7 Philadelphia Eagles on the roster bubble entering training camp

USA Today21-07-2025
With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Eagles who are squarely on the roster bubble.
The Eagles have a dominant roster, with ten players landing in the top ten rankings from ESPN's positional poll. Philadelphia has few holes on the roster, and even less opportunity for an under-the-radar or veteran player to steal a job or cause a surprise cut. In five days, they'll return to the NovaCare Complex entirely motivated after an offseason of slights and trash talk from looming opponents.
With the report date just five days away, we're looking at seven big-named Eagles who are squarely on the roster bubble.
RB AJ Dillon
Dillon, a 27-year-old running back, is returning to the field after missing the 2024 season due to a neck injury. The Eagles are hoping Dillon can replicate the success he had in Green Bay, where he amassed significant scrimmage yards between 2021 and 2023, but he's only under contract for $1,197,500.
WR Terrace Marshall
The former LSU star, still only 24, was once a second-round pick in 2021 but has had a disappointing NFL career. Marshall's best season came in 2022, when he had 28 catches for 490 yards and one score with the Panthers. Last season with the Raiders, Marshall had just three catches for 41 yards and offers intriguing athleticism as a long shot.
TE Harrison Bryant
Philadelphia has Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra as the top two tight ends, and Bryant will compete with Kylen Granson for a roster spot. Bryant finishes his 2024 campaign with nine receptions for 86 yards on 12 targets across 13 games with the Raiders, primarily providing depth at tight end behind All-Pro rookie Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer.
OL Kenyon Green
Acquired in a trade for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Green was the No. 15 overall pick out of Texas A&M back in 2022. Green missed all of 2023 with a shoulder injury, and before suffering another shoulder issue last October, he led all guards in pressures allowed (36).
He ranked third in quick pressures allowed (14), per NFL Next Gen Stats.
OLB Patrick Johnson
More of a pass rusher than run stopper, Johnson will compete with Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari for a roster spot.
CB Eli Ricks
Ricks was supposed to move up the Eagles' depth chart after a season spent watching and continuing to learn his craft. He'll compete with Adoree Jackson and Mac McWilliams for snaps.
DB Lewis Cine
The goal in adding Lewis Cine on January 8th was to give him a head start on the upcoming season. He's had some time in Vic Fangio's system. Now, he's expected to compete for a roster spot and hopefully live up to the 32nd overall selection the Minnesota Vikings spent on him in 2022.

Philadelphia Flyers fan survey: What do you think of Briere, Tocchet, Michkov and more?

It's been a newsworthy few months for the Philadelphia Flyers. John Tortorella was replaced by Rick Tocchet. Trevor Zegras was acquired from Anaheim. Porter Martone is now arguably the top prospect in the organization, while another goalie and depth center were acquired in free agency. We're also about to enter the third year of the Daniel Briere and Keith Jones era — and with summer here, it's a good time, in our opinion, to gauge fan sentiment in the form of a brief survey. Results and analysis will be presented in a future piece. Anyone having trouble viewing the survey also can use this link. (Photo of Matvei Michkov: Scott Taetsch / Getty Images) Loading…

