Killer driver 'used vehicle as weapon' during Glasgow hit and run

Glasgow Times10-07-2025
Michael Day, 25, was ordered to serve at least 20 years in prison before he can apply to seek release on parole.
A judge told Day at the High Court in Edinburgh: "This was a deliberate, sustained attack on two individuals in which you repeatedly used your vehicle as a weapon."
(Image: Thomas Bowers) Lord Harrower said Day has shown "no remorse" for what he did and appeared to have no insight into his offending.
The judge said that he was conscious that no sentence the court imposed could alleviate the suffering of the deceased's family.
Day was earlier convicted of murdering Thomas Bowers and attempting to murder Stephen Byrne in a car attack in the early hours of April 14 in 2023 in the Springburn area of Glasgow.
He drove onto a pavement at Petershill Road before mowing down the men and then driving again at the stricken victims.

Mr Bowers, 33, later died of injuries sustained in the attack and Mr Byrne, 53, was left seriously injured and permanently disfigured following the murder bid on him.
Day, a prisoner, rammed them with a Vauxhall Astra minutes after a confrontation at a nearby flat. Day had been using a flat in the area for drug trafficking.
The attack survivor told a court that before he was hit by the car he heard an engine revving. He said: "I remember trying to jump as the car came towards me."
He said he was drifting in and out of consciousness as he lay on the ground after he was struck. He asked people in the street to call an ambulance to come to their aid.

Drug offender Day had denied committing the murder during the attack at Petershill Road at its junction with Auchinloch Street but was found guilty of the crime. The court heard he continues to maintain his innocence.
Prosecutors alleged that after the attack Day removed a sim card from a mobile phone and fled to a caravan park in Ayr.
Defence counsel Mark Moir KC said: "On any view this was an appalling act of violence."

Noel Stanton's Jesus Army: The cult urged followers to donate their 'genitals to Jesus'

Noel Stanton turned the Jesus Army into one of the largest and most controversial religious movements in the UK - but it was later revealed to be a hotbed of abuse Charismatic preacher Noel Stanton, who started as a modest Baptist minister, went on to establish a formidable religious empire known as the Jesus Army, which concealed years of appalling abuse behind its spiritual facade. ‌ Noel Stanton was born on Christmas Day in 1926 and initially embarked on his journey as a traditional clergyman. However, in the 1970s, he transformed himself into the pioneer of an avant-garde Christian commune in the Northamptonshire countryside. ‌ His venture, initially a daring leap of faith, would later become one of the UK's most contentious religious sects. ‌ Stanton called upon his disciples to relinquish their worldly goods, properties, and even their offspring, with the promise of creating a utopian "heaven on Earth." The Jesus Fellowship Church, commonly referred to as the Jesus Army, expanded from a modest Bugbrooke congregation to a nationwide entity with a membership running into the thousands, unlike other infamous cults that remained relatively obscure, reports the Express. His adherents resided in austere communal homes, forfeiting their earnings and independence while strictly observing his increasingly stringent edicts. Public proselytising became the hallmark of the group, with vibrant Jesus Army buses and street teams donning distinctive jackets becoming a common spectacle throughout Britain. ‌ However, a darker reality lurked beneath the surface. A 1993 documentary captured Stanton exhorting his followers to dedicate their "genitals to Jesus," a statement that now resonates ominously amidst subsequent sexual abuse claims. His fixation on sexual chastity, coupled with his totalitarian grip on his followers' lives, set the stage for endemic abuse. ‌ When Stanton passed away on May 20, 2009, at the age of 82, he left behind not only a religious movement but also a community teetering on the brink of disintegration. Despite maintaining an image of success, signs of internal strife were beginning to show. His final resting place is at New Creation Farm in Nether Heyford, a site maintained through the financial support of his disciples. Following his death, distressing accusations emerged. Victims stepped forward with allegations of systematic physical, emotional, and sexual abuse that had occurred over many years. ‌ Children were reportedly subjected to harsh "rodding" using birch canes and frightening "exorcisms" aimed at casting out presumed demons. Former members have spoken out about how stringent regulations cut them off from their families and how life choices were dictated by designated leaders. In 2019, the Jesus Army was formally dissolved. Its legal entity, the Jesus Fellowship Community Trust, initiated a Redress Scheme to provide recompense to those harmed. The scheme saw hundreds reveal their experiences of mistreatment, leading the Trust to admit the "serious harm" inflicted. The new BBC documentary, Inside the Cult of the Jesus Army, provides a chilling examination of how Stanton's vision for Christian fellowship deteriorated into a prolonged ordeal. Featuring poignant accounts from those who endured suffering, it exposes a group that outwardly appeared devout yet hid profound and enduring damage. What started as a pursuit of spiritual kinship culminated in devastation for numerous individuals – serving as a grim reminder of the potential for fervent belief to be perverted into manipulation, domination, and maltreatment.

