Justin Rose shows his true character after Rory McIlroy admitted his 'selfish' feelings about Brit

Justin Rose won the St Jude Championship in dramatic fashion on Sunday, and Rory McIlroy has previously made an admission about the English golfer
Justin Rose has revealed the mentality that helped him secure the St Jude Championship on Sunday. The 45-year-old set a new record by becoming the oldest European to claim a win on the PGA Tour.

Throughout the tournament, Tommy Fleetwood looked set to claim the first PGA title of his career in Memphis. Despite leading by two strokes with three holes remaining, Fleetwood's par on the 16th allowed his rivals to gain ground, eventually leading to a tie between Rose and US Open champion J.J. Spaun on 16-under-par.

The English golfer emerged victorious from their three-hole playoff to secure the 12th PGA win of his career. Rose, who finished runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the Masters in April, explained how his meticulous approach had helped him stay consistent and pick up the win at the St Jude Championship.

'I've always known I've had that," Rose said during his press conference. "Like I get nervous for the best of them, you know, like I feel nervous at times, but I know that when it matters, I still got it.
'I kind of get, I feel better and better and better as it gets more and more important. So that's good to know. It's the hard stuff to practice. It's the hard stuff to teach. Nice to know that that hasn't left me at this ripe old age.
"But listen, I don't want to keep saying that because I'm actually, I feel like I'm moving well. The body's feeling good. I'm training well.
'Yeah, I feel like there could be, you know, listen, it could be a good run of golf still. So I can't let the age kind of become too much of the story."
Rose received many plaudits for his reaction to McIlroy's playoff victory at the Masters as the Northern Irishman finally completed his career Grand Slam. When asked about Rose, McIlroy was full of praise for his five-time Ryder Cup team-mate.

"He's [Rose] a great champion," McIlroy said. "He has displayed so much grace throughout his career. You know, selfishly, I was happy that it was another Euro in the playoff. We're on a good run at the minute. We're [in a] Ryder Cup year and all that.
"He's had a phenomenal record around here, and I feel for him a little bit because he's been so close. He's a good friend, and hopefully, he has a few more opportunities."

Rose won the 2013 US Open but has subsequently been runner-up or tied for second at five major championships. McIlroy knows him well from their time on Team Europe, contributing to four Ryder Cup victories together, and they will be on the same side again later this year.
The 45-year-old demonstrated a level of calmness during his playoff against Spaun. Rose was delighted with how he ended the final day to clinch the St Jude Championship, as he saw his practice paying off.
'I hit a couple good putts in regulation and in the first playoff hole as well,' he said. 'Obviously J.J. dropped a bomb on me, I topped him. It was a lot of fun today.
'That's why I practice. That's why I play. I've been saying for some time now, obviously Augusta, when I bring my best, I know I'm good enough to play and to compete, and to now win against the best players in the world. Very gratifying day for me and a lot of hard work coming to fruition.'

Tommy Fleetwood's optimism is delusional — time to admit there's a problem

The good thing about professional sport when it all goes wrong is that there is always next week. The bad thing for Tommy Fleetwood is that next week is in the United States again. The FedEx Cup play-off circus moves on to Caves Valley in Maryland and the BMW Championship, with Fleetwood ruminating on another missed opportunity to break his American duck. Sunday evening's late unravelling in Memphis, following on from the Travelers Championship collapse in June, revealed a player stuck in a loop of agonising near-misses on the PGA Tour. Worryingly for Fleetwood, the storyline of a player who just cannot win in America is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. He looked like someone fearing the worst when the tournament reached crunch time. As Justin Rose ran towards the fire over the closing holes to take the FedEx St Jude Championship to a play-off against US Open champion JJ Spaun — which he won at the third extra hole — Fleetwood retreated.

