She blamed committee-led decisions for the industry's lack of creativity
The actor also reflected on the box office failure of 'Madame Web'
Actor Dakota Johnson expressed her views on the risk-averse nature of Hollywood. While criticising the remake culture, she reflected on the creative compromises and the audience's reaction to repetitive content.
In an interview with Hot Ones for their YouTube channel during her 'Materialists' press tour, the actor said, "I think it's hard when creative decisions are made by committee, and it's hard when creative decisions are made by people who don't even really watch movies or know anything about them, and that tends to be what's occurring a lot."
She also emphasised the remake addiction and said, "When something does well, studios want to keep that going so they remake the same things, but humans don't want that."
"They want fresh, they want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things, so I don't know, I guess it's all just a bit of a mess right now, isn't it," she added.
The '50 Shades of Grey' actor actor also highlighted the failure of her superhero film 'Madame Web' (2024), which earned merely US dollar 43 million at the domestic box office and an 11 per cwnt rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
During her interview, Johnson said that she 'tried' and 'failed' to be a superhero.
Since, the box office debacle of 'Madame Web', the actor has been vocal about it in most of her media interactions.
In an interview with Los Angeles Times , she said, "It wasn't my fault."
"There's this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don't have a creative bone in their body. And it's really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way," Johnson went on.
The actor further said, "I think unfortunately, with 'Madame Web,' it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger budget movies fail all the time."
Johnson was recently seen in 'Materialists' with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.
India Today , in its review for 'Marerialists' wrote, "The prettiness of the film, and a brilliant Pascal in it, make 'Materialists' a one-time watch. Oh, and there are no sizzling intimate scenes to elevate the romance. A Mr Darcy-style ('Pride and Prejudice') monologue from Evans? Yes. But a drool-worthy Noah-and-Allie ('The Notebook') kiss? Not quite."
'Materialists' released in theatres on June 13, 2025.

Jin admits feeling 'awkward' performing duets outside BTS despite well-loved collab with YENA: 'It's difficult when...'

On June 15, BIGHIT MUSIC released a behind-the-scenes video titled 'Jin (진) Dingo Live Shoot Sketch' on the official BANGTANTV YouTube channel. The clip captured the BTS member preparing for a live performance of his song Loser, which features soloist YENA. The video offered fans a rare glimpse into Jin 's working process. It includes vocal rehearsals, candid reflections, and his honest thoughts about duet performances. Jin admits duets feel 'awkward' without BTS While the video was packed with light-hearted and playful moments, Jin took time to speak openly about the challenges he faces when singing with other artists. Jin shared that collaborating with outside performers, even someone as talented as YENA, can feel emotionally and musically unfamiliar. "It feels a bit awkward singing with people that aren't the members. I've worked with the members for at least a decade,' he stated. 'I can't help but respect people that do duets. For me... It's difficult when I hear someone else's voice.' He further explained, 'I guess it gets a bit confusing? When you sing, you sometimes end up following the other person's note. Since they're singing at a different note than me, it's a bit difficult but I'm doing my best.' Despite the discomfort, Jin said he continues to give his best, approaching every situation with professionalism. Fans praise Loser Despite Jin's own reservations, his duet with YENA on Loser has been met with overwhelming praise. The track combines his soothing delivery with YENA's powerful vocals, creating a unique soundscape that stands out within the album. Fans have taken to social media to rave about the song and musical chemistry. Loser is one of the tracks on Jin's solo album Echo, which dropped on May 16, 2025. The project marks a meaningful chapter in Jin's solo career. It gives fans a deeper look into his emotional and creative range. About Jin's Echo album Echo is a deeply personal 7-track album filled with reflective ballads, emotional vocals, and understated instrumentation. The title track Don't Say You Love Me is paired with a cinematic music video starring actress Shin Se Kyung. The album explores themes of longing, growth, and self-identity. The subjects resonate strongly with fans who've waited months for Jin's return. Echo tracklist: Don't Say You Love Me – Title Track Nothing Without Your Love Loser (feat. YENA) Rope It 구름과 떠나는 여행 (With the Clouds) Background 오늘의 나에게 (To Me, Today) Although Jin has confessed that working outside his comfort zone can be mentally demanding, his recent efforts show a willingness to grow as a soloist.

Ballerina and Materialists box office collection Day 2: Ana de Armas and Dakota Johnson starrers sees good growth on Saturday

Hollywood's big weekend at the Indian box office saw a promising upswing in collections as Ana de Armas-led Ballerina and Dakota Johnson 's Materialists battled for audience attention alongside the family-friendly How to Train Your Dragon, which continues to dominate. Spinning out from the John Wick universe, Ballerina (also available in 4DX) made a confident leap at the Indian box office. After an opening day collection of Rs 1.6 crore on Friday, the action-thriller saw a significant jump of 68% on Saturday, earning an estimated Rs 2.7 crore. This brings its two-day domestic total to Rs 4.3 crore, according to data from Sacnilk. A large chunk of the revenue came from English-language shows, which contributed approximately Rs 3.38 crore of the total. The dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu collectively added the remaining Rs 92 lakh, indicating the franchise's continued appeal among urban, English-speaking audiences. Ballerina, headlined by Ana de Armas , is set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, and has benefited from brand recognition and a visually immersive 4DX release. It has managed to secure the second-highest box office opening for a Hollywood film this weekend, trailing only behind How to Train Your Dragon, which is on track to cross the Rs 10 crore mark. Meanwhile, Materialists—a romantic comedy starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans , and Pedro Pascal , and directed by Celine Song—had a softer start, opening with Rs 60 lakh on Friday. However, the film doubled its collections on Saturday, earning Rs 1.31 crore and bringing its two-day total to Rs 1.91 crore. Though behind Ballerina in the domestic market, Materialist is making headlines globally. The film debuted with an impressive $12 million in North America, marking the third-highest opening ever for A24, behind only Civil War ($25.5 million) and Hereditary ($13.5 million). This performance continues the recent momentum for rom-coms at the box office, following the success of Ticket to Paradise ($16.5 million) and Anyone But You ($6 million). With Father's Day on Sunday and positive word of mouth, all three films are expected to benefit from weekend footfall. Ballerina may cross Rs 6 crore by the end of the weekend, while Materialist could reach Rs 3 crore, depending on Sunday's momentum. How to Train Your Dragon, buoyed by family audiences and critical praise, is leading the pack and poised to be the weekend's breakout winner.
