Anandiben's tenure set to be longest by any UP guv post independence
No other Uttar Pradesh governor has completed six years in office post independence though Sir Maurice Garner Hallett was the governor of the United Provinces from December 6, 1939 to December 6, 1945 when India was under British rule.
Patel is the second woman governor of the state. The only other woman to grace the post was Sarojini Naidu who served as the governor of United Provinces from August 15, 1947 to March 2, 1949.
After taking oath as the 28th governor of Uttar Pradesh on July 29, 2019, Patel has worked in and outside Raj Bhavan, setting out her priority areas that include the strengthening of Anganwadi Kendras, vaccination against cervical cancer and eradication of tuberculosis.
Patel has distributed pre-school and health kits to nearly 35,000 Anganwadis and pushed awareness campaigns against cervical cancer for girls in the 9-14 year age group, launching drives for HPV vaccination, those aware of the development said.
As the chancellor of state universities, her efforts have led to 16 out of 34 state universities getting A++, A+ and A NAAC rankings and 9-10 universities getting women vice chancellors in the state. She has ensured additional UGC grants for strengthening about 14 state universities. These include an additional grant of ₹600 crore to six ( ₹100 crore each) and ₹120 crore ( ₹20 crore each) to six other universities of Uttar Pradesh.
While undertaking visits to districts, Patel has turned proactive on several occasions and reviewed the implementation of central schemes. She has interacted with ministers and given them a lesson or two and shared her experiences.
Patel completed her five-year term on July 29, 2024 and continues in her office. Will she continue as the governor? The governor holds office during the pleasure of the President. Article 156 of the Constitution of India provides: '(1) The Governor shall hold office during the pleasure of the President. (2) The Governor may, by writing under his hand addressed to the President, resign his office. (3) Subject to the foregoing provisions of this Article, a Governor shall hold office for a term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office. Provided that a Governor shall, notwithstanding the expiration of his term, continue to hold office until his successor enters upon his office.'

'Disgusting, makes me sick': White House sparks outrage for use of Jet2 song praising ICE deportations
The White House Wednesday posted a clip on X, formerly known as Twitter, showing handcuffed people being escorted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) onto a GlobalX flight. It used the voiceover of a British airline advert to seemingly mock a group of migrants being deported. In the video, handcuffed undocumented people are seen being escorted by blurred-out Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials onto a GlobalX flight – an airline provider used by ICE. The shocking post is captioned: 'When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation. Nothing beats it!' Thanks! ICE is deporting all criminal illegal aliens & and there is no crisis at the border." The post continued: "It's that deporting illegal aliens glow." — WhiteHouse (@WhiteHouse) The White House drew backlash on social media after posting the meme applauding President Donald Trump's aggressive deportation agenda. The viral video sparked outrage for appearing to parody a British airline advert while mocking a group of migrants being deported. The Jet2 vacation meme, which originally circulated on TikTok, repurposed the song Hold My Hand to show travel fails with a humorous twist. "This post honestly makes me sick," Glynne wrote on Instagram. Jess Glynne said on her Instagram story: "My music is about love, unity, and spreading positivity—never about division or hate." Social media users also expressed their outrage at the post, including one user who tagged Jet2 and asked, 'y'all ok with this?' While another wrote, 'Disgusting.' 'The White House make me sick using the Jet2 sound for an ICE deportation video. How can any decent human being support this?' wrote another person. The backlash from Glynne comes amid growing concern over the administration's hardline immigration policies. President Donald Trump has ordered his government to remove millions of migrants without legal status as part of an aggressive mass deportation policy. His administration has increasingly leaned on social media, often using memes and viral content to shape public opinion and bolster support among conservative voters. President Trump recently signed legislation allocating $170 billion toward border and immigration enforcement, with $45 billion earmarked for detention efforts—even as illegal border crossings have sharply declined. Under the new law, ICE is set to receive a staggering $76.5 billion over the next five years, nearly 10 times its current annual budget. Trump has vowed to deport millions of immigrants living illegally in the U.S.

