Madhya Pradesh: Congress to spread awareness on ‘vote chori'
The opposition party also announced to organise torch processions to 'save democracy' on the night of August 14. Rallies will be taken out at all district headquarters beginning August 22.
Bhopal, Aug 13 (PTI) The Congress will launch rallies in Madhya Pradesh to alert people about 'vote chori' and 'rigging' of voters' lists, party leaders said on Wednesday.
The Election Commission had directed Gandhi to give a written declaration on his claims.
'We will take the campaign against vote theft to every booth and house across Madhya Pradesh and make people aware about vote theft,' state Congress in-charge Harish Chaudhary told reporters.
He said 'vote theft' is not only a violation of the law, but also an attack on democracy and the Constitution.
Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Umang Singhar, said the torch processions will be taken out on the night of August 14. 'Vote Chor-Gaddi Chhod' rallies will be organised from August 22 to September 7.
Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha said the people of the country want to know whether the Election Commission stands with the Constitution and democracy or favours a political party.
'The work of the Election Commission is to ensure public convenience, not to create difficulties for the citizens,' he said.
State Congress president Jeetu Patwari said Rahul Gandhi raised the 'vote fraud' issue to save the rights of people and democracy, not for political gains.
'Why is the Election Commission avoiding releasing digital voters' lists? The EC should answer queries posed to it by Gandhi, but instead, BJP leaders are coming forward to defend the poll body,' he added.
The BJP has rejected the allegations raised by Congress leaders.
BJP leader and MP minister Vishwas Sarang said the Congress, which ruled the country for a long time, has consistently defamed democracy and Constitutional institutions.
'By using words like vote theft, Rahul Gandhi is insulting democracy,' he said.
Sarang alleged that the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had conspired to defeat Babasaheb Ambedkar in the 1952 elections.
'74,433 votes were rejected in that election, leading to Ambedkar's defeat by 14,561 votes. This trend continued in the 1957 elections, during and after the Emergency. Congress always tried to misuse democracy,' he alleged. PTI MAS NSK

Centre notifies appointment of Aarti Sathe as HC judge
MUMBAI: The central government on Wednesday notified the appointment of advocate Aarti Sathe, former spokesperson of the Maharashtra BJP, and two others, as judges of the Bombay High Court. Centre notifies appointment of Aarti Sathe as HC judge 'In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Shri Ajit Bhagwanrao Kadethankar, (ii) Shri Sushil Manohar Ghodeswar and (iii) Ms Aarti Arun Sathe, to be Additional Judges of the Bombay High Court, in that order of seniority, for a period of two years, with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices,' the notification stated. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice (Appointments Division) issued the notification on Wednesday, a fortnight after the Supreme Court Collegium on July 28 recommended Sathe's appointment, along with the other two judges. Following this, opposition leaders in Maharashtra raised objections to Sathe's appointment, calling her elevation to the judiciary 'the gravest blow to democracy'. The appointment of three new judges has taken the strength of the high court to 69, against a sanctioned strength of 94. 'The appointment of a political figure raises doubts about the entire process of delivery of justice. It also undermines the principle of separation of power ensured by the Constitution,' NCP (SP) legislator Rohit Pawar had said, and demanded that the decision be reconsidered. Sathe said she had already resigned from the party, while the Maharashtra BJP pointed out that such an appointment had taken place during the Congress regime too. 'I had resigned from all political posts long before this. So that settles it. I don't want to respond to anything else,' said Sathe. The Congress's state unit president Harshwardhan Sapkal said that if someone who held an active position in a political party was appointed as a judge, her judgments could not be impartial. 'Democracy and the Constitution have been systematically sidelined in the country since 2014,' said Sapkal. 'All autonomous institutions are operating under government directives, even the Election Commission of India. But the most serious and worrying development is within the judiciary itself.' Responding to the controversy, the BJP said Sathe had resigned as party spokesperson from the post on January 6 last year, and had posted her resignation letter on social media. Sathe's legal practice has largely been in the field of direct and indirect taxes. She is an alumna of Government Law College, Mumbai. Her father, Arun P Sathe, is a BJP worker with an RSS background. He was BJP in-charge of the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh and was also associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena. Arun Sathe had unsuccessfully fought the Lok Sabha election as a BJP candidate in 1989, from Mumbai North-West constituency, against the Congress's Sunil Dutt. He is the elder brother of former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. A similar controversy took place when the central government appointed Arun Sathe to the board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in August 2015.

