New Delhi: The heavy showers on Saturday affected traffic movement across the capital. Motorists made heavy weather of waterlogged roads on the day of Raksha Bandhan festivities and they fumed and fretted as they were trapped in traffic jams for hours.
Congestion was reported on Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, Shastri Bhawan, RK Puram, Moti Bagh, Lodhi Road, Kalindi Kunj, Rajouri Garden, Dhaula Kuan, Ghazipur Border, Chhatarpur, Dwarka, Wazirabad, Kidwai Nagar and stretches of MB Road near Sainik Farm and Saket metro station. Traffic was also affected in pockets of Najafgarh, on Rohtak Road, Press Enclave Road and on both carriageways of Anuvrat Marg near Qutub Minar Metro Station, among other areas.
Social media platform X was replete with grievances of exasperated motorists. Rajiv Bahl posted: "Stuck on Mahipalpur Road near Fortis, coming from Vasant Kunj — it's been over an hour with no movement. There's no sign of any traffic police." Another commuter, Shailender, reported that traffic was at a standstill on Church Road in Vasant Kunj. Ramandeep Singh, also caught in the mess, claimed it took him three hours and 40 minutes to go from Punjabi Bagh to Sainik Farms.

"Not a single traffic policeman was in sight the entire way," he alleged, disappointed at the lack of on-ground management. Others noted that even ambulances were stuck in the traffic snarls.

Around 8.30am, police issued an advisory: "Due to the Raksha Bandhan festival weekend and recent rains causing waterlogging at GTK Depot, Jahangirpuri and Adarsh Nagar, traffic on Old GT Road is likely to be severely affected.
To avoid congestion, commuters are advised to avoid taking old GT Road. Delhi Metro services are operational and can help minimise travel disruptions. Please plan your route accordingly.
" The situation was similar at many other places. The Azad Market railway Underpass on Ram Bagh Road was affected, hitting traffic movement there. Diversions were put in place for vehicles coming from Rani Jhansi Road, Barf Khana, Pul Mithai and Veer Banda Bairagi Marg.
Zakhira railway underpass too went under and diversions had to be created near Inderlok Chowk, with traffic from Shastri Nagar and KD Chowk being redirected towards Chaudhary Nahar Singh Marg.
Adding to the woes were numerous vehicle breakdowns on key routes. In one instance, traffic was disrupted on Ring Road on the carriageway from Lajpat Nagar flyover to Ashram due to the breakdown of a loaded truck near the Lal Shahi traffic light.

Heat alert in UK: Warnings issued across parts of England; here's how to stay safe

Image credits: getty images The time to spend some time indoors seems to be here in the UK. As temperatures soar to mid-30s Celsius, amber heat health warnings have been issued across parts of England. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced heat health warnings for the East Midlands, West Midlands, the East of England, London and the South-East from 9 am on Tuesday to 6 pm on Wednesday. Yellow warnings have been issued in the south-west, Yorkshire, the Humber, north-west and north-east for the same days. The agency said the heat was likely to have a significant impact on health and social care services, including potential for a rise in deaths, specifically among those over 65 and with health conditions. Additionally, forecasters have said constant days of high temperature could lead to the UK recording its fourth heatwave of the summer of 2025. A heatwave is considered when a location has at least three successive days with maximum temperatures exceeding a designated value, as per the Met Office. 'These kind of temperatures can result in serious health outcomes across the population … so it is important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun," said Dr Paul Coleman, a public health consultant at the UKHSA. 'If you have friends, family or neighbours who are vulnerable, it is important to ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? According to the NHS, heat exhaustion has symptoms such as feeling faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, clammy skin, nausea or vomiting, and muscle cramps. Confusion, no sweating, temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius, hot and dry skin, nausea or vomiting, loss of consciousness, and convulsions or seizures as signs of a heatstroke. How to stay safe? Parts of Europe burn as millions are facing record heat