With BJP eyeing Punjab, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini reaches Sunam on Udham Singh's martyrdom day
Patiala: With BJP hoping to improve its electoral performance in Punjab, Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini reached the state's Sunam town on Thursday to pay tributes to the revolutionary Udham Singh on his martyrdom day. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During his visit, Saini offered floral tributes at Udham Singh Memorial, planted a sapling, and toured the Udham Singh Museum, where he viewed photographs, letters, and memorabilia associated with the martyr. Sunam is the birthplace of the Ghadarite. Saini also recorded his thoughts in the visitor's book and met members of Udham Singh's family, accompanied by Hardayal Singh, who presented a memorandum of their demands. Addressing a public gathering at Sunam, Saini said, "It was an honour to visit the birthplace of Shaheed Udham Singh." He recalled the Jallianwala Bagh massacre orchestrated by the British on Baisakhi in 1919. "After 21 years of perseverance, on April 13, 1940, Udham Singh shot dead Michael Francis O'Dwyer (the lieutenant governor of Punjab at the time of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre) on British soil, avenging the massacre. He ultimately sacrificed his life for the nation. Revolutionary Udham Singh's courage, sacrifice, and determination remain unparalleled. It is because of countless sacrifices by heroes like Udham Singh and Bhagat Singh that we live in a free India today," he added. Saini claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was committed to building the India of the martyrs' dreams. "We all must work together to realise the vision of the freedom fighters for an independent and prosperous nation," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In response to media queries, Saini criticised the Punjab govt for failing to fulfil promises made to people. "The govt has shown people mere illusions. Just as they misled the people of Delhi, who have now understood their reality, the people of Punjab are also realizing the same," he said. After his tribute, Saini attended a public meeting organised by BJP leader Daaman Bajwa on Sangrur Road, where Punjab BJP leaders extended a warm welcome. Udham Singh's family members, including Hardayal Singh and Aman, Punjab BJP acting state president Ashwani Sharma, BJP leader Arvind Khanna, general secretary Dayal Sodhi, Punjab BJP secretary and event organiser Daaman Bajwa, Sunam district president Amritraj Chattha, and others were present at the meeting.

Himachal cabinet clears Rs 92 lakh Mercedes for Governor amid fiscal crunch, proposes OBC quota in ULB polls
Even as Himachal Pradesh reels under a mounting fiscal deficit projected to cross ₹1 lakh crore in 2025–26, the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led cabinet on Thursday approved the purchase of a new Mercedes-Benz worth ₹92 lakh for Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla. The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister. 'The Mercedes currently being used by the Governor has completed its service life. We have decided to procure a new vehicle for him,' said Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan. Governor Shukla is presently using a Mercedes 350 purchased in 2019, during the previous BJP government when Acharya Devvrat held the gubernatorial office. Prior to that, the Raj Bhavan had a Mercedes 250, acquired in 2013. A senior official in the Governor's House said, 'We followed due process, including mechanical inspection, and sent the proposal to the state government. It's for the government to decide. So far, we haven't received any formal communication.' The decision comes days after a war of words between the CM and the Governor over the drug menace. Shukla had warned that Himachal could become another 'Udta Punjab' if narcotics weren't curbed, prompting Sukhu to urge restraint, saying such remarks were unbecoming of a constitutional authority. In a significant electoral reform, the cabinet approved reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections. So far, reservation was limited to SC/ST communities and women. A commission will soon be set up to collect ward-wise population data of OBCs to finalise seat reservations. There are 76 ULBs under the state's Urban Development department. The last elections were held in March 2021, and the next are due in 2026. The cabinet also recommended to the Governor to convene the monsoon session of the Vidhan Sabha from August 18 to September 2. Other key decisions • A two-year upper age relaxation was granted to aspirants appearing for the TGT and JBT recruitment exams conducted by the Himachal Pradesh Rajya Chayan Aayog. • One seat per course will be reserved for orphans in government, aided, and private technical institutions, including ITIs, polytechnics, and pharmacy colleges. • To bolster healthcare in tribal and remote areas, 290 new ASHA workers will be appointed. • Five English and two Hindi Law Officer posts will be filled in the state secretariat. • Three Research Officer posts were sanctioned for Integrated Tribal Development Project offices in Bharmour, Pangi, and Spiti. In response to this season's flood-related devastation, the cabinet approved ex post facto rent support for families in relief camps: ₹5,000/month in rural and ₹10,000/month in urban areas, for up to six months, through DBT. To monitor excise operations, two Home Guards and a State Taxes and Excise Officer will be posted at each distillery, bottling, and brewery plant, with intra-district staff rotation mandated. The cabinet approved auction of 10 minor mineral quarries in Kangra and re-auction of 11 in Bilaspur, expecting ₹18.82 crore in revenue and a curb on illegal mining. To promote investment, a new Tourism Investment Promotion Council, chaired by the CM, will clear proposals over ₹50 crore within 30 days. The cabinet approved a HIM BUS CARD system to streamline concessional travel benefits offered by HRTC. It also decided to launch Phase-II of the Himachal Pradesh Sadbhawana Legacy Cases Resolution Scheme from September 1 for three months, aiming to resolve 30,000 legacy tax disputes, including VAT on petroleum up to FY 2020–21. A one-time legacy policy was also cleared to regularise unregistered construction equipment vehicles. Owners can register by paying the due tax and 50% of the penalty in lump sum. An estimated 2,795 vehicles are expected to benefit. The cabinet also accepted recommendations from a sub-committee led by Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani to ensure optimal use of vacant government buildings. A nodal agency will be designated to allocate such spaces to departments and public sector bodies. Uniform water tariff rates were approved for Solan Municipal Corporation, aligning all providers with Jal Shakti Vibhag's rates. Lastly, the cabinet decided to exclude the Stadium Amatar and Panchayat Ghar Bela areas of ward number 8 from the Municipal Council Nadaun in Hamirpur district.
