The first-ever BMW M3 EV has been spied on the street with more of its production body on show.
It's been clear for a while now the electric
3 Series
— possibly badged
i3
— and the
M3
spin-off will have styling based closely on the
2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept
.
Like the concept, the production i3/M3 has long, flat bonnet and boot lid, as well as low belt line. Up front there's a wide double kidney grille that blends seamlessly into the headlights.

At the back a strip of tail-lights lives high up near the boot lid. Unfortunately this car still isn't wearing production-ready lighting units.
In the translation to production, the side windows have grown a little deeper and gained frames.
Unlike the
prototype spied at the beginning of the year
, which had a circular disguise pattern on the fenders, we can now properly see bulging wheel arches that will be exclusive to the M3. Naturally the fatter fenders house the car's chunkier rubber and wider track.
Our spy photography says this prototype was wearing 20-inch alloy wheels with 275/35 Michelin tyres at the front, and 295/35 rubber at the rear.
The agency was also able to zoom in a bit to the interior, where we can see the dashboard features a large central touchscreen, but intriguingly no instrumentation panel directly ahead of the driver.
That's because the production i3/M3 will use the new
Panoramic iDrive system
, which features a pillar-to-pillar digital display at the base of the windscreen for the instruments, compass, media, climate control, and other items.
It's understood the M3 will have an electric motor for each wheel, and generate around 746kW in total or 1000hp in the old money.
In order to entice performance heads over to the M3 EV, it will likely be quicker to 100km/h than today's 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six-powered
M3 CS
, which requires 3.4 seconds to bring up the century.
Under the skin, the new i3/M3 will use BMW's Neue Klasse EV architecture. The first car based on the platform will be the next-generation
iX3 SUV
, which is expected to debut some time this year. This will be followed by the i3 in 2026, and the M3 should follow in either 2027 or 2028.

Kia Australia's product boss wants a more affordable, entry-level Sportage Hybrid (HEV) variant to better compete with the top-selling Toyota RAV4 , but he can't confirm exactly when such an option will become available. Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch of the facelifted Sportage, Kia Australia's general manager for product Roland Rivero said his team's next priority for the upgraded mid-size SUV range is adding a cheaper hybrid grade, but getting it here could be an uphill battle. 'What we need to monitor first is this trim and powertrain strategy [the new all-wheel drive HEV variants in SX and GT-Line trims]. We want to see how this goes in the marketplace,' Mr Rivero told CarExpert. 'On top of that, we have to marry it up to how much supply we can get. Hybrid production [for Australia] is shared with the United States, so we sometimes don't get the lion's share of hybrids.' Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. 'We're quite happy that… we've got enough supply to do SX and GT-Line across [Hybrid] all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, and to ask for another variant means we're going to need more supply. 'If the stars do align, we can bring [entry-level Sportage S HEV variants] in. It's easy to create the variant, but not necessarily easy to get the supply of it. So we've got to juggle that right now and see how we go – timing wise… I don't know,' Mr Rivero added. Notwithstanding his desire for a cheaper S-spec version of the Sportage hybrid, Mr Rivero said supply of petrol-electric Sportage vehicles has improved slightly for the model's mid-life facelift, and currently sits somewhere between 400 and 500 units per month compared to the 300/month total for the pre-facelift model. During the Sportage media conference, Mr Rivero also indicated that initial orders are showing a 60:40 split between AWD and front-wheel drive Sportage Hybrid variants, which is unsurprising given AWD hybrids have previously been unavailable in Australia. The most affordable Sportage HEV in Australia is the SX FWD, which starts from $46,450 plus on-road costs. A cheaper front-drive Sportage S hybrid would likely drop that figure to around $42,000. Australia's favourite SUV, the hybrid-only Toyota RAV4, is currently priced from $42,260 plus on-road costs for the cheapest GX 2WD variant. The Kia Sportage lineup is currently the fourth best-selling mid-size SUV in Australia based on VFACTS new-vehicle sales data, with 8723 units registered between January 1 and May 31 this year. Its 9.4 per cent share of the nation's largest auto market segment is bested by the aforementioned RAV4 (with 21,613 sales in the same period), as well as the Mitsubishi Outlander (10,203) and Mazda CX-5 (9409). For the 2024 calendar year, the Sportage line notched up 22,210 registrations (up 41.0 per cent year-on-year), again placing it fourth behind the same rivals in the same order. Interestingly, the related Hyundai Tucson lineup (7940 sales YTD) trails the Sportage in terms of popularity, despite offering double the number of hybrid variants – eight versus just four for the updated Sportage. Kia K4 Hatch to debut more efficient engine in Australia