Wildfires burned in parts of Europe on Tuesday as millions of people across the continent struggled to adapt to the new reality: record summer heat. Temperatures in some areas soared past 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Last year was the hottest year on record in Europe and globally, the monitoring agency said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Undo Scientists warn climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, making parts of Europe more vulnerable to wildfires. The burning of fuels like gasoline, oil and coal releases heat-trapping gasses that are the main driver of climate change. Spain and Portugal: Numerous wildfires Outside Madrid, firefighters had largely contained a blaze that broke out Monday night, authorities said. It killed a man who suffered burns on 98% of his body, emergency services said. Live Events Elsewhere, firefighters and nearly 1,000 soldiers were battling blazes in regions including Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Andalusia and Galicia. Thousands of people evacuated homes and hotels, including holiday-goers at beaches at the southern tip of Spain. Regional authorities said Tuesday afternoon that some of those evacuated from beach locations could return to their hotels. In Portugal, more than 700 firefighters were working to control a fire in the municipality of Trancoso, about 350 kilometers (217 miles) northeast of Lisbon. Smaller fires were burning further north. Turkey: Thousands evacuated, some on boats Firefighters largely brought a major wildfire in northwest Turkey under control, the forestry minister announced, a day after the blaze prompted hundreds of evacuations and led to the suspension of maritime traffic. The blaze broke out on agricultural land in Canakkale province. Fanned by strong winds, it rapidly spread to a forested area, then to a residential one. It forced the evacuation of 2,000 residents - some by sea - and led to 77 hospitalizations due to smoke exposure, officials said. Firefighters were still battling two other wildfires in Manisa and Izmir provinces in western Turkey, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said on social media. France: A red alert for heat The national weather authority placed most of France's southern region on the highest heat warning, with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) expected for the second consecutive day. The heat will spread to the northeast, including the Paris region, Meteo France said. Some municipalities offered free or discounted access to public swimming pools. Most regions in central and southern France were monitored for the high risk of forest fires, after a deadly blaze last week in the Aude region. Officials said the fire was under control but will not be fully extinguished for weeks, with hot spots at risk of reigniting. Greece: Multiple evacuations for fires In Greece, seven major wildfires mostly in the west forced multiple evacuations, destroying homes and businesses, while flames reached the outskirts of the country's third largest city. The fire service scrambled resources to the port city of Patras where a forest fire burning through mountain forest threatened an industrial area. High winds hindered firefighting efforts on the islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia, where authorities were on standby to evacuate tourist resorts which were not in immediate danger. Other severe fires burned in several areas on the western Greek mainland and on the island of Chios in the eastern Aegean Sea. Nationwide, the civil protection service issued more than 20 mobile phone alerts Tuesday with evacuation orders and guidance. Britain: Another heat wave Temperatures were expected to hit 34 Celsius (93.2 Fahrenheit) on Tuesday and Wednesday, especially in southern parts of England, including London. Officials define a heat wave as temperatures exceeding 25 Celsius for most of the U.K. - and 28 Celsius in London and its surrounding area - for three consecutive days or more.

Swollen Kosi floods Madhepura villages

Madhepura: Surging waters of the eastward-bound Kosi river are threatening riparian areas, flooding dozens of villages in the Alamnagar and Chausa blocks of Madhepura district. Displaced residents are seeking higher and safer ground. Monsoon floods are an annual ordeal here with communities facing them for decades as the river flows through the region between Beldaur in Khagaria district and Kursela in Katihar district. Emerging from beneath the Kosi barrage in Nepal, the river flows southwards before bending eastwards from Beldaur to Kursela where it merges with the Ganga. Heavy monsoon rain in Nepal and the sub-Himalayan region have swelled the Kosi, posing a serious threat to villages in these two flood-prone blocks. The river flows without a northern bund and discharge from the barrage has surged to 2 lakh cusecs. Floodwaters have entered Fulaut east and west panchayats, Jhandapur Basa and Morsanda village in Chausa block. "We have received such information and the administration is keeping a 24x7 tab on the situation," said Chausa BDO Brajesh Kumar Deepak. "The region will be declared a flood-hit area after receipt of a formal ground report," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Khapur, Muraut, Sukharghat, Ratwara and Pandauli villages in Alamnagar block are also affected. Knee-deep water has entered homes, forcing residents to leave with their belongings. "People have been demanding an extension of the Eastern Kosi bund up to Kursela for a long time, but local representatives turned a deaf ear," said social activist and advocate Paras Kumar. A school in Jhandapur Basa has been inundated while village roads are submerged and damaged. With grazing land under water, cattle feed is scarce. Although the local administration has deployed boats, residents are seeking more for emergency night operations. District magistrate Taranjot Singh said the administration is on alert. "The administration has already held a meeting with officials and local public representatives to extend relief to the affected people," he added.
