Written by Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong and Broadway/Metropolitan Opera veteran Michael Mayer, the musical enriches the album's thin and scattered narrative with intriguing theatricality. And with the aid of Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt, who wrote the score for the modern opera 'Next to Normal,' the album's angst-ridden guitar riffs, omnipresent and inventive bass lines, and angry, rapid-fire drumming are complemented with more traditional pit instrument orchestrations.
All this makes 'American Idiot' something unique: a musical that bears a resemblance to the traditional theatrical artform, but which comes draped in defiance, sarcasm, and youth-fueled exuberance. In this Wilbury production, under director Josh Short and musical director Milly Massey, there is enough youth-fueled exuberance to light up all of Rhode Island.
It is accompanied by a team of terrific local musicians that include Chloe Cordeiro on drums, Ernie Lau on violin, James Lucey on bass, Nick Mendillo on guitar, and Christine Perkins on cello. They are particularly good when leaning into ballads like 'Wake Me Up When September Ends,' but someone needs to turn up the volume so that their spot-on rendition of the no-frills anthem 'St. Jimmy' and the hard rocking 'Give Me Novacaine' causes a greater ripple of vibration in our ribcage. After all, this
is
a punk rock opera.
Short and his designers – Scott Osborne (scenic), Alexander P. Sprague (lighting), and Andy Russ (sound and video) – make sure that this production does not resemble the traditional theatrical artform too closely. There's more performance space than seating – which includes ramps, scaffolding, a trap door, a band stand and a band pit. Everything is littered with urban decay and surrounded by large video screens that display images that establish a sense of time, place and mindset. Much of the aforementioned defiance and sarcasm is communicated through Ali Kenner Brodsky's choreography as performed by an ensemble of frustrated, passionate, and aimless youth, played by the talented Perry Barkett, Jenna Benzinger, Alexander Boyle, Sofia DaSilva, Michael Eckenreiter, Grace Graham, Annabelle Iredale, Elisabet Ober, Paige O'Connor, Henry Stanton, and Justin Alice Voena. The dance emerges as edgy, explosive movement that would seem organic and guttural if not for the occasional moments when it appears a tad premeditated.
Eckenreiter, as Johnny, has the prerequisite hair, physicality, acting chops, and guitar virtuosity to play an endearing antihero. Just not the extraordinary voice needed to sell his solos or stand out in shared songs like 'Jesus of Suburbia' and 'Tales of Another Broken Home.' Fortunately, extraordinary voices – as well as incredible intensity and remarkable stage presence – can be found in Benzinger as Johnny's short-term girl, Whatsername; O'Connor as the walking pharmacy, St. Jimmy; Boyle and Stanton as Johnny's best friends, Tunny and Will; and Iredale as Heather, Will's pregnant girlfriend.

Jordon Hudson and Bill Belichick's ex, Linda Holliday, attend same Nantucket party months after holiday clash
It seems the ice has thawed in Nantucket. Jordon Hudson and Linda Holliday were spotted at the same Massachusetts fundraiser on Saturday, roughly eight months after Bill Belichick's current gal pal and his ex-girlfriend, respectively, clashed at a holiday affair. TMZ reported Monday that 'no issues were seen by partygoers' at the Boston Pops on Nantucket soiree, which is 'believed to be [Hudson and Holliday's] first public run-in' since the Nantucket Dreamland encounter last December, when Holliday confronted Hudson. 5 Bill Belichick and girlfriend Jordon Hudson in February 2025. Holliday and two others confronted Hudson on the dance floor, and when a staffer approached Hudson about whether 'she thought it was a good idea to be there,' the former college cheerleader defended herself, stating she hadn't done anything wrong. 5 Linda Holliday and Bill Belichick dated for 16 years before their breakup was reported in 2023. In pensive tribute after Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death, his mother says it ‘was his time'
Pamela Warner, the mother of late 'Cosby Show' star Malcolm-Jamal Warner, looked beyond loss and offered some comfort to his fans as she broke her silence about his sudden death in July. The elder Warner created an Instagram page dedicated to her son's legacy and on Friday released a contemplative and lengthy statement saying the actor-musician 'was at peace and more importantly, he did not suffer.' Warner, who was best known for his portrayal of clean-cut Theodore Huxtable, drowned while swimming in the Caribbean off Costa Rica. He was 54. Pamela Warner reflected on her son's accomplishments in TV, music and his personal life, honoring her son as a 'kind, loving man with a huge heart for humanity' and an 'exceptional' family man. In addition to his mother, the actor is survived by his wife and daughter. 'Malcolm left an indelible mark on the world and on countless hearts,' she wrote. 'All who met him, however briefly, were better for the encounter.' While she mourned the loss of her 'teacher, coach, confidant, business partner, and best friend,' Pamela Warner also reflected on giving birth to him more than 50 years ago. She said she felt 'blessed that he chose me to be his mother, to come into the world through the waters of my womb.' She went on to offer a full-circle perspective on her son's death. 'Malcolm was birthed through water and he transitioned through water,' she wrote. 'He departed as he arrived, through water. This was his time. His mission on earth had been completed.' The Emmy-nominated actor was on vacation with his family at the time of his death. He was swimming when a current pulled him deeper into the ocean. The Red Cross in Costa Rica said its first responders also tended to another man caught in the same current that claimed Warner's life. The patient, whose identity was not disclosed, survived. First responders found Warner without vital signs, and he was taken to the morgue. Pamela Warner's statement joins the collection of tributes honoring her son's life. Malcolm-Jamal Warner's co-stars including Bill Cosby, Geoffrey Owens and Raven-Symoné and, more recently, Keshia Knight Pulliam have mourned his death. 'A week ago I lost my big brother but I gained an angel,' Pulliam said of her TV brother on social media. Malcolm-Jamal Warner was a multi-faceted entertainer who in addition to acting also pursued a Grammy-winning music career. After his time on 'The Cosby Show' he also directed episodes for several other TV shows. Warner's mother's statement acknowledged his reach, encouraging his fans and loved ones to 'Hold close to whatever part of Malcolm's life that touched yours.' Her statement concluded: 'In keeping it near, you keep his spirit alive — nourishing you with the peace, love, joy and light that embodied Malcolm-Jamal Warner.'
