Good news for Maharashtra! Power bills to get lower, govt to cut tariffs by 26% in 5 years
Consumers in Maharashtra rejoice! According Power tariffs in Maharashtra will be slashed by 26 per cent in five years, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday, starting with 10 per cent in the initial year, which is the first in the history of the state.
"For the first time in the history of the state, electricity rates will be reduced by 10 per cent in the first year and 26 per cent in five years in phases. We are grateful to the Maharashtra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for giving this verdict on the petition of Mahavitaran," Fadnavis, who holds the energy portfolio, posted on X.
Earlier, petitions for a 10 per cent increase in electricity tariffs were submitted to MERC. But, for the first time in the history of the state, Mahavitaran filed a petition to reduce electricity tariffs which was accepted by the MERC, he added.
The order will cover all three categories of domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers.
He said for 70 per cent of consumers using less than 100 units of electricity, the maximum rate reduction of 10 per cent will be achieved.
Fadnavis also said that the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0 work is underway on a war footing to ensure day-time and reliable electricity supply to farmers.
"Along with this, due to the large emphasis on green energy in the power purchase agreements in the coming period, there will be savings in the cost of purchasing electricity," he added.

MSEDCL hikes tariffs by up to 3% for 100+unit users
The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission ( MERC ) has come out with the tariff orders for state power utility firm MSEDCL, which shows a marginal increase in tariff from 0.5 to 3 per cent for low and high-end residential consumers having monthly electricity consumption over 100 units. In the 0-100 consumption category, there is relief as the orders showed a drop of 9 per cent in tariff this financial year. The new tariffs will come into effect from July 1. MSEDCL tariffs continue to be the highest in the state as compared to BEST, Tata Power and Adani Electricity. MSEDCL managing director Lokesh Chandra said that 70percent of consumers were in the 0-100 units category and they have got huge relief. Experts said that the last tariff announced by MERC in March had a 4-13 per cent drop in rates for MSEDCL which was better than the present tariff structure. Another feature of the order included an additional 10 per cent TOD discount for daytime electricity use for residential consumers with smart meters and incentives for residential consumers generating solar energy.

"We are building Vadhavan Port, which will be three times bigger than Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, the largest port of our country that handles 60 per cent of our container traffic. The Prime Minister laid the foundation of Vadhavan Port. Due to this, Maharashtra is emerging as a magnet for industry and logistics in the country," he said.