Phillies' Generational Pitching Prospect Shockingly Mentioned As Trade Chip

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the better teams in baseball, but that doesn't mean they're perfect. In fact, Philadelphia has quite a few holes on its roster to be filled at the trade deadline. If the Phillies are going to chase any big trades in the coming days, they're going to need to cut ties with some blue-chip prospects. FanSided's Christopher Kline recently suggested the Phillies could use top pitching prospect Andrew Painter as a trade chip this week. Until now, it's seemed like Painter would be untouchable. FORT MYERS, FL- MARCH 01: Andrew Painter #76 of the Philadelphia Phillies pitches during a spring training game against the Minnesota Twins on March 1, 2023 at the Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida. FORT MYERS, FL- MARCH 01: Andrew Painter #76 of the Philadelphia Phillies pitches during a spring training game against the Minnesota Twins on March 1, 2023 at the Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida. Brace Hemmelgarn/"OK, this is a stretch. But we are talking about Dave Dombrowski, who made his name on big, bold moves that defied convention and threw caution to the wind," Kline wrote. "That isn't really his personality anymore, but the Phillies are running out of time with this core and pitching depth really isn't a problem, especially if Ranger Suárez lands the extension he very publicly wants. "Painter is the top prospect in Philly's farm system and No. 8 overall at MLB Pipeline. They aren't going to trade him for a random Joe in left field or a nice rental in the bullpen. But if there's a proper star that becomes available unexpectedly, it's in Dombrowski's nature to explore his options." It should be seen as very unlikely that the Phillies cut ties with Painter. The righty is one of the best prospects in the game, regardless of position, age, or team. But if Philadelphia believes in Mick Abel as a future piece of their rotation, there's a chance Painter isn't untouchable anymore. With the Phillies likely hunting trades for star outfielders like Jarren Duran, it's safe to imagine Painter's name coming up in trade discussions. Still, he's as close to untouchable as it gets in terms of prospects. More MLB: Yankees Rumors: New York Urged To Pursue Intra-Division Trade For Veteran Pitcher

Bryce Harper reportedly told Rob Manfred to 'get the f*** out of our clubhouse' if he wanted to talk salary cap

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper plays with a lot of passion. And after a reported tense run-in with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, it appears that Harper's passion for the game presents itself away from the field as well. Harper reportedly told Manfred to "get the f*** out of our clubhouse" during a contentious team meeting with the commissioner, per Jeff Passan of ESPN. Manfred routinely meets with all 30 MLB teams in an attempt to forge and improve relationships with players and clubs. That meeting reportedly took a turn when Manfred started talking about the "game's economics," per Passan. Harper stood up, walked toward the middle of the room, faced up to Manfred and said: "If you want to speak about that, you can get the f— out of our clubhouse." Manfred, sources said, responded that he was "not going to get the f— out of here," saying it was important to talk about threats to MLB's business and ways to grow the game. Manfred reportedly never used the term "salary cap," though the idea that the league would look to implement one is not farfetched. A salary cap has been at the center of a few MLB-MLBPA labor negotiations over the years. Baseball remains one of the only major sports leagues without a salary cap. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The Harper-Manfred situation didn't escalate further, per Passan. Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos stepped in to ask more questions, which seemed to get the meeting back on track. Harper and Manfred reportedly shook hands after the meeting, but Harper did not answer phone calls from Manfred after the fact, per Passan. On Monday, Harper told reporters: 'I've always been very vocal [in labor discussions], just not in a way that people can see." Castellanos confirmed to ESPN the contentious exchange between Harper and Manfred. "It was pretty intense, definitely passionate," Castellanos told ESPN. "Both of 'em, the commissioner giving it back to Bryce and Bryce giving it back to the commissioner. That's Harp. He's been doing this since he was 15 years old. It's just another day. I wasn't surprised." Castellanos also discussed why the players were frustrated by Manfred's language and approach. Per Castellanos, Manfred talked about a possible lockout once the current collective-bargaining agreement expires after the 2026 MLB season. Castellanos took issue with that term being thrown around before the CBA expires, per ESPN. "That's nothing to throw around. That's the same thing as me saying in a marriage, 'I think divorce is a possibility. It's probably going to happen.' You don't just say those things." While there's more than a year before the CBA expires, both sides appear ready for another contentious round of negotiations. Manfred reportedly brought up the word "lockout," but Castellanos took a different view of the situation, saying any work stoppage is bad for the game. "Nobody wants a work stoppage in baseball," he continued. "Not the players, not the league." Avoiding a work stoppage ahead of the 2027 MLB season could be difficult. Negotiations were not smooth the last time the CBA expired, leading to a 99-day lockout in the winter of 2021-22. Both sides eventually agreed to a five-year deal, but the MLB season started late due to the extended negotiations. In March, MLBPA director Tony Clark said the players expect to be locked out once the current CBA ends. If the owners take that step and then try to introduce a salary cap ahead of 2027, it could be a significant issue for the players. Given his reported reaction to Manfred, Harper will almost certainly be a major voice within the union if that's the path the owners take.