The Kia K4 small car range is set to grow in Australia during the fourth quarter of 2025, and the Korean brand's local product boss has confirmed it will include the debut of a new, more efficient petrol engine option Down Under. Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch of the updated Sportage mid-size range, Kia Australia's general manager for product planning Roland Rivero wouldn't be drawn on the local prospects for the K4 Hybrid (HEV), which is yet to be revealed, but he did confirm a more efficient drivetrain is coming to the core K4 lineup. 'We've got [the] hatchback first – the K4 Hatch. That does adopt a new powertrain which you're familiar with from the Seltos… which helps us out from a CO2 perspective – that will be our first adjustment in light of NVES [the federal government's New vehicle Efficiency Standard],' Mr Rivero said. The powertrain in question is the Atkinson-cycle 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with what Hyundai and Kia call an 'IVT' or Intelligent Variable Transmission. Effectively, it's Hyundai/Kia-speak for a CVT. As Mr Rivero mentioned, this drivetrain is already on sale locally in the Seltos small SUV, and also serves in the related Hyundai i30 Sedan and Kona crossover. Due to its more efficient Atkinson cycle, the new engine makes slightly less grunt than the existing 2.0-litre 'MPI' engine (110kW/180Nm versus 112kW/192Nm) but is claimed to be more fuel-efficient, helped in part by the different transmission. 'The CO2 on that is better than even the 1.6 turbo – I think it's about a 30g/km improvement [over the 2.0L MPI]. Whether we spec it with [idle stop/start] is TBC,' Mr Rivero added. The current 2.0L MPI engine with a six-speed automatic in the K4 Sedan quotes combined fuel consumption of 7.4L/100km and CO2 emissions of 167g/km, while the more powerful 1.6 T-GDI engine in the GT-Line with its eight-speed auto quotes 6.7L/100km and 158g/km. For reference, the related Hyundai i30 Sedan with the Smartstream-branded Atkinson-cycle engine and CVT quotes a much thriftier 6.1L/100km and 139g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle. Mr Rivero said the new drivetrain will be applied to both the upcoming K4 Hatch as well as the existing K4 Sedan during the fourth quarter of 2025, likely coinciding with model year 2026 (MY26) production. As yet there's still no word on a K4 Hybrid or HEV variant, which has been all but confirmed for a future introduction. It will almost certainly draw upon the 1.6-litre hybrid system used in the i30 Sedan and Kona hybrids, which makes 104kW and 265Nm. Since launching earlier this year, the Kia K4 has managed 1892 registrations to the end of May. By comparison, its top-selling predecessor, the Cerato, managed 6323 registrations during the January-May 2024 period. But last month, the new sedan-only K4 outsold the outgoing Cerato hatch and sedan with 577 sales versus just 68, which was nevertheless short of segment leaders including the Toyota Corolla (1576), Hyundai i30 (909) and Mazda 3 (735). However, the K4 currently lacks an ANCAP safety rating, which is a requirement for many of the large fleet customers that account for a large proportion of small car sales across the industry, so the addition of a more popular hatchback body style and an independent safety rating should give the K4 a significant shot in the arm. 'It's taken a few months… but now [the K4] is starting to build momentum. Once it gets its ANCAP rating, it will open the door to fleets,' said Dean Norbiato, general manager for marketing at Kia Australia. 'Then we get the hatchback. We are a hatch-biased market, so when that comes at the back end of the year we're really confident in that product taking over a really important model in the Cerato, and that hatch in particular will definitely meet the demand and appetite of the Australian market as well.' Kia Australia says it's not looking to extend its factory warranty beyond seven years, regardless of the increasing number of other auto brands – including its own sister brand Hyundai – now offering aftersales coverage for the same period or longer. Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian launch of the facelifted Sportage SUV, the company's general manager for product Roland Rivero said the Korean brand's once-benchmark warranty is no longer a key reason for purchase for its customers, and therefore it's focusing on other areas. 'I think we were very fortunate when we did launch [that] very definitive seven-year warranty… with how much clear air time we had before other OEMs [automakers] introduced theirs. That did a great job for our brand. It gave people permission to look at a Kia product, and for that point in time and where the brand was at, it was required,' Mr Rivero said. Supplied Credit: CarExpert 'Where the brand is at now, the warranty component is not so much the driver of what makes customers walk into our showroom. We're quite happy with where it is at the moment – the same as what we launched back in October 2014 – and there are no plans that I'm aware of to change or go any higher. 'I think that component of reason for purchase, which was once probably number one, isn't quite number one anymore. It's slipped further down, and more of a closing component, as opposed to the main reason to attract customers into the Kia brand,' Mr Rivero added. Kia Australia was the first brand in Australia to offer a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre new-vehicle warranty, which commenced on October 1, 2014. Unlike many brands at the time that stipulated conditions around roadside assistance, capped-price servicing or mileage, Kia's comprehensive cover also included roadside assistance and capped price servicing for the same period. Before that, Hyundai Australia pioneered the five-year warranty back in 2007. Kia followed suit in 2008, at a time when the warranties of most brands didn't extend past three years or 150,000km, at best. Supplied Credit: CarExpert On July 1, 2025, Korean compatriot Hyundai Australia will move to a similar seven-year/unlimited-km warranty, which will be backdated to all new vehicles registered from January 1, 2025. The introduction of a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty brings Hyundai in line with sister brand Kia, as well as Chery and Skoda, which is the only European brand backing its vehicles with seven years of coverage. Nissan Australia moved to a conditional 10-year/300,000km warranty earlier this year – contingent on vehicles behind serviced within the brand's dealer network over that time – matching Alliance partner Mitsubishi's similar program (albeit limited to 200,000km). MG Motor Australia covers all of its vehicles with a 10-year/250,000km warranty with no servicing requirement to extend the coverage to a decade – though it's only for private buyers who don't use their vehicles for commercial purposes.
