From Pro-Pakistan To Pro-India! Major Diplomatic Success For Shashi Tharoor-Led Team In Colombia

Colombia had previously issued a pro-Pakistan statement after India's Operation Sindoor, which was disappointing to the Indian side
India's Operation Sindoor outreach has just achieved major success in Colombia. All-party Indian delegations are currently on a mission to inform the world about Pakistan's role as a terrorist state and its attempts to harm India and its civilians. The teams are travelling around the world to emphasise that India has endured Pakistani aggression for the past four decades, with the recent attack in Pahalgam being a turning point. Led by former union minister Dr Shashi Tharoor, one team is presently in Colombia.
Colombia had previously issued a pro-Pakistan statement after India's anti-terror strikes, which was disappointing to the Indian side. Tharoor addressed the media, expressing dissatisfaction with the Colombian government expressing solidarity with Pakistanis rather than the victims of terrorism. He stated, 'We will tell our friends in Colombia that there is no equivalence between those who dispatch terrorism and those who defend against it."
The Indian delegation has successfully influenced the Colombian government's stance. The Liberal Party, Colombia's largest political party, is now set to condemn Pakistan's terror policy and support India's fight against terrorism. Tharoor credited team member Milind Deora for arranging the crucial meeting with former President Cesar Gaviria, who supported India's anti-terrorism efforts. This support has significantly altered Colombia's understanding of India's perspective.

I'm also grateful to my friend and former Colombian President @CesarGaviria_T who graciously accepted my request to unequivocally condemn Pakistan and state-sponsored terrorism—on behalf of Colombia's opposition and the Liberal Party, the country's largest political party. pic.twitter.com/LWhdoFtPRf — Milind Deora | मिलिंद देवरा (@milinddeora) May 30, 2025
A source noted that this commitment from Colombia's largest party has positively impacted subsequent meetings. Cesar Gaviria's public statement compelled Colombia's leftist, pro-China government to retract its earlier condolences for Pakistani deaths. Milind Deora's connections were instrumental in changing Colombia's perception of India, said sources.
Ganti Harish Madhur Balayogi, a first-time Member of Parliament from TDP, praised the meeting with Cesar Gaviria, emphasising that it strengthened India-Colombia relations. Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha member Deora also expressed gratitude to Cesar Gaviria for condemning Pakistan and state-sponsored terrorism on behalf of Colombia's opposition.
The delegation includes diverse and experienced members like Dr Tharoor, Milind Deora, Tejasvi Surya, Ganti Harish, and Ambassador Taranjit Sandhu. Their collective efforts have been crucial in conveying India's stance, said sources.
Colombia's upcoming role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council is strategically significant. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya highlighted this, noting that Colombia's election would bolster the partnership and understanding of the security challenges India faces from cross-border terrorism. He also pointed out the potential for business and trade collaborations between the two countries, with several Indian two-wheeler companies already established in Colombia.

In a meeting with Colombia's vice minister for external affairs, sources say that BJP MP Tejasvi Surya stated Colombia needs to understand the distinction between tourists killed and terrorists neutralised. 'Both can't be equalised. I narrated how this is the stated policy of Pakistan—to bleed India by a thousand cuts. This is not guerrilla warfare. This is state-sponsored terrorism, orchestrated by the Pakistan army and ISI," he reportedly said. Surya also elaborated that India was very disappointed with the Colombian reaction. India has huge investments in Colombia and hopes to take it further. Indians don't want such a misunderstanding to come in the way of a future relationship, he said.
While most delegations will return on June 3, Tharoor's team will continue its mission, with upcoming visits to Brazil and a three-day stay in Washington DC to meet key figures in the US administration.

'Different sets of rules for Hindus and Muslims in Bengal': BJP on arrest of Instagram influencer Sharmishtha Panoli

NEW DELHI: BJP leader Agnimitra Paul on Monday directed her attack at the West Bengal government after the arrest of 22-year-old Instagram influencer Sharmishtha Panoli, alleging a lack of free speech and unequal treatment of communities in the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The remarks came after Panoli was remanded to 14-day judicial custody for allegedly making communal comments in a video on social media. Speaking on the incident, Paul said, "Kangana Ranaut very rightly said that don't make West Bengal another North Korea because there's no freedom of speech there. There is no constitutional freedom of speech in West Bengal, and there are two different sets of rules for Hindus and Muslims." She also thanked the Bar Council and Kangana Ranaut for supporting Panoli. "I thank the Bar Council and Kangana Ranaut (for standing by Panoli). Every Indian, Hindu and nationalist Muslim must stand against this injustice," she added. Paul accused the state government of selective enforcement and bias, saying, "We have seen so many posts from West Bengal lately abusing India, PM Modi, our Goddess Maa Kamakhya, after , but no action was taken... It is a clear message from the Mamata government that if you are a Hindu or a Muslim who is abusing or saying something against Muslims, you will not be spared, but if it is the opposite, no action will be taken." She urged the Hindu community in West Bengal to rise, saying, "Hindus of West Bengal also need to rise; they are sleeping under the cloud of secularism. We need to have a neutral government... The police of the state today only see a religion." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BJP leader also cited specific instances of alleged bias, claiming, "No action was taken against Anubrata Mondal, a TMC leader who abused a police officer... The Mamata government only works for the Muslims, not for Hindus." On Panoli's arrest, Paul said, "Sharmishtha Panoli repeatedly apologised and also deleted the post and inspite of it, 's police, being proactive, went to Gurugram and arrested her." She further accused the Mamata-led state government of ignoring similar actions by others: "Mahua Moitra repeatedly abuses our Goddess... but no action taken... Court stated that riots of Murshidabad was done by TMC leaders... No action was taken... Mamata Banerjee doesn't consider Hindus of any importance."* According to police sources cited by PTI news agency, Panoli's video criticised Bollywood actors for their silence on Operation Sindoor. The post went viral, sparking backlash, and was subsequently deleted by Panoli, who also issued an apology. Despite this, she was arrested in Gurugram on Friday night after reportedly evading multiple police summons. Panoli, a law student originally from Kolkata's Anandapur area and currently studying at a university in Pune, has been charged under sections related to promoting enmity between groups and creating religious disharmony.

Khurshid, a senior politician and former foreign minister, is currently in East Asia as part of an all-party parliamentary group led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha. Posting on X, Khurshid wrote, 'When on mission against terrorism, to carry India's message to the world, it's distressing that people at home are calculating political allegiances.
