He replaces Datuk Azman Adnan who will go on mandatory retirement effective today.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, in a statement yesterday, said he is confident that with over 35 years of experience in the education sector, Mohd Azam will be able to further strengthen the country's education system and drive it towards greater excellence.
'This appointment is also in line with the nation's aspiration to uphold education based on Madani values, for the progress of the country and the holistic development of Malaysian children. Congratulations and best wishes in fulfilling this responsibility,' he said.
Mohd Azam began his career in public service on March 1, 1989, as an education service officer (PPP).
He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Malay Language, a Master's Degree in Linguistics, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Strategic Communication from the Universiti Malaya. — Bernama

Police said that some 18,000 protesters took part in Saturday's rally calling for Anwar to step down over the rising cost of living, among others. The rally-goers had gathered at various locations in the capital before marching to Dataran Merdeka.

Secondary education now mandatory in Malaysia
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has taken a major step in strengthening its education system with the passing of the Education (Amendment) Bill 2025, which makes secondary education compulsory for all Malaysian children. Tabled by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, the bill was passed in the Dewan Rakyat late last night after being debated by 34 Members of Parliament from both the government and opposition benches. Fadhlina described the move as a historic and vital reform for the country's human capital development. 'Education is the birthright of every child. This amendment ensures that right is extended to the secondary level,' she said. The bill amends the Education Act 1996 (Act 550) by introducing a new Section 32A, which mandates that all Malaysian parents whose children reside in the country must enrol them in a secondary education institution and ensure they remain in school until completion. Non-compliance may result in a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both, upon conviction. The amendment applies to a broad range of registered institutions, including national curriculum private schools, religious secondary schools, international and expatriate schools, and Chinese independent schools. Secondary-level institutions registered under any other written law are also recognised. Fadhlina noted that exceptions, such as homeschooling, would be considered on a case-by-case basis with valid justification. 'We are open to broadening the scope of exceptions, as long as no child is excluded or discriminated against,' she said. She also highlighted the importance of engaging unregistered educational institutions, saying more outreach is needed to ensure parents and school operators understand their responsibilities under the new law. 'Our concern is that when schools are not registered, the legal burden shifts to the parents. That's why it's crucial for these institutions to register with the ministry,' she said. 'With a standardised curriculum in place, we can offer clearer guidance and address issues like bullying more effectively.' The Education Ministry is actively assisting unregistered schools in transitioning into the formal system and has engaged state governments to support the registration process. This bill marks a significant leap toward equitable access to education, paving the way for a more inclusive and competitive generation of Malaysians.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) is set to introduce the Public Cleansing Reform under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), marking a major shift in the national cleaning management landscape. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said key reforms under the initiative would include dust-free road efforts, the use of electric vehicles (EVs) for night cleaning operations, and the introduction of a Single Window Payment Monitoring System. 'Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will table the 13MP in Parliament tomorrow, and among the core pillars to be announced under the plan is the Public Cleansing Reform. 'I believe that with the advancement of technology, the cleaning sector must also adapt to new innovations that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of daily operations,' he said in his speech at the 2025 Cleaners' Day Appreciation Ceremony here today. The ceremony was organised by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of cleaning personnel in maintaining the cleanliness and harmony of public spaces. Nga also proposed that the event be held annually to honour the dedication and contributions of cleaning workers in the country. He said the work of cleaning personnel was noble and urged society to shift its perception and extend proper respect to the sector. Commenting on enforcement measures, he said the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing (Amendment) Bill 2025, which was passed in the Dewan Rakyat last week, would enable courts to impose fines and community service orders on individuals found guilty of littering in public areas. 'Therefore, I urge all Malaysians to be more responsible about cleanliness, not out of fear of punishment but out of love for the country. Let us cultivate a sense of collective responsibility for a cleaner, healthier and more prosperous future,' he said. During the event, SWCorp was awarded a certificate by The Malaysia Book Of Records (MBR) in recognition of the 'Heaviest Bird Structure Made From Recycled Materials.' The initiative was part of SWCorp's efforts to promote sustainability awareness through art and waste reuse.
