DPS: One killed in two-vehicle crash on US 385 near Channing

Yahoo25-04-2025

A Dalhart man died Thursday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 385 about 12 miles south of Channing, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash occurred around 12:55 p.m. April 24.
Preliminary investigation indicates a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 34-year-old George Acker of Dalhart, exited a rest area and attempted to merge onto US 385. Acker failed to yield the right of way and entered the path of a northbound 2010 Freightliner truck tractor towing a semi-trailer. The semi-trailer struck the driver's side of the pickup, authorities said.
Acker, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver of the Freightliner, a 53-year-old from Vega, was also wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
Weather conditions were reported as clear and cloudy, with dry road conditions at the time of the crash.
The Texas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate.

US vehicle market slows as industry braces for tariffs impact

Sales Summary According to preliminary estimates, US Light Vehicle (LV) sales grew by 1.5% year-on-year (YoY) in May 2025, to 1.46 million units. May 2025 had one extra selling day compared to May 2024, meaning that sales fell by 2.2% YoY on a selling day-adjusted basis. The daily selling rate was measured at 54.2k units/day in May, down from 56.7k units/day in April. The annualized selling rate was estimated at 15.3 million units/year in May, down from 17.4 million units/year in April. Retail sales were estimated at 1.2 million units, up by 2.2% YoY, while fleet sales were thought to total 261k units, down by 1.6% YoY. OEM Analysis GM once again led the market, with total sales of 258k units and a market share of 17.6%. However, a notably strong performance from Toyota Group meant that the gap between the Japanese OEM and GM was under 18k units in May, the smallest difference since April 2024. Toyota Group's volumes (240k units) were its highest since May 2021. Even more remarkable was Ford Group, which enjoyed its highest monthly sales total since May 2019, with 215k units sold. At a brand level, Toyota led the rankings – as has been the case in each month of the year to date – on 207k units. However, Ford was close behind on 203k units, with Chevrolet in third on 163k units. Model Analysis For a second consecutive month, the Ford F-150 led the sales rankings, on 46.3k units. The Toyota RAV4 came in second, on 45.3k units, while the Chevrolet Silverado claimed third place in May, on 40.8k units. This was the first time since October 2024 that the Silverado had occupied such a lofty position. The Honda CR-V and Toyota Camry completed the top five. The Camry made its first appearance in the top five bestselling models since February 2023. Segment Analysis Compact Non-Premium SUV's market share was 21% in May, according to initial estimates, its lowest share of the year to date. However, the segment's market share was still up by 0.6 pp YoY. Midsize Non-Premium SUV accounted for 15.6% of the market in May, down around 0.2 pp from its April share, while Large Pickup enjoyed its highest share of 2025 so far, on 14.5%. Indeed, only one month since the beginning of 2023 (December 2024) has seen the segment claim a larger share of the total market. Enticing offers on models such as the Silverado seem to have driven an improved performance for Large Pickups. David Oakley, Manager, Americas Sales Forecasts, GlobalData, said: 'While sales in May were not poor by any means, the month's results were a reflection of the way we have been expecting the market to develop since the picture regarding tariffs started to take shape. After the initial surge in sales activity in March and April, the decline in the selling rate in May appears to indicate that many of those consumers who decided to pull purchases ahead to avoid potential tariff-related pricing increases have now done so. We are also observing sharp differences in performance between OEMs. Certain automakers are starting to see problems with low inventory, which in some cases may be linked to hesitancy over how to respond to the imposition of tariffs. Similarly, brands that have tended to rely on fleet sales to boost volumes may be struggling in the current circumstances, as a higher priority is being put on more profitable retail sales – but retail sales depend to a great extent on the curb appeal of the models themselves. Finally, Premium makes are also seeing somewhat more subdued sales, although the reasons for this are varied. An over-reliance on EVs is a significant headwind for some brands, while others may be suffering from economic uncertainty andtariff-related disruption'. Forecast Updates We currently expect 2025 sales to come in at around 15.2 million units, down from almost 16 million units in 2024, and representing a YoY decline of around 5%. While the extent to which sales will slow in June remains to be seen, we forecast the YoY comparison to turn negative, as prices increase and supply chain problems start to ramp up. The second half of the year is set to see a more significant slowdown in sales, as OEMs gradually adjust pricing to reflect the new realities of the trade environment. Still, the situation remains extremely fluid, and changes in the administration's policy could mitigate the worst effects of tariffs, in which case there is some upside risk to our forecast. False SA school calendar goes viral – from a known fake news website

