead Of 2025 College Football Season
Coaches Poll Preseason Top 25 Unveiled Ahead Of 2025 College Football Season originally appeared on The Spun. The time has finally come for the Coaches Poll to release its preseason top 25 rankings. For the most part, Texas and Ohio State have been considered the top two programs heading into the 2025 college football season. It's no surprise that there's a ton of hype surrounding Arch Manning and the Longhorns. As for the Buckeyes, they've earned a ton of respect by winning the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. Despite all the buzz surrounding Texas and Ohio State this offseason, ESPN previously had Penn State ranked No. 1 in the country. "After finally turning the corner under coach James Franklin in 2024, the Nittany Lions look loaded for bear this coming season. With Allar, Allen and Singleton returning, Penn State should have one of the most balanced offenses in the FBS, especially if Allar takes the next step as a downfield passer. Adding Pena, Ross and Hudson was critical; Penn State's receivers didn't have a reception in a 27-24 loss to Notre Dame in a CFP semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl. Pena, a slot receiver, had 84 catches for 941 yards with nine scores in 2024," ESPN's Mark Schlabach wrote. On Monday, we learned that the Coaches Poll doesn't support ESPN's way-too-early rankings. Texas was ranked No. 1 in the preseason top 25, with Ohio State claiming the No. 2 spot. Here's the full top 25: Texas Ohio State Penn State Georgia Notre Dame Clemson Oregon Alabama LSU Miami Arizona State Illinois South Carolina Michigan Ole Miss SMU Florida Tennessee Indiana Kansas State Texas A&M Iowa State BYU Texas Tech Boise State Plenty of fans are debating the bottom half of this top 25. Apparently, they don't love BYU and Texas A&M's rankings. Others are arguing that Clemson and Georgia were disrespected in the preseason Coaches Poll. Luckily for the college football world, it won't be long before the season begins.
