2025 Pacific Mini Games: Cook Islands flag bearers journey
The flag bearers leading this year's team are Brendon Heath and Alanna Smith.
"We're incredibly proud to have two of our most experienced and respected athletes named as flag bearers," said Robert Graham, President of the Cook Islands Volleyball Federation.
"Both Brendon and Alanna have contributed so much over the years and continue to lead by example. This is a proud moment for our volleyball family."
For Mr Heath, this mini games marks an emotional milestone.
Less than a fortnight ago he lost his mother, Suzanne Tungane Kainuku Heath, who peacefully passed away in Nelson after battling a long illness.
"Mum has been my biggest motivation to represent this country," he said. "She was the reason I moved to Rarotonga."
Born and raised in New Zealand, Mr Heath hadn't grown up closely connected to his Cook Islands roots.
"I came to reconnect. I planned to stay for a year and have been there 17 years now."

As captain of the men's beach volleyball team, Mr Heath steps into the games with a wealth of experience. He said this tournament is a tribute to his mother and a symbol of the legacy he hopes to leave for his three children, who continue to inspire him.
"It's a huge honour and a proud moment for myself and my family," he says. "I feel like I've had a life of sports my kids have never seen. I hope I make them proud."
For Alanna Smith, it's about caring for something bigger. Crowned Miss Cook Islands in 2017, she also represented the country at Miss World.
She's a familiar figure on the national stage, not just as a beauty queen, but as an accomplished athlete who has represented the Cook Islands in netball. Now she's returning to beach volleyball — her second international appearance in the sport, having previously played in 2011.

Beyond athletic pursuits, Ms Smith is the director of Te Ipukarea Society, a prominent environmental NGO advocating for projects around climate resilience, and raising awareness on issues like deep-sea mining.
For Smith, sport and environmental advocacy are interconnected.
"Sport and the environment might seem worlds apart, but both are about caring for something bigger, about stewardship.
"Whether I'm on the court or working on conservation, I see it all as part of the same mission."
Mark Short, the Chef de Mission, emphasised that their selection was unanimous and heartfelt.
"Brendon and Alanna represent the very best of the Cook Islands. They're inspiring leaders with compelling personal stories who demonstrate unwavering dedication to their sport and community.
"Their selection as flag-bearers recognises not just their achievements, but the mana they carry as individuals."

Dolphins superstar Herbie Farnworth appeared to suffer a horrific injury on Friday night in a huge blow to his NRL club and potentially his country. The 25-year-old showed his class early in the clash with the Warriors in Auckland when he beat two defenders to cross the line and open the scoring in just the fourth minute for his 12th try of the season (see below). With seemingly nothing on, the Englishman produced a huge step off his right and then his left to beat two attempted tackles before putting on the afterburners and accelerating into open space. 'Now Farnworth has done it again, he's unstoppable. (Hamiso) Tabuai-Fidow is there … Farnworth has done an injury!' Warren Smith said on Fox League. 'He's torn a hamstring. Can you believe that? This is potentially devastating for not just this game, but the Dolphins' season. He's gone. 'The old sniper got him in fresh air. He ran past (Samuel) Healey like he wasn't there … he's in about fourth gear and then boom, it just goes as quickly as that.' Co-commentator Michael Ennis then said: 'Oh this is devastating for the Dolphins. Exactly what Farnworth displayed there is what he's done all season for the Dolphins. 'Nothing on, set going nowhere, a bit of individual brilliance and class and incredible athleticism. 'And Farnworth, this close to the finals, this is a huge blow for them.' Smith replied: 'He's done a hammy as cold as you like. 'On a night when Kodi Nikorima returns from the one he did against the Rabbitohs back in round 17, they lose another of their stars.' A short time later, Farnworth was seen limping to the sheds, with Smith saying: 'That is a sad sight as he walks up the tunnel. 'His night over, potentially, depending on the severity of it and how they finish, it could be season over for Herbie Farnworth.' The Dolphins are sitting in eighth place on the NRL ladder and desperate to play finals for the first time in their short history. It will be a much tougher task without Farnworth, whose 12th try took him to equal sixth on the tryscoring charts for the season. 'Not just one of the stars, of the Dolphins but one of the genuine superstars of the NRL,' compatriot James Graham said at halftime. 'I think everybody just held their breath, it's absolutely devastating and adds to a growing injury list for the Redcliffe Dolphins. 'You've got to feel nothing but sorrow and all our thoughts go with Herbie. 'Hopefully it's not too bad but the fact he left the field needing assistance, it didn't look good.' Apart from the Dolphins' hopes of a first top-eight finish, Farnworth's England side is also hosting Australia in a three-Test Ashes series starting at Wembley in October. Plenty of fans and official accounts were taking that into account when they took to social media after the serious injury. Journalist Aaron Bower wrote on X: 'Not to alarm any England fans but Herbie Farnworth has just likely torn a hamstring playing for the Dolphins. '12 weeks to go so you'd think he'd be fit – but will he be match fit if that's his season?' The Castleford Tigers podcast tweeted: 'The sniper's got Herbie Farnworth … Just torn a hamstring playing for the Dolphins. Let's hope he's back and in good nick before the Aussies arrive at Wembley.' The NRL Allstars Podcast said: 'Terrible news for Herbie Farnworth with what looked like a severe hamstring injury. Helped from the field in what could be season ending.' League Unlimited stated: 'Massive blow! Herbie Farnworth looks like he has done his hamstring and has gone straight up the tunnel!' Another fan wrote: 'Pretty sure Herbie Farnworth just blew his hamstring and put himself out of the Ashes. English Rugby League just cannot catch a single break at the minute.' Farnworth will get scans when the Dolphins return to Queensland, but it was reported as a 'very bad hamstring' on Fox League.

