Decision to pull out of CAFA Nations Cup a strategic one, says coach Cklamovski
PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have officially confirmed that Harimau Malaya will not be participating in the upcoming CAFA Nations Cup, citing critical scheduling conflicts and player availability issues.
Initially, the opportunity to take part in the prestigious regional tournament, featuring top-tier teams such as Iran and Uzbekistan, was met with enthusiasm.
However, a late rescheduling of the tournament dates has now placed the competition outside of the official FIFA international window, triggering a cascade of complications.
The timing issue means clubs are no longer obligated to release players, which is a major blow for Malaysia, especially given that several of their core players are based overseas in countries like Spain, Argentina, Colombia, and Japan.
Without access to these talents, assembling a full-strength squad would be nearly impossible.
Head coach Peter Cklamovski (pic) emphasised the broader impact of the decision.
'We have players competing in some of the world's most competitive leagues. Flying them into Central Asia without proper recovery time, with tight match turnarounds and no guarantee of release - it's not just unrealistic, it's unfair to the players and the team,' he explained.
'I would never want to compromise our players' health or field a squad that don't reflect our best potential. This is a strategic decision, we're investing in long-term performance.'
Beyond player release concerns, FAM cited logistical hurdles, rising travel costs and the pressure of FIFA's 72-hour recovery rule as added strains.
The compressed match schedule in a distant venue like Tajikistan would have put player welfare and match quality at risk.
Instead, the Harimau Malaya will shift their focus to a full training camp in Kuala Lumpur this September, leveraging the official FIFA window to properly prepare for upcoming key fixtures, including crucial qualifiers against Laos and Nepal later this year.
'This isn't just about missing one tournament. It's about building the right foundation to ensure we're strong, healthy, and tactically ready for the challenges that truly matter,' added Cklamovski.
FAM expressed gratitude to CAFA for the invitation and conveyed their best wishes for a successful tournament.
'We move forward with focus. We move forward together. See you in Kuala Lumpur this September.'

Real Madrid opposes LaLiga Miami match, urges UEFA and FIFA to block plan
MADRID: Real Madrid on Tuesday denounced plans to stage a LaLiga match between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami, warning the proposal could undermine football's competitive balance and vowing to petition global governing bodies to block the move. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Monday approved the December 20 fixture at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, which could become the first LaLiga match held abroad and the first European league fixture staged in the United States. "Real Madrid wish to express to its members, supporters and football fans in general its firm rejection of the proposal," the club said in a statement, revealing they have already urged FIFA, UEFA and Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) to intervene. The club accused the RFEF of making its decision "without informing or consulting the clubs participating in the competition" and argued that staging the match in Miami "violates the essential principle of territorial reciprocity" in home-and-away league formats. Real further stated that the move would "alter the competitive balance" and grant "an unfair sporting advantage" to the clubs involved. The club also warned that approving the proposal could compromise sporting integrity and "set an unacceptable precedent," insisting any change of this nature should require "the express and unanimous agreement of all the clubs participating in the competition." The plan still requires approval from UEFA, US Soccer, CONCACAF and ultimately FIFA before LaLiga President Javier Tebas can realise his long-held ambition of taking Spanish football to the US --REUTERS

Barcelona seeking La Liga match in Miami in December
FOOTBALL powerhouse Barcelona moved a step closer on Monday to playing a LaLiga match against Villarreal CF in Miami this season. The Spanish football federation (RFEF) approved a request from both clubs to move forward with planning the first overseas contest in the history of Spain's top flight. The Villarreal-Barcelona game is scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 20, 2025. Both teams asked for the match to be moved from Villarreal's Estadio de La Ceramica to Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. "After receiving and reviewing the paperwork received, and after the approval of the board, the RFEF will pass on the request to UEFA to begin the procedures for FIFA's prior authorisation of the game at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, on December 20 2025, in accordance with FIFA's international game regulations and the applicable rules approved by the RFEF," the RFEF said in a statement Monday, per ESPN. The other federations involved – U.S. Soccer Federation, Fifa, UEFA and Concacaf – would still need to sign off on the match.
