Transporting New Zealand has launched a set of resources raising awareness about the 'Chain of Responsibility' provisions in the Land Transport Act, that can result in serious fines for those who influence truck drivers to breach transport rules.
The national road freight association, Transporting New Zealand, is calling on all parties across the supply chain to play their part in preventing speeding, breach of work time rules and overladen trucks.
Transporting New Zealand has launched a set of resources raising awareness about the 'Chain of Responsibility' provisions in the Land Transport Act, that can result in serious fines for those who influence truck drivers to breach transport rules.
Transporting New Zealand Chief Executive Dom Kalasih says that it isn't just truck drivers with road safety responsibilities.
'If your conduct contributes to truck drivers exceeding speed limits, breaching work time rules, or operating over-weight vehicles, you can be liable for a fine of up to $25,000 under the Land Transport Act.'
'This is relevant to everyone from transport company directors, cargo owners, processors, and ports. All those supply chain parties whose instructions, expectations and facilities can contribute to non-compliance.'
'While it is ultimately the responsibility of truck drivers and road freight businesses to ensure they are operating safely and compliantly, the Chain of Responsibility provisions recognise that other parties are often in a position of power when it comes to getting freight delivered.'
'Transporting New Zealand has always maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards deliberate non-compliance by transport operators, and that remains unchanged.'
Kalasih says he hopes that the Chain of Responsibility resources will encourage conversations between transporters, their clients, and transport facilities like processing plants and ports.
'Issues that really put road freight companies under pressure include last minute timing and delivery changes, unrealistic ultimatums from supply chain partners, and a lack of weighing facilities or parking facilities.'
Kalasih would like to see supply chain partners have clear chain of responsibility policies, and increased use of written contracts with appropriate protections for transporters.
'If all parties across the supply chain play their part, it puts truck drivers and road freight companies in the best position to deliver the freight task safely and efficiently.'

For the first time the return on investment for legal aid has been calculated. The report undertaken by consultancy firm Deloitte, commissioned by the Law Society found that for every dollar spent, there was a benefit worth $2.06. The benefits include reduced justice system cost through more efficient proceedings, and savings to households and the government as a result of decreased family violence. The report was commissioned as part of the Law Society's submission to the Ministry of Justice, which is consulting on changes to the legal aid system. The Government and the legal sector agree the current scheme is under pressure, and that demand is increasing, while fewer lawyers want to take on cases funded through legal aid. The Ministry of Justice has proposed options for the system including improving incentives for junior counsel to provide legal aid, reducing expenditure on specialist reports - such as alcohol and drug reports - and introducing a bulk funding mechanism where groups of lawyers, or firms, could be contracted to provide a specified volume of cases for a fixed price. Rethinking How Schools Prepare Students For Work

A timely report released by the Food and Fibre Centre of Vocational Excellence (Food and Fibre CoVE) on the back of the Government announcing stronger vocational pathways, urges a shift away from outdated concepts of "transitions" between school and work, calling instead for a more integrated, flexible, and future-focused approach to education and employment pathways in New Zealand. This is the third and final phase of Food and Fibre CoVE's Secondary School Pathways and Transitions to VET and Employment Project, and it presents a compelling case for reimagining the so-called 'secondary-tertiary-employment transition' as a more holistic and responsive school-to-work interface. The report draws on case studies, expert interviews, and extensive policy review to showcase promising practices in the food and fibre sector and beyond. 'The idea of a 'transition' suggests a one-off handover from school to something else,' said education specialist Arthur Graves, who co-authored the report with Skills Group. 'But young people aren't just moving between systems, they're on a journey that involves continuous progression. We need to stop treating education and employment as silos and start building connected pathways that reflect real life.' The report proposes a system that spans Years 12–14, where dual enrolment becomes the norm and students have access to a wider range of curriculum and funding options that support more flexible, individualised learning journeys. It calls on government, industry, and education providers to adopt a coordinated, value-based approach that treats the school-to-work interface as both a skills pipeline and a value chain for the nation. 'If we want young people to thrive – and if we want a productive, future-ready workforce – we need to think beyond just getting them from school to tertiary education,' Arthur added. 'The real journey is from school to work. That's where lives are shaped, and where industries like food and fibre find their future leaders.' The case studies in the report highlight how schools, tertiary providers, and industry partners across Aotearoa New Zealand are reshaping the connection between education and employment. They showcase a range of innovative approaches – from school-led ecosystems and industry-driven models to regionally embedded partnerships and integrated curricula. Each example brings the report's key themes and recommendations to life, offering practical, real-world solutions already making a tangible impact on young people, their communities, and the industries they are preparing to enter. Garden shed, garage building rules to be loosened

The government has anounced rule changes for garden sheds, garages and backyard studios. Under the new rules single sheds or building structures under 10 square metres can be as close to your property boundary as you like. Single storey detached garages or studios up to 30 square metres will only have to be a metre back from the boundary with the neighbour with no building consent required.
