DNA of 32 Air India crash victims identified, bodies handed over to 14 families

Three days after an Air India Boeing plane en route to London from Ahmedabad crashed five minutes after take-off, authorities have identified the DNA of 32 out of 270 victims and have handed over the bodies to 14 families.Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the victims whose DNA was matched at around 11:10 am, and his body was handed over to his family at 1 am.advertisementMany of the victims that have been identified so far belong from Gujarat and Rajasthan, reported news agency PTI. The need to match victims' DNA arose after many bodies were charred beyond recognition in Thursday's crash.
"Thirty two DNA samples have matched till now, and 14 bodies have already been handed over to the respective families. These deceased were from Udaipur, Vadodara, Kheda, Mehsana, Arvalli, Ahmedabad and Botad districts," Additional Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Dr. Rajneesh Patel said, as reported by news agency PTI.As many as 230 teams were formed to coordinate with the victims' families, officials earlier said.The victims included 241 of the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound flight. The body of Anju Sharma, a resident of the Samta area, was also brought to the city on Sunday and final rites were performed. "It's a difficult moment for the victims of all the families as they couldn't even see their loved ones for one last time," said a family member. The Vadodara district administration said that they have deployed 21 liaison officers and 22 doctors to coordinate with the victims' family members and facilitate the final rites. Four officials were sent to Ahmedabad civil hospital to coordinate with the family members of the victims who have reached there to receive the mortal remains.

Trichy: On World Father's Day on Sunday, a 78-year-old man was arrested on charges of murdering his 55-year-old son at their house near Manapparai in Trichy district. Police said K Kandasamy, a farmer from A Kalingapatti near Manapparai, killed his son K Annadurai as he was not taking proper care of him. Recently, Kandasamy passed on his properties to his children, and he and his wife Ponnammal were under the support of their elder son Annadurai. Police said Kandasamy was allegedly not given food properly. Meanwhile on Saturday night, Kandasamy hacked Annadurai with a machete while he was sleeping on a wooden cot at their house. The next morning, Ponnammal found her son in a pool of blood and raised the alarm. The Manapparai police arrived at the spot and shifted the body to the GH in the town for an autopsy. Out of these, 33 bodies have already been returned to their respective families. While four bodies were released yesterday, another 29 were handed over today as the identification process continues amid a challenging situation. Officials said that as soon as DNA reports confirm a match, families are being notified and the remains are released to them. Health officials added that ambulances with police escort vehicles are being arranged for safe transportation of the bodies to their homes, in an effort to support the bereaved families. Along with the bodies, families are being provided with essential documents, including death certificates and DNA reports, to ensure a smooth and respectful handover process. The state authorities confirmed that the funeral of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those who lost their lives in the crash, will be conducted with full state honours tomorrow, June 16. 'CM Bhupendra Patel informed Vijay Rupani's family about the DNA samples matching as soon as the information was received… Tomorrow, at 11.30 am, the family will receive Vijay Rupani's mortal remains from the Civil Hospital. The mortal remains will be taken to Rajkot by air and reach there at 2. The funeral will be carried out at 5 pm and the last rites will be completed at 6 pm with state honours," said Gujarat health minister Rushikesh Patel.
