I won Race Across The World but hid a secret struggle from the cameras
Race Across The World came to a tense conclusion earlier this week.
The BBC reality competition show, which started in 2019, sees five pairs of contestants undertake a cross-continental race - without smartphones, credit cards, the internet or air travel.
The fifth series saw the travellers take on an almost 9,000-mile route from the Great Wall Of China, through Nepal, to the southern tip of India, with a budget of just over £1,000 per person.
And its winners were mother and son duo Caroline and Tom Bridge, 61 and 21, who narrowly claimed victory - with sisters Elizabeth and Letitia only 19 minutes behind them.
The pair, who took home the £20,000 prize, have now spoken out about the secret battles their epic 51-day journey helped them overcome.

Caroline and Tom spoke extensively on the show about the mother claiming - and her son accepting - her identity beyond being a housewife and parent.
But she told Metro she had been facing another challenge behind the scenes too: 'We'd just downsized the house which I really struggled with.
'I didn't have a horse anymore and we had our dog put down.
'Tom was becoming more independent and I thought, "I don't know what life is going to offer me now".
'Luckily, Race Across The World came at the right time.'
She took the loss of her horse so hard because it has emerged since her time on the show that Caroline is a successful eventer.
The Race Across The World winner loves to take part in the equestrian event, which sees competitors take on dressage, cross-country and show jumping.
Just before appearing on the show, which was filmed at the end of last year, she won all three events in British Eventing's grassroots BE80 league.
And since finishing the BBC competition show, she got her horse back and made a successful return to the sport: 'I have a much more positive attitude now.
'I still spend a lot of time outside with my animals but I'm not as frightened of being lonely.'
In fact, her return to horse riding has been so effective and positive that she has already topped the British Eventing BE90 March/April OBP league.
Caroline told The Horse and Hound in May riding prepared her well for the TV show: 'Eventing has got a little bit of the challenge of Race Across the World because you have to be prepared, fit, determined and have an aim in mind...
'Horsey people are generally quite grounded and extremely tough.
'You can put up with being dirty and grubby and you just get on with it and that really helped because dignity goes out the window very, very quickly.
'You don't mind getting your hands dirty in both senses of the word.
'And I was quite fit, which was probably the biggest help for me in the long run.'
But some viewers of the BBC programme, upon discovering her sporting career, questioned why it was not mentioned during the series.
One said on discussion site Reddit: 'I'm not dismissing her feelings about being her role in life.
'But her whole "I'm just a stay-at-home mum who has never done anything in my life" attitude rubs a bit thin when you take her sporting career in to account.
'She's not just an amateur - she has been doing it for 25 years i.e. all the time she was running a house.'
Another added: 'I don't like how Caroline is making out she is just some poor housewife who has never had a life when actually, she is a very successful eventer.
'She is making out that she hasn't done anything for herself since getting married. This is simply not true.'
Someone else said: 'Caroline is successful in eventing which, to me, makes her sob story seem a little disingenuous and designed to counter their obvious privilege.
'They definitely have grown over the course of the series and become more likeable.
'I don't think the producers really needed to work as hard on it as they might have thought.'
But other commenters defended her: 'I think that's more of an age thing and your children getting older.
'My mum kept going on about having lost her purpose and confidence when I went to uni... even though she had a very successful career.
'She's just retired and is saying the same thing now she's not working.'
Another added: 'Oh for goodness' sake, it's the lowest level of eventing you could possibly do...
'She has a horse (not a crime, last time I looked) and she does a bit of very low entry-level eventing. As a hobby, not a profession...
'She's stayed home and looked after her children and husband. And now she is wanting to do a little bit for herself before it's too late.
'Have an adventure... what's wrong with that?'
And it clearly worked - as they signed the coveted check-in book, Caroline said, through tears: 'We must never doubt ourselves, ever, ever, ever again.'
Caroline has also since confessed how hard it has been to keep their win a secret from all their family and friends.
They had to lie and say they had been visiting Tom's godfather in Australia and doing some travelling around the country.
But both of them have never been there - leaving them quickly brushing off any family or friends who tried to ask anything more about it.
Months after their life-changing trip, they still have not received the prize money - and even with all that time, they remain not quite sure how they will spend it.
Caroline plans, sensibly, to put it in a premium bond until she decides - while Tom thinks he may well go to do more travelling.
In the meantime, Tom has set up a new business endeavour with a friend the pair met on their travels.
While in India, they stayed with a man named Mr Chhotaram and his family, who have a rug-making business.
But Tom and Caroline know they are not going to stop travelling any time soon - with a trip to Kazakhstan in the works
The mother and son had a go at it themselves, eventually buying and shipping their creation to the UK - and all Tom's friends have been admiring it.
And ever since their interest, Tom has been importing Mr Chhotaram's rugs to the UK, selling them on his behalf and sending the money back to him.
The business partners have imported ten so far, with a pop-up shop and a website both in the works.
And Tom and Caroline are not going to stop travelling any time soon - with a trip to Kazakhstan in the works.
She smiled: 'We're not going to do any research, just [fly] by the seat of our pants and just be impulsive, speak to locals and find out what's good to do.'
