Kolkata: The centralised undergraduate admission portal, inaugurated by education minister Bratya Basu on Tuesday, will start receiving applications from 10 am on Wednesday for nine lakh seats across 460 colleges and 17 universities in Bengal.

Minority and autonomous institutes as well as unitary universities, such as Presidency University and Jadavpur University, are not under the centralised portal. BEd and fine and performing arts courses at Rabindra Bharati University are excluded, too.
Hours before the Calcutta High Court stayed a gazette notification on OBC, including 140 subgroups, 80 among which are Muslims, till July 31, Basu told reporters the OBC-related case at the HC would not affect admissions.
"There will be no impact. Should agricultural work stop because of predictions of drought or heavy rain? We will continue our work. If there is any instruction, we will take emergency measures," he said.
Another official, too, urged students to go ahead with admissions.
Each candidate can apply for 25 programmes or courses at one or multiple institutes in the state. The last date for applications is July 1, the first merit list will be published on July 6, and the first round of admissions will be held between July 6 and July 12.
No application fee will be required, and students from any part of the country can apply.
Basu said, "Last year, more than 4.4 lakh students took admission through this portal. The system ensures a transparent, systematic and easy-to-access process. Candidates can opt for courses and institutes of their choice on this single-window platform. It stops students from taking multiple admissions at the same time. A chatbot, 'Bina', will help candidates navigate through the process."

Once the merit list is published, students can book a seat, which can be upgraded in the next round, subject to seat vacancy and merit position. Applicants can keep tabs on their status on a dashboard. Candidates will pay once through the portal while taking provisional admission. "But they may have to pay extra if they go in for a seat upgrade, depending on the institute fee," said an official. "Eligible applicants will be notified via SMS and email.
"
On the delay in the opening of the admission portal and apprehensions about filling seats, Basu said, "Admissions were stalled due to the OBC-reservation issue. But once the backward classes welfare department published the gazette notification, we opened the portal in seven days. We are on a par with the UGC timeline. We plan to rationalise seats—increase seats for subjects in demand and at colleges, where the rush is more.

Karnataka Congress needs more than holding OBC meet here to woo the communities to party, say activists

As the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has formed the Other Backward Classes (OBC) Advisory Council, which is set to meet in Bengaluru on July 15 to deliberate on the party's strategies to woo the OBCs, community leaders and activists believe that the party's exercise could be futile without a concrete show of its commitment in Karnataka, which is among the three States where it is in power. Last week, the council's formation itself was stuck in a political storm in the State, where an embarrassing leadership tussle is under way to replace Siddaramaiah, the only OBC Chief Minister from the Congress in the country now. Meanwhile, those who have worked among the backward classes believe that the Congress government headed by Mr. Siddaramaiah has done little in concrete terms to benefit the most backward and more backward castes within the larger OBCs in the State. The 24-member national panel formed by the AICC to discuss and strategise ways to woo the OBCs in the country includes Mr. Siddaramaiah, former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily, and B.K. Hariprasad, MLC, from Karnataka. Setting aside the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey (caste census), conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes headed by H. Kantharaj in 2015 and the recommendations submitted by the K. Jayaprakash Hegde commission in 2024, apparently under pressure from the land-owning and politically dominant Veerashaiva-Lingayats and Vokkaligas, is viewed as a failure of the Congress government's OBC politics in Karnataka. In fact, the Federation of Oppressed Classes, whose many leaders are from the Congress, have also criticised the decision. Though a new survey has been announced, leaders and experts have been skeptical about it. Missed opportunity 'The Congress lost an opportunity to bring the most backward castes that are in the society's margins into the mainstream,' said a senior functionary in the party. 'The government sacrificed the interests of the most backward and more backward castes, which do not have political clout or representation in politics or bureaucracy, under pressure from two dominant communities that have bulldozed themselves into the OBC list. The government could have released the report and recommendations for public discussion, and formulated programmes for the most backward and more backward classes without getting stuck in the number game.' Over the past few years, fearing dilution of their clout in politics over the population size as indicated in the survey, Veerashaiva-Lingayats and Vokkaligas have virulently opposed the findings, terming them as 'unscientific' and 'outdated'. A source formerly associated with the commission, asked, 'Who is the Congress trying to woo back? In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the backward classes have their own parties. In Karnataka, Vokkaligas have what we could call their own party (Janata Dal-Secular), and Veerashaiva-Lingayats are seen as mostly with the BJP. The most and more backward classes are scattered but leaning towards the BJP more now.' He pointed out that the BJP recognised the importance of organising the numerically smaller backward castes by providing political representation and also choosing unheralded heroes from such communities for national awards, he pointed out. He sought to know if the OBC cell is even active in the Congress in Karnataka. Dominant within OBC matrix While nearly 70% of Karnataka's population has been identified as OBCs, about 40% of the OBC population comprises the politically dominant Lingayats (11%), Vokkaligas (10.29%), and Kurubas (7.3%), which total to about 28% of the State's population. Nearly half a dozen castes, including Ediga, Uppara, and Yadava, are seen to have progressed ahead of smaller castes. The nomadic, semi-nomadic, and minor communities, who constitute about 50% of the OBC population, have a meagre chance to compete in education or employment and do not receive political representation due to their small population size, sources in the commission said. 'If the Congress is looking at the numbers, it should look at the oppressed castes within the larger OBC fold. The Congress government has not made any attempt to do that while it is pandering to the politically important and numerically large three castes. The advisory council also does not have representation from the oppressed castes,' rued another source, who has worked in the backward classes commission.