Scots beauty spot compared to 'Skid Row' as rowdy tourists drink and party

The site has been branded 'Skid Row' by furious locals as it has been invaded by tourists who camp beside the water and party through the night A picturesque Scottish site, Loch of Clunie in Perthshire, has been dubbed "Skid Row" as it's been overrun by unruly tourists indulging in alcohol-fuelled parties and criminal activities. ‌ The once tranquil spot has suffered from over-tourism in recent years, with party-goers flocking to camp by the water. ‌ Local residents have voiced their concerns about antisocial behaviour, including violence and littering. ‌ Some visitors have even brought along generators, gazebos and a flatbed truck equipped with its own fresh water supply for camping and outdoor enjoyment. However, the constant blaring of loud music throughout the night and drunken misbehaviour has resulted in locals being subjected to physical and verbal abuse, reports the Scottish Daily Express. ‌ Perth and Kinross Council have been accused of not doing enough to discourage troublemakers from wreaking havoc in the scenic area. Reports of nudity and drug use have also surfaced, with campers neglecting to clean up their rubbish after overnight stays. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "I have people wandering into my garden asking if they can park there, people coming in and asking if they can use my loo. We have people having raves, it's like a music festival. I'm not a shrinking violet. I like a drink and I like loud music, but it's intolerable and I don't feel safe." Rangers have increased patrols in the area, collecting discarded items such as soiled nappies and a hypodermic needle. The locale typically teems with visitors between October or whenever the sun makes an appearance. ‌ Ms Crichton criticised the council and police response, stating: "Some of the rangers have been doing the job since before I got there so they know the area well and they're very invested in it. Every time I make a complaint, I'm told there's no law being broken. I cannot accept that." Negative feedback has also appeared on the Loch Clunie Facebook page, including a recent post from a man who visited the loch with his 10 year old daughter. He penned: "It was like Skid Row. Drunks everywhere - one or two being quite aggressive. Rubbish everywhere. Maybe half a dozen cars abandoned with parking tickets on them. Stayed for five minutes and left." Strathtay Councillor Ian James described the situation as an "absolute nightmare" for local residents. He commented that they were "putting up with loud music and drunken behaviour. Although it's a beautiful area, it's just not a nice place to be when it's like that." ‌ He alleged that a friend of his had been stabbed after requesting people not to camp in his garden. He added: "If this was Perth city centre, we'd have the police turning up and everybody would be trying their best to stop it, but this is in the countryside so it's unseen by most." A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council has stated that the local authority is keen for both visitors and residents to enjoy areas such as Loch of Clunie in a "safe, responsible and courteous manner". The spokesperson further added: "Parking attendants patrol the clearways, issuing guidance and penalty notices as appropriate. "We fully recognise the community's ongoing concerns about repeated incidents of irresponsible camping near residential properties. Given the understandable feelings of vulnerability and anxiety this has caused, we have advised residents not to engage directly with visitors and to report any threatening behaviour to Police Scotland." A representative from Police Scotland said: "We understand the impact anti-social behaviour and disorder has on the local community, and we would like to thank locals who continue to bring these incidents to our attention. Officers continue to work with local partners to address any concerns in the area, and where criminality is established, those responsible will be dealt with appropriately."

He said: 'I've known him all his life and used to love him like a son, but he has a warped mind and a weird sexual drive. 'He's often spoken about Peter Sutcliffe. We thought he was joking. 'I don't think Kyle's murdered anyone, but I think he's carried out more sexual assaults. 'The risk of letting him go is too great. I don't think he can help himself. 'His catchphrases were 'vaping and raping' and 'use and abuse them'.' The fact that he used a crowbar on a girl shows he was getting dangerous... He will be a danger back on the streets Kernachan, of Lochgelly, Fife, was found guilty of using a crowbar on a woman in a horror attack at Silverknowes Beach, Edinburgh, between 2015 and 2016.
