Four, including three of family, die in tragic bike crash in Odisha
NUAPADA: In a tragic road mishap, four people, including two minors, were killed following a head-on collision between two motorcycles on NH-353 near Palsipani Chhak on Saturday evening.
Four others critically injured in the accident which took place under Komna police limits. The deceased were identified as Lalit Sabar (40), his sister Sunaphula Sabar (25), daughter Dileswari Sabar (7) and Kshira Rahul (35). The injured are Roshan Sabar (15), Lembubati Sabar (32), Naresh Sabar (5), and Hitesh Sabar (35).
The accident occurred around 5.30 pm when Lalit, along with five family members, was travelling on a single motorcycle to Banjari village to witness the Rath Yatra. His bike collided head-on with another coming from the opposite direction, leading to a devastating crash that left all eight riders seriously injured and unconscious on the roadside.
Residents rushed to the spot and helped shift the injured to Nuapada district headquarters hospital in ambulances. Doctors declared Lalit, Sunaphula, Dileswari and Kshira dead. Roshan's condition was reported to be extremely critical and was referred to VIMSAR in Burla for advanced treatment. The remaining three are currently undergoing treatment at the DHH.
Komna police reached the accident site. 'Postmortem is scheduled for Sunday, following which bodies will be handed over to the families,' informed Tarbod outpost sub-inspector Gauri Shankar Das.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday ordered a major administrative shake-up following the stampede near Shree Gundicha Temple in Puri which claimed three lives and left around 50 people injured. Mishra will also continue as Principal Secretary, Finance Department, and Chairman, IDCO. The CM has also engaged former Puri Collector Arvind Agarwal as the overall in-charge of the Rath Yatra. The administrative action came swiftly after the stampede sparked nationwide outrage. Within hours, Puri Collector Siddharth Sekhar Swain and Puri SP Vinit Agarwal were removed from their posts. Additionally, DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi have been suspended from service. DIG STF Pinak Mishra has been appointed as the new Puri SP. Despite his promotion to DIG rank, Mishra has been directed to function as SP during the Yatra, citing the critical nature of the role. Sources confirmed he assumed charge within hours of the transfer order. To ensure full transparency, Majhi has ordered an administrative inquiry into the incident, to be conducted by Development Commissioner Anu Garg, a senior officer known for her firm administrative approach. The inquiry will aim to determine lapses and recommend corrective measures. Some of the most significant upcoming events are Sandhya Darshan (evening darshan) on July 4, Bahuda Jatra (return car festival) on July 5, Suna Besa (golden attire of deities on chariots) on July 6 and Niladeri Bije (deities return to main temple) on July 8. These events attract lakhs of devotees, with the Suna Besa expected to draw maximum people. "The congregation may exceed 15 lakh people this year for the Suna Besa," a temple official said.

Puri Rath Yatra Stampede: Congress demands resignation of Chief Minister and Law Minister
Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) The Odisha Congress today demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, holding the state government entirely responsible for the Saradhabali stampede that claimed the lives of three devotees. A fact-finding team constituted by Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Bhakta Charan Das visited Puri and conducted a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to the stampede near the three chariots at the Gundicha Temple. The team comprising former PCC President Prasad Harichandan, former Minister Jagannath Patnaik, PCC Vice President Santosh Singh Saluja, and former Minister Nagendra Pradhan visited the District Headquarters Hospital to assess the condition and treatment of those injured in the incident. The members expressed shock and sorrow upon learning that two seriously injured patients—whose legs were completely severed—were discharged without receiving adequate medical treatment. Reiterating their demands, the Congress team called for special compensation of Rs.50 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs.25 lakh for those seriously injured. Holding the state government wholly accountable for the tragedy, the team asserted that the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and Law Minister should step down on moral grounds, as the responsibility for managing the Rath Yatra rested with them. Puri (Odisha) [India], June 29 (ANI): Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Sunday described the stampede during the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri that left at least three people dead as an 'unfortunate incident.' He said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered an inquiry and assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible. 'It is an unfortunate incident. Three people have died. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has already ordered an inquiry. He has already spoken about the incident on social media and has personally apologised. He has asked Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania to visit the spot. Action will be taken against those responsible for this,' said Harichandan. Meanwhile, Congress leader and party in-charge for Odisha, Ajay Kumar Lallu said, 'The incident is very unfortunate. Millions of people took part in the Rath Yatra. The state government should have made proper arrangements to prevent a stampede.' 'There has been a lapse in security and arrangements. May the departed souls rest in peace and the injured recover soon,' he added. Speaking on the circumstances that led to the tragedy, Puri District Magistrate Siddharth Swain said, '... Today, there was an incident in which due to a sudden surge in crowd at our high density points, people complained of suffocation, so from around 4:20 am to 5:40 am, around 15 devotees were transferred to the hospital, out of which 12 devotees were discharged after general treatment, but 3 of them died.' 'The cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem...' he said. Earlier in the day, Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania reached the Gudicha Temple to assess the situation after the stampede during the Rath Yatra. Following the incident, Odisha Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi were suspended for negligence of duty. According to a press note by the Odisha Chief Minister's Office, a tragic incident occurred during the world-famous Rath Yatra in Puri, as overcrowding led to the unfortunate demise of three devotees. Expressing deep sorrow, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased devotee. The Chief Minister ordered a detailed administrative inquiry under the supervision of the Development Commissioner and instructed the transfer of the District Collector. SP Chanchal Rana has been appointed as the new District Collector, while Pinak Mishra has taken charge as the new Superintendent of Police. The Chief Minister reaffirmed that Rath Yatra is a source of pride for Odisha and assured strict action against those responsible for the mishap. He emphasised that such incidents must not recur, ensuring the safety and sanctity of the festival in the future. CM Mohan Charan Majhi apologised and sought forgiveness from the devotees, directing the authorities to initiate action against those responsible. Posting on social media platform X, Chief Minister Majhi said, 'Due to the intense eagerness among devotees to have a glimpse of Mahaprabhu at Sharadhabali, an unfortunate incident occurred because of the resulting jostling and chaos. Personally, my government and I seek forgiveness from all devotees of Jagannath. We express our condolences to the families of those devotees whose lives were lost at Sharadhabali and pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath to grant them the strength to bear this profound sorrow.' He added that an investigation will be conducted into the security lapse, and action will be taken against those responsible. 'This negligence is unforgivable. An immediate investigation into the security lapse will be conducted, and I have directed that necessary steps be taken to initiate exemplary action against those responsible,' Majhi's X post read. The stampede, in which at least three people died and several were injured, occurred early this morning near the Gundicha Temple in Puri. During the annual Rath Yatra, a massive crowd of devotees pull the holy chariots of the three deities - Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Shubhadra, which are taken to the Gundicha Temple, a short distance from the Jagannath Temple. The three deities spend a week at the Gundicha Temple before returning to Jagannath Temple. This year, the Rath Yatra commenced on Friday. (ANI)