PETS ON PLANES Virgin Australia has been given the green tick of approval by Australia's national food regulator to allow pets on board for domestic flights. Food Standards Australia New Zealand has just given Virgin airlines the all clear to carry small pets on board. But it's taken a while to get here. See, under aviation regulations, an aeroplane is considered a restaurant, and since we're not normally allowed to bring pets into restaurants, Virgin had to get the rules changed to allow pets in the cabin which has stirred up some mixed feelings. Pets will have to be a certain size and weight must stay in a pet carrier and would only be allowed in specific rows so that people who don't want to be near animals can book a seat away from them. Virgin says we could have pets flying by the end of the year, but that the final say on each flight will rest with the pilot. MOLLIE O'CALLAGHAN Aussie swimmer Mollie O'Callaghan has snagged her 11th world championship gold medal! Winning the women's 4x200m freestyle relay in Singapore last night, O'Callaghan has now equalled Ian Thorpe's record of 11 world championship gold medals for the most by an Australian, not too shabby hey. BMX KID 11-year-old BMX racer Penny has just taken out a junior BMX World Championships title this week, all the way in Copenhagen, Denmark. Penny competed against 77 other girls from around the world. She was chased down by competitors from Japan and Colombia who came away with second and third, but they were no match for Penny, who came out on top by 1.3 seconds. It's a whole lotta pressure to be on top but Penny has a special way of preparing for her races. The journey to Denmark has been no small feat. She's had to keep up with a dedicated training schedule 6 days a week! And she has no plans to stop. HEAVIEST STICK INSECT First up, to a new species of stick insect discovered in Far North Queensland. Researchers reckon it could be the heaviest insect in all of Australia, coming in at 44 grams, or about the same weight as five $1 coins. BIGGEST LIGHTNING Now to a world-record-breaking lightning flash in the US. Yes, spanning 3 states, this lightning flash covered a bit of ground. But there's a twist, it actually happened in 2017, but only now has the tech caught up to allow scientists to properly put all the data together, and see it in 3D. PONY SWIM And finally to dozens of wild ponies going for a big swim in the Assateague river in the US. This is the 100th annual Chincoteague pony swim, a tradition which started as a way to auction young foals and raise money for the local fire department.

