SAD vs Damdami Taksal: Panthic crisis rooted in contest for control of Sikh institutions and religious affairs

Jalandhar: The ongoing Panthic crisis — in which Akal Takht and Takht Patna Sahib-based clergy appear in conflict with each other, and Damdami Taksal and a few Nihang groups have opposed Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj's June 6 address — seems to be a continuation of events that have taken place in recent past, but it is rooted in a contest for control over Sikh institutions and religious affairs — one that is being fought with Shiromani Akali Dal (
SAD
) on one side and Damdami Taksal, along with other traditional groups, on the other.
As the Gurdwara Reform Movement, which had roots in the Singh Sabha movement, led to the formation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and SAD in 1920, they remained closely intertwined and at the centre of Sikh religio-political affairs. Sikh sampardas (traditional groups), including the taksal and Nihangs, remained at the margins, with limited roles.
Taksal rose to prominence with Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as its head.
After Operation Bluestar, it became the most influential organisation after SGPC and took an independent political line, which several times was at variance with mainstream Akalis. It remained a rallying point for Sikh groups, especially the radicals, and a parallel centre. The present taksal chief, Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, has also headed Sant Samaj.
Facing pressure from Sikh groups of different hues, the Badals forged an alliance with the taksal, including the Sant Samaj.
In the 2011 SGPC elections, they contested as allies, with the taksal getting 20 seats. "Earlier, the taksal and other sampardas would have no influence in decision making, even as several granthis were coming from a taksal background and a few of them rose to prominence. But after Sant Samaj, led by the taksal chief, openly aligned with SAD, they started having major influence in decision making," former SGPC secretary Kulwant Singh Randhawa, who also authored two books on the Sikh body and Sikh affairs, told TOI in Nov last year.
When SAD openly and repeatedly said RSS and BJP were taking control of Sikh institutions outside Punjab and were also behind attempts to dislodge Sukhbir Singh Badal from the leadership of SAD, the taksal announced support for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in the Maharashtra assembly elections in Nov.
Bitterness had been brewing between SAD and the taksal.
Now, the Akali Dal crisis has unfolded in a way that traditional groups, especially the taksal, have completely fallen out with the political party.
Things have reached a point where Baba Dhumma led a dharna outside the SGPC office on March 28, during the meeting of its general house, against the unceremonious sacking of takht jathedars. In the latest stand-off, when taksal and Nihang groups are citing 'maryada' issues about the appointment of the new acting jathedar and arguing that his appointment has not been approved by the larger community, their grievance is also about their diminished role in SGPC's decision making.
Over the past decade, Akali Dal weakened, despite controlling SGPC and by implication Akal Takht. However, the traditional groups gained influence and became a religious establishment in their own right. The phase of alliance seems to be over and they now appear to vying for control of religious institutions.

In compliance with the order received from the Five Singh Sahibaan at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and with the grace of Guru Sahib Ji, after completing the assigned service, I went to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, offered Ardaas, and submitted a report regarding the completed service, Bains said. For the cleaning and improvement of the roads leading to Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, Gurdwara Kotha Sahib Patshahi Nauvin, and Gurdwara Baba Bakala Sahib, I pledge to contribute Rs 20 lakh from my discretionary funds and, as a personal offering, one month's salary, he said. Bains also said he would make every possible effort, personally and through the government for beautification works around other sites linked to Guru Tegh Bahadur. As a humble Sikh, I request forgiveness for mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly in the past, and seek blessings to serve religion, the community, the nation, Punjab and society to the greatest extent in the future, he said. The Sikh clergy summoned Bains for organising entertainment performances, involving dance and music, at a programme held in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on July 24 to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth of the ten Sikh Gurus. The Punjab Language Department organised the event, held at Tagore Hall in Srinagar. At the meeting held at the Akal Takht secretariat, Bains apologised for the Srinagar event, which was seen as a deep affront to Sikh sentiments. The Sikh clergy asked him to immediately visit Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, the birthplace of Guru Tegh Bahadur, in Amritsar, to inspect and ensure repairs and cleanliness on the approach roads and nearby streets. This is the first time that the Akal Takht mandated infrastructure development as part of a religious sentence.

In new FB post, SAD projects Sukhbir as a ‘lone hawk' surrounded by ‘hunters'
1 2 Chandigarh: With its president Sukhbir Singh Badal facing another litmus test on Panthic turf after the formation of a rival faction that calls itself the 'real' Akali Dal, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday put out a post on its official Facebook handle. The post took a dig at Badal's political opponents, and sought to project him as a 'ikkala baaj' (lone hawk), after whom there were 'several hunters'. The post showed Badal standing with folded hands, a hawk in the background, and surrounded by his political opponents in a rotating circle. It included photos of leaders of the rival faction, Congress, and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), but none of the BJP, the ex-ally of the SAD. In the backdrop of the 46-second long clip, played the lines of 'a vaar' (a poetic style of singing) sung some years ago by a 'dhadhi jatha' to eulogise Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, which go like 'Eh baaz ikkala hai, isde magar ne bahut shikaari' (He is a lone hawk after whom there are many hunters). The circle surrounding Badal in the post had photos of Giani Harpreet Singh, who was elected as president of the rival Akali faction on Monday, and members of the five-member panel which carried out the membership drive for the new faction 'as per directions of the Akal Takht'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The members of the panel whose photos were included are Manpreet Singh Ayali, Iqbal Singh Jhundan, Gurpartap Singh Wadala, and Santa Singh Umedpur. It also had photos of other prominent Akali leaders Prem Singh Chandumajra, Surjit Singh Rakhra, Jagir Kaur, and Parminder Singh Dhindsa, whom the SAD calls 'rebels'. The circle surrounding Badal also had photos of Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann and Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president Aman Arora. From Congress, it had photos of Jalandhar MP and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Ludhiana MP and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, and Qadian legislator and Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha Partap Singh Bajwa. Incidentally, no leader of the BJP figured in the post. Badal and SAD leadership have been accusing the Centre of 'hatching a plan' along with the rival group to finish off the SAD leadership. A dhadhi jatha group led by Kulwinder Singh MA Ladhubhana claims to have penned the lyrics of the song, which was produced by music composer Kam Lohgarh. "I wrote the lyrics in 2015 or 2016. Kam Lohgarh gave music to it, and it became very famous," Ladhubhana said over the phone. "This is basically a poem dedicated to Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. I was inspired to write it after listening to his interview where he was questioned that leaders of different political parties had their own agenda, to which he replied that he would alone bat for Panth and Guru Granth. This poem was inspired by that answer. There was a photo of him with a hawk, and I penned down the poem. We are also coming up with its part two in November," Ladhubhana said.
