NMC polls set in motion as Maha orders redrawing of ward boundaries
Nagpur: After a three-year delay, Maharashtra govt on Monday issued a formal order initiating the ward formation process for elections to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The order, issued by the urban development department, empowers the NMC commissioner to begin redrawing ward boundaries based on the 2011 census, adhering to population norms and social factors.
This development follows Supreme Court's May 6 directive, instructing completion of the electoral process to local self-govt bodies within four months. With Tuesday's order, the govt set the stage for resuming democratic processes in major civic bodies, including Nagpur, which was under administrative rule after the previous general body was dissolved.
In its last term, NMC had 151 corporators representing 38 prabhags (wards), with most electing four members each, except for one prabhag, which elected three.
BJP held an overwhelming majority with 108 corporators, followed by Congress (29), BSP (10), Shiv Sena (2), NCP (1), and an independent. Also, five members were nominated.
The last general body was dissolved in March 2022, since then NMC is being ruled by an administrator. BJP ruled the civic body for three consecutive terms. As per the order, all A, B, and C class municipal corporations must now begin the ward formation process under the multi-member ward system.

As Nagpur city falls under category A, the Nagpur civic commissioner must draw the new ward boundaries in consultation with the State Election Commission, factoring in geographical continuity, SC/ST representation, access to civic amenities, and avoiding disruption of settlements.
The process will involve multiple stages, including public hearings on objections and suggestions, with the final ward maps to be published only after approval by the Election Commission.
Each ward will preferably elect four corporators, though three or five-member wards are allowed in exceptional cases. Ward boundaries must follow natural dividers like roads or rivers and be drawn on Google Earth with supporting population data from census block maps.
Officials have been instructed to avoid mistakes of previous elections, which were marred by legal disputes over faulty demarcations.
While the exact number of corporators and wards will be finalised later, this govt order marks a crucial first step towards restoring elected representation in Nagpur.
The move is expected to galvanise political parties, especially BJP and Congress, ahead of the high-stakes municipal polls.
Though no order has yet been issued for zilla parishad elections, the urban development department has released a separate directive to initiate the election process to municipal councils and nagar panchayats across Maharashtra. In Nagpur district, this will cover elections to 14 municipal councils — Butibori, Kalmeshwar, Kamptee, Kanhan Pipari, Katol, Khapa, Mohpa, Mowad, Narkhed, Ramtek, Saoner, Umred, Wadi, and Wanadongari.
Additionally, polls will be held for eight nagar panchayats — Bhiwapur, Hingna, Kuhi, Mahadula, Mouda, Parseoni, Godhani, and Besa-Pipla. This order signals a broader resumption of democratic processes at the grassroots across both urban and semi-urban local bodies.

Maharashtra: Amid MNS-Sena (UBT) alliance buzz, CM Fadnavis meets Raj Thackeray
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and MNS head Raj Thackeray met at a hotel in Mumbai on Thursday morning. The meeting comes amid speculation over rapprochement between Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his politically estranged cousin Raj Thackeray, who heads the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Senior BJP leader Fadnavis and Raj Thackeray met at a five-star hotel in Bandra area here in the morning, sources confirmed but declined to elaborate. When contacted, BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said the two leaders are good friends and may have met to discuss development issues related to the state. The Maharashtra government this week set in motion the process of holding the local body polls by issuing orders for ward delimitation for 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai. There has been speculation about a possible reconciliation between the Thackeray brothers ahead of the polls. The estranged Thackeray cousins sparked the buzz with their recent statements indicating they could ignore "trivial issues" and join hands nearly two decades after a bitter parting of ways. While Raj Thackeray has said uniting in the interest of "Marathi manoos" (Marathi-speaking people) is not difficult, Uddhav has insisted he is ready to put aside trivial fights, provided those working against Maharashtra's interests are not entertained. Raj Thackeray extended support to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, but his party contested the state assembly polls in November last year on its own.

ED searches on Cong MP, MLAs ‘conspiracy' to divide party: Kharge
Kalaburagi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday termed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) searches against a party MP and three MLAs in the state, as a 'conspiracy' to divide the party in Karnataka. Without taking the name of the ruling BJP at the Centre, he claimed that the grand old party was being targeted, aimed at creating difference within the party, to reap benefits out of it, but they wouldn't be successful in their attempts as all Congress legislators are united. 'I don't know the details. I just saw it on TV. Naturally, if the ED has done it, they have been angry with the Congress party since the beginning. If they are targeting the Congress MLAs, there seems to be a conspiracy to divide our party,' Kharge said. Speaking to reporters here, he said if they harass them by bringing up something now that is said to have happened during the election, it is not right. 'The matter should have been looked into during the election, but after one year, one-and-half year, if they are taking it up now, it seems to be an attempt to divide the party legislators here. Let's see how the ED takes the case. I will get information from the CM over the phone and see what needs to be done,' he added. The ED on Wednesday conducted searches against Congress Ballari MP E Tukaram and three MLAs of the party as part of a money laundering investigation into the alleged Valmiki scam-linked money laundering case, official sources said. They said five premises in Ballari and three in Bengaluru city are being searched under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). These include houses belonging to Tukaram and MLAs Nara Bharath Reddy (Bellary city), J N Ganesh (Kampli) and N T Srinivas (Kudligi). To a question about an allegation by the ED that the corporation's money was misused, Kharge said, 'They may say so. It is a matter left to ED. I will not interfere. Such inquiries happen. During elections, crores of rupees are seized. Where is it? To whom does it belong? So far, things haven't come out. Money was seized from all parties then. Where is that money?' Noting that everyone knows who spends how much during elections, while indicating to the BJP, he said, 'They especially target one party (Congress) because, if they trouble this party naturally, there will be differences within, and they feel that it will benefit them. But it is impossible. Despite all their harassment, all our MLAs are united, and this is nothing new in Karnataka...I don't want to comment more until the inquiry is completed,' he added. Sources said the searches are being conducted in order to gather evidence on the allegation that funds siphoned off from the accounts of the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki ST Development Corporation (KMVSTDC) were used for election expenses -- to distribute cash to voters and Congress workers of the Ballari seat during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Not a mad man, I don't even drink Royal Challenge
New Delhi: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, on Thursday, refuted the rumours of him buying the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise, saying that he is not a mad man. Speaking to ANI, Shivakumar said that he had offers to be part of the management, but he doesn't have time for this.'I am not a mad man. I'm just a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association from my younger days, that's all. I don't have time, though I had offers to be part of the management... Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge,' the Karnataka Dy CM said. On June 4, the stampede that occurred during celebrations outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations claimed 11 lives. Following the Bengaluru stampede, the Karnataka Government on June 5 suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident. Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah dismissed the BJP's demand for his resignation over the Bengaluru stampede, accusing the party of 'doing politics in everything. 'Chief Minister Siddaramaiah questioned why the BJP had not demanded the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath when a stampede occurred during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj earlier this year.'40-50 people died in a stampede at Kumbh Mela. Did they demand the chief minister's resignation then? A bridge collapsed on the day of the inauguration, and 140 people died. Did they demand the Prime Minister's resignation then?' Siddaramaiah asked while talking to reporters here.
