Empty beach but booming business in Ventnor for start of Memorial Day weekend

It's a cool and breezy start to Memorial Day weekend in Ventnor.
Few people braved the beach Friday evening.
Businesses are off to a good start with crowds due to the weather.
VENTNOR, N.J. - The week has been cooler than normal and rainy and not the perfect start to Memorial Day weekend, but conditions are promising to improve, sending many people to the Jersey shore to start their summer.
What they're saying
"It's very relaxing and you can meditate as you walk," said Henry Lewkowicz. He is getting in his steps taking a three-mile walk on the beach Friday evening in Ventnor.
"The weather has been changing. It just rained maybe about 30 to 40 minutes ago. Then it stopped. So, I put this on so I did not soaked," he said. Now it is the wind, cloudy skies and cool temperatures keeping him out of the ocean.
"Yesterday there were five fellas surfing over there. It was pretty far out. It was cold," said Lewkowicz.
Memorial Day weekend
It is not a perfect start to Memorial Day weekend but it is still the unofficial start to summer. Brett Segleman and Abbey Taub plan to make the best of it.
"We're going to find a way to enjoy the weekend," said Segelman. He and Abbey Taub were on a romantic beach stroll. They are looking forward to the weather improving over the next few days so they can take a run on the board walk, ride bikes, play pickle ball and hopefully take a dip in the ocean. But not Friday night.
"No cold plunge for you? No cold plunge here," said Segelman.
A dog and adorable little kid were the only brave ones on the mostly empty beach splashing around. But the ocean is not the only attraction.
Shore business is good
Businesses like Ventnor Social are busy regardless of the weather. There's live entertainment, an arcade for kids like seven-year-old Nora visiting with family and friends and of course lots of food.
"It's always a good time. No matter the weather, it's always a good time," said Marivette Hinds, who is visiting with family and friends. They will be doing a little bit of work and a little bit of play. They have a home in Ventnor.
"We plan on fixing up some things around our place to get it ready for the summer," she said.
Friday night they are inside but tomorrow they are hoping to really start the holiday and hit the beach.
"My son is ready to touch his feet in the sand so I think tomorrow, regardless of the temperature, we're just going to go out there," she said.

Heat builds across Maryland this week
A few isolated storms could develop across western Maryland this evening, with a low chance that one or two could drift as far east as the I-95 corridor. Any storm that does form may be capable of producing damaging winds and small hail. Temperatures topped out in the upper 70s to low 80s Monday afternoon. Tonight, skies will gradually clear behind any passing storms, with overnight lows settling around 70 degrees. A cold front approaches the region Tuesday morning and will pass through during the late morning to early afternoon hours. While most of the area will remain dry, far southern Maryland could see a brief shower or thunderstorm during the afternoon. Tuesday's high temperatures will reach the low to mid 80s before cooler and slightly less humid air filters in Tuesday night. Overnight lows will dip into the mid 60s. By midweek, summerlike heat begins to build. Highs Wednesday will climb into the upper 80s. On Thursday, Baltimore could see its first 90-degree day of the year as temperatures peak near the 90-degree mark under mostly sunny skies. The heat continues into Friday, with highs again reaching the upper 80s to near 90. Humidity will also increase, and a few storms could pop up late in the day. A stronger cold front arrives this weekend, bringing more widespread storm chances. Saturday afternoon looks particularly unsettled, with a high likelihood of thunderstorms. Rain and storm chances linger into Father's Day on Sunday, with cooler highs in the 70s. The unsettled pattern is expected to continue into Monday and Tuesday next week, with isolated showers and storms and highs holding in the 70s.

Fans excited as U.S. Open practice rounds get underway at Oakmont Country Club
Practice rounds for the 2025 U.S. Open began Monday morning at Oakmont Country Club. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to watch the tournament this week. As the sun rose on this practice round opening day, spectators were certainly ready to catch a glimpse of some of golf's best players. "Wanted to get up early and be the first ones here," Lucas Beaver of Ross Township said. Beaver and Brenton Perkins are pumped for Monday's practice round. "I'm excited to watch great golf, to be around greatness in a sense," Perkins said. Judging by the cars and the clickers, they're not the only ones excited. KDKA-TV caught people from western Pennsylvania, Erie, and even Alberta, Canada. "Just wanted to see all the players, see the course," Lindsay Glisan of Franklin Park said. "Come out [and] hopefully enjoy a beautiful day." The weather held up on Monday morning, but the road to seeing the green didn't come without a little brown, with lots of mud from Sunday's downpours. "I'm annoyed with it; my shoes are already too dirty," one spectator told KDKA-TV. None of that is putting a damper on these people, though. "We've been waiting for this to come here for a couple of years," Glisan said. Now that it's here, people are excited to see their favorite players, from Scottie Scheffler to Colin Morikawa and Jason Day. For many, it's just special to see these guys in our backyard on a course with so much history. "So many greats have walked there. Ben Hogans, your Arnold Palmers, your Jack Nicklaus'," Perkins said. Now, they'll watch the current generation hit the links at Oakmont Country Club. "To be able to be that close to see what they're doing, and to experience that level of focus, it can be really inspiring," Perkins said. Monday through Wednesday are the practice rounds. Championship rounds are Thursday through Sunday.