A viral article and subsequent post claiming that South Africa's Department of Basic Education has 'revamped' the 2025 school calendar is false. The department has confirmed the post is fake and urged the public to verify information through official government channels. The fabricated article failed multiple generative AI tests. It claims that new term dates have been introduced, and that 'South African students rejoice' as a result. It uses a stock image, originally posted on the photography website Alamy in 2015, to depict overcrowding in rural classrooms, which has appeared in dozens of legitimate education articles. Official response: the calendar is unchanged In a public statement, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) said: 'We have become aware of an online article claiming that the school calendar for 2025 has been changed. This is fake news. The annual school calendar is set in advance and gazetted by the national Minister of Basic Education.' The DBE confirmed that the school calendars for 2025, 2026 and 2027 are available on its official website at The official 2025 calendar, published in the Government Gazette, was confirmed in 2023. It outlines the following term dates: Second viral hoax from the same website The article is the second fake story from the same website to gain traction this month - again forcing a government department to step in. Earlier this week, News24 debunked the same site's false claim that South Africa was facing '14 hours of daily load shedding". These articles are also replicated across copycat websites, which follow the same formula to publish unverified content about schooling, grants, and public sector jobs - hoping one will break through into public discourse. In the context of AI-populated websites, many articles are obviously fake. However, when shared via WhatsApp and social media without obvious giveaways, such as poor spelling or irrelevant images, many users repost them without pausing to verify the facts. The danger behind the shares The site's apparent goal is to generate traffic for ad revenue, rather than undermine government operations. But the impact is far-reaching. The Department of Basic Education notes that school calendars are critical planning tools for teachers, learners, and families. Disinformation about term dates disrupts planning, causes confusion, and undermines trust in official communication channels. Any change to the national school calendar would require a formal notice signed by the minister and published in the Government Gazette. The Department of Basic Education advises the public to verify school calendars and related information via:

Explore the Tennessee outdoors this summer with these adventure-ready trucks

Pickup trucks are great vehicles for outdoor exploration and activities. Plenty of truck models are designed to be capable and reliable. That said, some models are significantly more capable than others. Factors such as ground clearance, suspensions, tires, and more play roles in a truck model's ability to conquer tricky terrain. Luckily for Tennesseans, there are at least three pickup truck models that stand out among the pack when it comes to being adventure-ready. 2025 Toyota Tacoma 2025 Honda Ridgeline 2025 Chevrolet Silverado The models listed excel in either off-road capability, overall reliability, or a mixture of both. They appeal to drivers with different needs and come in several trims offering even more customizability. Few trucks come equipped for off-roading straight out of the factory the way the Toyota Tacoma does. The Tacoma has built a reputation for longevity and reliability since its debut in 1995. Its international counterpart, the Hilux, is also known for its durability. The 2025 Toyota Tacoma starts at $31,590. It comes in a total of six gas and five hybrid trims. Some off-roading trims include the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX, and Trailhunter. These trims include suspension and tire upgrades as well as special off-roading add-ons straight from Toyota, eliminating the need for modifications by off-roading enthusiasts. The Tacoma has around 9.4 inches of ground clearance. It has a 60.3-inch truck bed. Toyota's midsize truck is an affordable pickup truck that's designed to withstand some of the challenges presented by living life in the great outdoors. Not every driver wants a tough truck that's made to withstand harsh terrain and driving conditions. Some folks want the utility of a truck bed along with a smooth ride quality and enjoyable driving dynamics. Enter the Honda Ridgeline. The 2025 Honda Ridgeline starts at $40,150. It comes in four trims including an off-road Trailsport trim. The 2025 Ridgeline has 7.64 inches of ground clearance. It has a 64.0-inch truck bed, which is slightly larger than the Tacoma's bed. Honda's pickup truck features a unibody design, unlike the typical body-on-frame designs of popular pickup truck models. This allows for a smoother more SUV-like ride quality. It has a "roomy cabin, useful features, and superior road manners" according to Kelley Blue Book. The Ridgeline is a great truck for Tennesseans who want an enjoyable daily driver with utility. Ranking lists of full-size SUV usually feature three models at the very top of lists: the Ford F-150, the Ram 1500, and the Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado may not be the definitive best-selling full-size truck in America like the F-150 or as refined as the Ram1500, but it still has plenty to offer. The 2025 Chevrolet Silverado starts at $37,000, making it more affordable than the midsize Ridgeline base model. It comes in a whopping 10 trim levels including Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss off-road trims. Chevrolet's full-size pickup truck has about 8.26 inches of ground clearance. Its bed is 79.4 inches. The Silverado has "lots of in-bed tie-down points and massive bed capacity" according to Edmunds. So, this American pickup is a great option for Tennesseans searching for an affordable full-size truck with plenty of bed space.