A former Hearts striker is the subject of intense interest from clubs in Scotland and England as the summer transfer window enters its final three weeks. The Daily Record have reported St Johnstone have rejected an offer from English League One club Peterborough United for former Hearts forward Mackenzie Kirk. The Northern Ireland youth international is the son of former Hearts and Dunfermline Athletic frontman Andy Kirk and made just a solitary senior appearance during his time at Tynecastle despite becoming a regular goalscorer in the Hearts B setup. After scoring 14 goals in 49 appearances during his first season at McDiarmid Park, Kirk has reportedly attracting major interest from elsewhere and it now appears Peterborough have been unsuccessful with an opening offer for the 21-year-old frontman. The report claims the Posh are not the only club to have submitted a bid for Kirk this summer after they stated Bristol Rovers and a current Premiership club both had bids rejected earlier in the close-season. Meanwhile, a separate article from The Courier has claimed the Saints are 'unlikely' to allow Kirk to join second tier rivals Dunfermline but also states two Premiership clubs have lodged an interest in his services following the rejected offers from Bristol Rovers and Peterborough. Dons boss admits to 'difficult' transfer window Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin. | SNS Group It has been a challenging start to the Premiership season for Aberdeen after Jimmy Thelin's side suffered back-to-back 2-0 defeats against Hearts and Celtic in their opening two games of the league campaign. That comes on the back of what has been a hectic summer transfer window so far as the Dons have completed deals for the likes of Portsmouth striker Kusini Yengi, Western Sydney winger Nicolas Milanovic and Tottenham Hotspur defender Alfie Dorrington. Further additions are being worked on ahead of the final three weeks of the window and Thelin has stressed he is not frustrated by the transfer activity and will remain hard at work to further boost his squad. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He told BBC Sport: "Everybody is so aligned with what we want to do. It has to be the right player, not just a player, and we know what we are trying to do. We have to find the profile and how we build the squad. "If you work in this business, it is not frustration. You know it is a difficult market, everybody is trying to do the best we can do and we are trying to nail the things we want to happen. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, then you move on and you always have an optimistic mindset and try to do the best you can do. I think in the window, you can't control exactly what happens, but we have a lot of people who are working hard to always try to improve the squad." Rangers strike deal with THREE other SPFL clubs for ‘loan cooperation agreements'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS have agreed deals with three other SPFL clubs to send players on loan this season, according to a report. We broke the news back in June that five top Premiership sides were looking into establishing partnerships with teams further down the pyramid. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 1 Stark's Park, home of Raith Rovers Credit: PA:Press Association The SFA backed the initiative, hoping it would lead to an increase in young homegrown players playing first team football. Celtic announced a partnership with Ayr United earlier this month, after talks with fellow Scottish Championship side Queen's Park broke down. Rangers have now reached agreements with Raith Rovers, Alloa Athletic and Stirling Albion for similar arrangements, reports the Rangers Review. The scheme will allow Gers to send up to three of their young stars to each of the clubs. It gives the Ibrox club options to send players to the Championship with Raith or to League One with Alloa and League Two with Stirling. Aberdeen, Dundee United and Hearts also engaged in discussions with lower-league counterparts. The Dons will team up with Kelty Hearts and Elgin City for loans and the Jambos will cooperate with St Johnstone for the next year. An SFA report last year first mentioned the introduction of a so-called Cooperation System and other possible introductions including incentives for playing young Scots in cup competitions and the implementation of a scholarship system to protect against our top talents being snapped up by English clubs before they turn 18. SFA Chief Football Officer Andy Gould spoke to The Herald on the impact of the Cooperation System: 'This can definitely make a difference to Scotland teams of the future 'It's an opportunity for clubs to use a system that enhances their chances of getting players into their first team. Rangers boss Russell Martin admits there will be 'a bit of pain' as he reacts to Dundee draw at Ibrox 'At the top end of the game it gives them a greater opportunity of selling those players and, down the line, there is an opportunity for the national team to get the benefit of that. 'That's not necessarily going to happen overnight, it does take a period of time. 'How many years is difficult to predict, but we need to find a competitive system which gives us a competitive edge over others and at the minute we don't have that.'