Race Across The World is available to watch on BBC Two and to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Dave Myers' widow warned star not to fall in love despite his 'generous heart'
Dave Myers, who with Si King was part of the Hairy Bikers, married Liliana Orzac in 2011 after the pair met in Romania when he was filming the famous series for the BBC Hairy Biker Dave Myers had "such a generous heart" and "so much love to give," his grieving widow has said. Liliana admitted she was "helpless" to fall in love with the TV chef after she met him when he was filming The Hairy Bikers ' Cookbook in Romania. However, she said she fought to "warned him (Dave) not to fall in love" with her because she felt they "were from different worlds". She was a single mum with two children, working long hours at a modest hotel in Maramures, Romania while Dave, then 47, was a popular face on TV, whose programme was about to attract millions of viewers. Yet, the chemistry was there and, within two years, Liliana moved to the UK to live with Dave. "I understood that he was a truly special person, full of warmth, wisdom and spark. I knew we were developing strong feelings for each other, but I warned him not to fall in love with me. There were too many obstacles stacked against us. We were from different worlds and I was a single mother with two children to think of: my son Sergiu, 16, and my daughter Iza, ten," Liliana said. Yet, the couple tied the knot in 2011 in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, in front of 150 guests. Marriage bliss was rocked, though, in 2022 when Dave was diagnosed with cancer. The popular TV presenter died in February 2024 with Si by his side. Liliana added: "We'd hold hands and cry, sometimes unable to move or talk, just despairing at the unfairness of it all. I knew so well the depth of Dave's pain: the desperation, the helplessness, the anger. "Desperation for the loss of the peace and safety we'd both worked so hard for and would never get back. Helplessness in the face of this invisible enemy we'd been told was going to conquer us, no matter what we did or tried. "Anger at the injustice of having his life cut short and for being dragged through all this pain, the hospital appointments and the invasive treatments, knowing there was no way out." The mum has a new book out, called Adapted from Dave And Me, in which the widow shares her journey from meeting Dave to his tragic demise. In it, she recalls how Dave fancied her in Romania - but she didn't realise. In her interview with the Daily Mail, Liliana said: "I kept my guard up and treated what we had as a friendship, but Dave exuded so much charm and happiness that I gradually realised how much had been lacking in my life. I'd never known anyone with so much vivacity, so much love to give and such a generous heart. "It was impossible not to like Dave Myers. And, so it turned out for me, impossible not to fall in love with him, either. Despite my warnings, both of us were helpless to it. So in 2007, I moved to the UK with my daughter. My son stayed behind to finish his exams and came a year later."

Bachelor curse strikes again as another winning couple split
The Bachelor curse strikes again as another winning couple have broken up. The winning couple of season 29 of The Bachelor, Grant Ellis and Juliana Pasquarosa, have called it quits. Nearly three months the season finale aired, the pair announced that they have decided to split and ended their engagement. 'This is one of the harder things I've had to write, but I want to share it honestly,' Ellis wrote on his Instagram Story as he shared the news. This comes after he made history on the franchise series and also received backlash, being dubbed the 'worst Bachelor ever,' for how he behaved in the finale episode. 'Juliana and I have decided to end our relationship,' he shared in his post announcing the end of their relationship. 'We both gave this our best and poured a lot of love into each other, but after a lot of deep conversations, we've come to the understanding that we're simply not the right fit long term.' He reassured fans that their connection was 'real' but explained that they decided to separate because they are 'not the right fit' for each other. He also wrote that they ended on good terms without 'negativity' nor 'resentment.' 'What we had was meaningful. The connection on the show was real, and so was the effort we made to continue once the cameras stopped rolling,' he wrote. 'There's no negativity here. No resentment. Just two people who care about each other and want the best for one another moving forward. I'll always be grateful for what we shared and for the growth that came with it.' He concluded his post and wrote: 'Thank you to everyone who supported us and believed in our journey. This chapter is closing, but we're both walking away with love and respect in our hearts.' Pasquarosa also shared the news in her own words on her Instagram Story. Alongside a photo of them on The Bachelor, Pasquarosa gushed about their time together. 'It's a gift to find someone who sees the world in a way that resonates with you, while also encouraging you to grow. I've been grateful to share that experience with Grant.' She then addressed the end of their engagement. 'Marriage is a commitment, and it's one we both still believe in deeply. 'After a lot of honest conversations and reflection, we've come to the decision that this chapter of our lives is meant to continue on separate paths,' she continued. 'We shared something meaningful, navigating a unique journey side by side, learning, growing, and showing up for each other the best we knew how. 'And while this isn't the ending we once imagined, it's one filled with mutual respect, care, and hope for what's ahead,' she added. She concluded: 'We're still cheering each other on, just from different places now. I'm beyond thankful for all the love and support you all have given us. Please be kind.' Just last month, Pasquarosa made an appearance on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast and spoke about wedding planning without any seeming indication that their relationship was in on the rocks. She said on the podcast that she was excited to start shopping for her dream wedding dress and spoke about how she wanted to get married in Italy. During the season finale in March 2025, many fans thought Grant would end up alone after spotting awkward body language during the Women Tell All Episode two weeks prior. However, during the finale he couldn't decide between the two women left - Juliana and Litia. Litia had said that Grant had been telling her all along she was the one he wanted - even kissing her a few times before he broke the news to her that he was sending her home and choosing Juliana. When Grant asked if she felt he had been misleading her, 'she said, 'The things you've said to me all along the way make this decision that you've made so much more devastating. For me, the switchup is crazy.' While Grant insisted, 'I didn't switch up,' he ultimately took responsibility for that adding it came down to the 'final day and I had to make a decision.' Juliana and Grant's breakup comes just days on the heels of another franchise spli t. Earlier this week, it was revealed that The Bachelorette star Jenn Tran, who appeared on season 21 of the series, had called it quits with Dancing with the Stars pro Sasha Farber.