Plea about ‘threat' to Rahul Gandhi filed without his consent, to be withdrawn: lawyer
Just hours after a plea was submitted in a Pune court citing a possible threat to Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi from those following the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, his lawyer clarified that it had been filed without Gandhi's approval, and would be withdrawn. The Pune court has already granted bail to Gandhi in the defamation case, and the trial is yet to start. (HT FILE) Advocate Milind Pawar, who represents Gandhi in a defamation case filed by Savarkar's grand-nephew Satyaki Savarkar, said on Wednesday evening that a fresh application for withdrawal would be moved before Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Amol Shinde on Thursday. Pawar said that the earlier submission, made during the regular hearing in the afternoon and known in court procedure as a 'Pursis', had been drafted without prior discussion with Gandhi. 'The contents of the 'pursis' were drafted by me without consulting my client Shri Rahul Gandhi. My client has taken strong exception to the filing, and expressed disagreement with its contents,' the lawyer said in a press statement issued late in the evening. The application filed before magistrate Shinde had claimed that Satyaki Savarkar had acknowledged being maternally related to Nathuram Godse and Gopal Godse, both principal accused in Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. It also referred to Rahul Gandhi's role as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, recent press conferences alleging electoral malpractice by the Election Commission of India, and a heated parliamentary exchange between Gandhi and the Prime Minister on the subject of Hindutva. Against this backdrop, the application indicated that individuals connected with Savarkar's ideology or lineage might bear hostility towards Gandhi, creating a 'reasonable apprehension' of harm, wrongful implication, or other targeting. 'In light of the documented history of violent and anti-constitutional tendencies linked to the complainant's lineage, and considering the prevailing political climate, there exists a clear, reasonable, and substantial apprehension that Rahul Gandhi may face harm, wrongful implication, or other forms of targeting by persons subscribing to the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar,' the application stated. The Pune court has already granted bail to Gandhi in the defamation matter, and the trial is yet to start. The case stems from Satyaki Savarkar's allegation that Gandhi, in a March 2023 speech in London, falsely attributed to VD Savarkar an account in which he claimed to have assaulted a Muslim man and felt pleased about it. Calling the plea a delaying tactic, Satyaki Savarkar's counsel, advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, questioned why it had been filed in the first place. 'This is nothing but an attempt to stall proceedings by making frivolous claims,' he said.

Haryana: ‘No cure for lies': Saini slams Rahul over voter list allegations
Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday hit back at Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his allegations of irregularities in voter list preparations, saying there was 'no cure for lies' and accusing the Congress of having run out of real issues. Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini during the Tiranga Yatra in Kurukshetra on Wednesday. (Photo: X) Speaking to reporters after leading a Tiranga Yatra in Kurukshetra, Saini dismissed the Congress's repeated claims about faulty electronic voting machines (EVMs). 'Congress won 10 seats in Haryana by margins ranging from 100 to 1,000 votes. If the EVMs were faulty, how did they win these seats?' he asked. Cabinet ministers Krishan Lal Panwar and Shyam Singh Rana were also present. Saini urged the Congress not to mislead the public and remarked that party leaders should 'explain the truth to Rahul Gandhi and get him treated.' He further said that despite campaigning under the banner of the Constitution, the INDIA bloc was rejected by voters, who chose Narendra Modi as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term. 'In Haryana too, BJP has formed the government for the third time in a row,' he added. According to the CM, Congress's frustration stems from the BJP's development work and welfare measures such as Ayushman health cards, toilets in every home, ration distribution, and free gas cylinders under the Ujjwala Yojana. 'The party ruled for 55 years, but today it cannot digest the BJP's efforts to uplift the poor,' Saini said. Prajapati community land rights Earlier in the day, Saini chaired a state-level programme in Kurukshetra to distribute land entitlement certificates to families from the Prajapati community. The event was held simultaneously in all 22 districts, benefiting around 1,00,000 families across 1,700 villages. The certificates, issued under the Gram Shamlat Bhumi Niyamwali, 1964, grant the community collective rights to excavate soil, providing legal authority to continue their traditional craft without hindrance. Officials said this will enable artisans to work closer to home, modernise their methods, and enhance product quality to meet market demand. Saini urged the community to integrate traditional skills with new technology and take advantage of government schemes to boost both income and craftsmanship. The announcement fulfilled a promise he made during the Daksh Prajapati Jayanti celebrations in Bhiwani on July 13. Khattar takes part in Tiranga Yatra in Yamunanagar Union power minister and former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday participated in the 'Tiranga Yatra' here, along with party workers and students of the Maharshi Dayanand University. He also urged the people to stay away from drugs and make their families drug-free. Addressing the gathering at MDU, Khattar appraised the students and teachers about the values, cultures and social concerns of importance in life. He called upon the youths to engage in social responsibilities. Speaking on the National Education Policy-2020, the former Haryana chief minister said that special emphasis has been given on nationalism, practical knowledge and social responsibility in the new education policy. He praised university employees and vice-chancellor Rajbir Singh for taking an initiative to work for a drug -free society.