Iran embassy in India dismisses fake X handle's claim Kashmir is in Pakistan, ‘attempt' to damage ties

The account 'Daily Iran News' has around 4,00,000 followers and posts inflammatory content on X around geopolitical developments. In its post Friday it wrote, 'Taiwan is part of #China & Kashmir is part of #Pakistan. Do you agree?' In a formal response, the Iranian embassy in India stated, 'Some fake channels, under the name of Iran, are attempting to damage Iran-India relations. This account does not belong to Iran.' Accompanying the statement were maps of India and China. New Delhi: After a tweet from an account purporting to represent Iran said that Kashmir belongs to Pakistan and Taiwan to China, the Iranian embassy in New Delhi Saturday, swiftly rejected the claims, calling the account 'fake' and an attempt to damage India-Iran relations. Some fake channels, under the name of Iran, are attempting to damage Iran-India relations. This account does not belong to Iran. 🇮🇷 🇮🇳 — Iran in India (@Iran_in_India) July 12, 2025 India has always shared cordial relations with Iran, despite the Supreme Leader Khamenei's occasional comments on Kashmir, which India considers an internal matter. In June, Iran even made a special gesture by opening its airspace to help India evacuate its nationals during the Iran-Israel conflict. Days later, following US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, India was among the first nations Tehran reached out to. Despite occasional criticism from Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei over Kashmir and the treatment of Muslims, Tehran has never acted against Indian interests, while India continues to invest in key projects like the Chabahar Port and views Iran as strategically vital, given its location near Afghanistan and Pakistan. Even as India's defence and tech ties with Israel have grown stronger under Prime Minister Modi, New Delhi has maintained steady relations with Tehran, despite U.S. sanctions. After Khamenei's remarks last year, India expressed strong displeasure and has since sought direct engagement with the Iranian leadership to manage differences. On China, Iran's broader foreign policy remains aligned on major geopolitical issues, including its support for Beijing's sovereignty claims over Taiwan. Tehran has consistently criticised US moves that bolster Taiwan's international status, viewing them as provocations undermining Chinese territorial integrity. The relationship between Iran and China, though often described as strategic, is deeply shaped by economic necessity. Facing long-standing sanctions and isolation from Western markets, Iran has turned increasingly toward China, adopting a 'Look East' economic strategy. China has emerged as Iran's top trading partner, oil buyer, and investor. Beijing sees Tehran not only as a major energy supplier but also as a crucial transit corridor in its evolving 'New Silk Road' strategy linking Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. BJP MP K Laxman slams Congress govt over BC reservations ordinance and 10% Muslim OBC quota

BJP MP (Rajya Sabha) K. Laxman has accused the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government of betraying the Backward Classes (BC) in the State with its decision to issue an ordinance for the implementation of 42% reservations in local body elections as such a move would lead to legal issues and ultimately harm the BCs since the Bills related to BC reservations are due for President's assent. Speaking to the media in New Delhi on Saturday, Mr. Laxman said that the Congress government lacks commitment towards BC community members. He also alleged that the party and its leader, Rahul Gandhi, are resorting to appeasement politics by stating that 10% of Muslims in the State are BCs. 'Rahul Gandhi says the Telangana caste census is a role model for the country. What kind of role model do you want to create? We have 12% Muslim population, and now you're saying that 10% of them are OBCs. This will eat away the rightful share of the BCs,' he alleged. According to Mr. Laxman, the percentage of BCs in the State before the Congress came to power was 51%. 'Now the BC percentage has come down to 46%, and the 10% Muslims are also being included in the BCs,' he said. Laxman also slammed BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president K Kavitha for taking credit for the government's decision to issue the ordinance. 'While Kavitha is celebrating the decision, her party leaders are making comments against it. This double standard must be condemned,' Laxman said and questioned why the State government is not disclosing the population details of each caste that falls under the BCs.
