Mbappe lifts Real Madrid past Osasuna in La Liga opener
Kylian Mbappe struck from the penalty spot as Real Madrid beat a dogged Osasuna 1-0 on Tuesday to make a winning start in La Liga under new coach Xabi Alonso. The France striker, last season's European Golden Shoe winner, scored early in the second half after he was fouled in the area by Osasuna defender Juan Cruz. It was enough to seal the points in Alonso's first game in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Madrid now unbeaten in their opening fixture of a league campaign since 2008. "You can see that Kylian wants to do even more after this first year where he did great things," said Alonso. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 31 goals in his first season in Spain, and is now wearing the number 10 shirt vacated by Luka Modric after the Croatian left for AC Milan last month. "I don't know if it's linked to the new number or not, or simply to his desire to win, but he wants to improve individual and collective performance and inspire his team-mates," added Alonso. "You can see his desire every day. Today he created those decisive moments that enable us to win matches." Madrid had a shortened pre-season after their run to the Club World Cup semi-finals in July, but Alonso has been adamant that would not be used as an excuse after their request for the Osasuna match to be postponed to a later date was rejected. "To start on the right foot is key in La Liga. We know we weren't well prepared," Madrid defender Dani Carvajal told DAZN. "But we basically didn't suffer and it was a complete display." Spain international Carvajal came off the bench for his first league appearance since October after a long-term knee injury, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold in the second half. - New faces in Madrid - Alexander-Arnold made his La Liga debut after his move from Liverpool, with former Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen and left-back Alvaro Carreras other summer arrivals included in the starting line-up. Madrid though were without England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who is expected to be sidelined until October as he recovers from a operation to solve a recurrent shoulder issue. Madrid are looking to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era after relinquishing both their domestic and European crowns last season. Alonso's side had to show patience against an Osasuna team that finished ninth last term, with the hosts largely restricted to long-range efforts from centre-backs Huijsen and Eder Militao in the first half. Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera was equal to both, while Mbappe failed to connect cleanly after being picked out by Vinicius Junior before he curled another shot wide as Madrid struggled to break down their opponents. But Mbappe grabbed the only goal six minutes after half-time after he went down following a clumsy challenge by Cruz as he tried to cut past the defender. Mbappe duly got up and running for the new campaign as he sent Herrera the wrong way from the spot. Alonso handed 18-year-old Argentine winger Franco Mastantuono his debut midway through the second half as Madrid controlled the game and seldom looked troubled. Ante Budimir headed over in a rare opportunity for Osasuna and Mastantuono was denied late on by Herrera. Osasuna finished the match with 10 men with Abel Bretones sent off in stoppage time for throwing an arm to block the run of Gonzalo Garcia. mw/nf

Josh Allen gives his thoughts on a potential Gabe Davis reunion with the Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have a connection to a former friend. Ex-Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis is reportedly taking a free-agent visit in Buffalo on Wednesday. That could very well mean he re-signs with the Bills, but we still have some time until we find that out. Davis has had other visits this offseason as well, including one on Tuesday with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Davis 26, was a 2020 fourth-round pick of the Bills and spent his first four NFL seasons in Buffalo. In that time, Davis had 163 catches for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also set an NFL record with four TD grabs in a single postgame contest while with the Bills. Since leaving Buffalo after the 2024 season, it has not gone well for Davis. A three-year deal he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars was cut short after only one year because of injury. But if Davis can regain that form with the Bills he previously had? It could be a strong match for the 2025 season. At least it sounds like quarterback Josh Allen thinks so. "Love that guy, he was awesome when he was here," Allen said. "We haven't stopped being in contact since he left." Allen's full thoughts can be found in the clip below: This article originally appeared on Bills Wire: What Josh Allen said about WR Gabe Davis taking visit with the Bills

Caleb Williams, Bears starters will play in preseason finale against Kansas City Chiefs
Caleb Williams made his debut in Ben Johnson's Chicago Bears offense this past Sunday, and the former Heisman Trophy winner and 2024 No. 1 overall pick teased his franchise-changing potential, which was often hard to locate during his rookie season. That was against a Buffalo Bills team playing practically only backups, though. Johnson is trotting out Williams and other Bears starters again Friday night, this time on the road and against a perennial Super Bowl-contending Kansas City Chiefs team that will kick off the teams' preseason finale with its ones as well. "We'll go ahead, and we'll play [the starters]," Johnson said Tuesday on "Up & Adams." He added: "We're going to get through a couple days here of practice, and we'll determine for how long. But we need to go through this." Williams' first drive against the Bills couldn't have gone any better. Backed up at his own 8-yard line after an ill-advised kickoff return, the former Oklahoma and USC quarterback connected with both of his tight ends, a Johnson staple. First he found rookie Colston Loveland, then he dialed up a 28-yard throw over the middle for Cole Kmet. That set the tone for a game-opening scoring drive that saw Williams pile up 97 passing yards — he also overcame an offensive holding penalty — on 5 of 6 passing. He capped off the series with a 36-yard touchdown. Facing a 3rd-and-5, Williams beamed a well-timed pass to wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus, who galloped in space, gobbled up yards after the catch and reached the end zone. Williams' second drive didn't end in points. In fact, he completed only 1 of 4 attempts during the series, except his third-down pass to Rome Odunze that was a tad wide probably could have been reeled in by the second-year receiver. Still, he finished the night 6 of 10 for 107 yards and a touchdown, complete with a celebratory fist pump. That performance calmed some nerves in Chicago following reports of Williams' continued inconsistency in training camp while he poured into Johnson's complex offensive system. Johnson didn't play Williams in the Bears' preseason opener. The former Lions offensive coordinator — the engineer of Detroit's league-leading 33.2 points per game attack last season — later explained that he thought there was more value in the 80-100 additional reps his quarterback collected in practice than he would have participated in had he played in the Aug. 10 exhibition against the Miami Dolphins. Williams was finally on display over the weekend, and the initial results dominated headlines. Both he and Johnson will be drawing more attention against the Chiefs Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