Sydney jockey Jason Collett has an appetite for more Group 1 success after breakout year
The evolution of Jason Collett sits on the precipice of entering its most significant phase. Collett, one of racing's quiet achievers, has been riding in Sydney for the past decade but there's a sense the Kiwi-born hoop is riding as well as ever. This week alone, the 34-year-old has ridden seven city winners – headlined by a four-timer at Royal Randwick last Saturday. It helped cement Collett's best-ever finish in the Sydney jockeys' premiership, a second behind James McDonald, with a new career benchmark of 74 city winners for the campaign. Collett is quick to identify Stefi Magnetica and Group 1 Champagne Stakes runner-up Within The Law as two of those 'better horses'. Just this week, he got the chance to jump back aboard Within The Law as the Bjorn Baker-trained filly had her first trial this preparation at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday. Baker has aspirations of aiming Within The Law at Sydney's Princess Series with a Group 1 Flight Stakes tilt on the agenda on October 4 where she is an $8 third elect. • Rosehill Turf Talk: Mitch's big throw at stumps on $151 shot Within The Law saves her best work for race day with Collett keen to see her back at the races. 'She doesn't show a lot in trials or a lot in trackwork either so there isn't really a great deal to get excited about after a trial,' he said. 'We gave her a nice hitout and she was pushed out, that's the norm with her. 'It would be great to get a Group 1 with her and the Flight Stakes would be the target and we know she will run the mile. 'The 1400m and a mile is going to be her and those early races could potentially be a bit sharp.' Stefi Magnetica gave both Baker and Collett the biggest wins of their careers when she won the Group 1 Doncaster Mile on Day 1 of The Championships. Another big spring campaign looms. 'She is going to head towards weight-for-age racing now because she has won two of the biggest handicaps (including the Stradbroke),' Collett said. 'I have no worries she will be able to do it. Pictures: Getty Images While Group 1s are sweet, Collett has made a habit of making his presence felt on regular occasions in town in recent seasons. He isn't one to set specific premiership targets at the beginning of a season but the carrot of finishing second in the Sydney title race for the first time added fuel to his late form surge. A midweek treble at Warwick Farm helped Collett eclipse his previous season best of 72 Sydney winners and edge out Zac Lloyd (67 winners) for the runner-up spot. 'When it got to the last month and a half and I thought I was obviously close enough to Zac, I thought we will try and get second if we can,' Collett said. '(wife) Clare and I had a family holiday booked in early July but in saying that, as it evolved, I thought if we were close enough it would be good to get. 'As it turned out it ended up being quite comfortable in the end.' • Schiller gets green light for early spring return Collett can pick up where he left off and get the new season off to a flying start aboard the Chris Waller-trained Narbold in the Capitivant @ Kia Ora Benchmark 72 Handicap (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Waller runners will make up half of the field in the opener with Narbold ($4.20) only shaded by Amusing ($2.90 favourite) in betting. Collett partnered Narbold two starts ago when a close second behind Centenario in a 1550m event at Canterbury before the gelding finishing fourth behind Amusing at the same track and trip last start. 'He just seemed to find one better when he loomed up two starts ago off a good tempo,' Collett said. 'His run last start was good when he was ridden on speed and I think he is better when he's ridden a bit quieter. 'From the barrier he should get a soft run in what looks to be a small field.' Picture: Bradley Photos The Richard and Will Freedman-trained Cold Brew mirrors Collett's hot streak with the emerging talent set to hunt three straight wins in the Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1400m). Cold Brew, a $4.80 chance, has put together victories at Hawkesbury and Newcastle and deserves another crack in town. 'He's in a Midway horses where there is a few older horses there but he's progressive,' Collett said. 'I am looking forward to him. 'The ground will no doubt be a question mark for every horse but he is going well and when I rode him two back he won easily. 'He was tough last start when they got to him and he was a bit green but he is going well.' • NSW racing in the hands of weather gods Collett is hopeful King Taurus ($15) can bring his polytrack form to town in the TAB Highway Class 3 Handicap (1200m) while he's happy to wait patiently for the chance to pilot Catch The Glory ($15) late in the card. The Jason Coyle-trained Catch The Glory ($15) is second-up in the Congratulations Chris Waller Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m). 'I think Catch The Glory is a good ride,' Collett said. 'She was out of her grade last start but had been trialling up really well. 'She is out of Zousain so should handle the wet and I think she is going well this horse.' Racing is expected to take place on another heavy track in Sydney with rain forecast on Friday and race day. Few ride wet conditions better than Collett. 'I don't have any secret to it, it's just get them to travel and balance and if they get through it, they get through it,' Collett said.
