Just a 'normal' weekend - what's happened to Boxing Day football?
Congested calendar and lack of weekends
The crux of the matter is the deal the Premier League struck with the Football Association around the congested calendar. In exchange for scrapping FA Cup replays - another move condemned by the traditionalists - the Premier League agreed to restore the FA Cup fifth round to a blank weekend, having previously been shunted into midweek. It also agreed to not schedule matches on the same weekend as the sixth round. At that point, it committed to a 38-game season comprising of 33 weekend dates and five in midweek. That is what the Premier League produced on Wednesday. The five midweeks are at the beginning of December, January and March, one towards the middle of February and, as outlined, another on 30 December. The only way to have 33 weekend dates in 2025-26 is for 27 December to be one of the regular match weekends. That's because the competition is starting on 16 August – any earlier would have reduced the gap from the end of the Club World Cup to just four weeks. Manchester City tried, and failed, to get their first match of the season moved, as it was. There is also a hard stop end to the season of 24 May as the Champions League final is a week later and the World Cup follows after that.
Matches played over three days?
The Premier League is a global brand. Not every place where they have a TV deal celebrates Christmas - and hardly any of those countries play matches on Boxing Day, so 27 December seems an easier fit.The base kick-off time for that match week is 15:00 GMT on Saturday, 27 December.Games can be moved – but not all of them. In theory, all four of the televised kick-off slots used on Boxing Day last season, including the 20:00 GMT one, could be used.Matches could also be shown on the Saturday, or Sunday, 28 December. This is all still to be decided.Package E of the new TV deal that comes into force in August includes reference to a rather ambiguous "six additional matches" without saying what that means. But there is no mention anywhere in the deal about a weekend when all 10 games will be screened. So, while any game moved to Boxing Day will have been done specifically for TV purposes, not all those that remain on 27 December seem likely to be shown live. For those who devour Boxing Day football from morning until night, there is some good news. The EFL will have a full programme across their three divisions – and all their games are streamed. And, in 2026-27, Boxing Day falls on a Saturday - and given it's already a weekend, the chances of a return to a full match programme on that day is high.

Joe Root not focused on record chase after latest run landmark
Joe Root insisted reeling in Sachin Tendulkar is not a top priority after the former England captain moved up to second on the list of all-time Test run-scorers. Root overtook three greats of the game in one fell swoop with a magnificent 150 against India in the fourth Rothesay Test on Friday, leapfrogging Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid. Only Tendulkar, with a mountainous 15,921 runs, is ahead of Root, who has closed to within 2,512 with Ponting among those insisting the Little Master might not be out of reach for the Yorkshireman. While Root, who has amassed 21 centuries since turning 30 four years ago, is aware tongues will be wagging about whether he can catch Tendulkar, he is adamant it is not the be-all and end-all for him. 'I can't avoid it – they're everywhere,' Root told Sky Sports. 'It is easy to get caught up in this stuff but at the end of the day, you're playing against India in one of the biggest series there is. 'It's not about you, it's about winning the game and getting your team in a position where you can follow through on that. You're not doing your job if you're concentrating on yourself. 'When you look at the names there on that list, they are all people that, as a kid, growing up, that's who I would try and be in the garden, on the street, on the driveway, at my local club. 'Even just to be mentioned in the (same) sentence as these guys is a bit of a pinch-yourself moment.' Root's form since the start of 2021 has been breathtaking, amassing 5,586 runs at an average of 56.42, and the 34-year-old admitted some introspection during Covid was a major reason behind his uptick. 'I actually went away during that period and asked can I get some footage off Sky and just look at modes of dismissal (to see) if there were any trends,' added Root, who on Friday was stumped for only the second time in his 286 Test innings. 'One thing that I've done within that period is actually try and look at the game slightly differently. 'At the start of my career, a lot of it was based on my technique. Whereas in this second phase of things, it's been more about managing risk and thinking how can I eliminate as many modes of dismissal as possible with the highest output? 'It's very easy to get caught up, get too emotional, either get too hard on yourself or feel too sorry for yourself. You've got to see it for what it is, be very honest about it, and then just try and put that into practice.'

Liverpool announce permanent Diogo Jota tributes including sculpture at Anfield
Reds forward Jota died in a car crash along with his brother Silva in Spain on July 3, aged 28. Tributes have been paid at Anfield with flowers, scarves, cards and jerseys being laid around the stadium. Liverpool confirmed that physical tributes have been removed and stored, while floral tributes will be composted and used in flower beds at Anfield and training facilities. Tributes have been paid to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva (Peter Byrne/PA) The remaining items will be recycled and used to create a permanent memorial sculpture at Anfield. Additionally, players will have a 'Forever 20' emblem – referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number – printed on their shirts and stadium jackets for the season. A club statement said: 'The club is now able to provide details on how it will create more permanent tributes moving forward. The thousands of physical tributes outside Anfield have been gradually removed over the course of the last week and carefully separated and safely stored. 'Floral tributes will then be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites, including Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and AXA Melwood Training Centre. 'The remaining artefacts will be recycled by a specialist company and used to help create a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield. Liverpool have announced plans for permanent tributes to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'In the meantime, a temporary area of reflection has been created at Anfield so people can continue to pay their respects.' The club announced earlier in the month that Jota's squad number 20 had been retired in his honour across all levels, including the women's and academy teams. Liverpool paid tribute to Jota and Silva during their friendly against Preston on July 13, where supporters chanted Jota's name. Respects will also be paid ahead of the Reds' remaining pre-season games, where a floral tribute will be laid before kick-off at their games in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Anfield. Liverpool's Premier League season kicks off with a meeting against Bournemouth on August 15 and a main commemoration is set to take place with a special fan mosaic and a minute of silence.
