Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: In the wake of the tragic UPSI express bus crash in Gerik, Perak, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has urged express bus drivers in the state to strictly adhere to speed limits and prioritise passenger safety at all times. Expressing condolences to the victims' families, the Kinabatangan MP said the incident, which claimed the lives of university students, should serve as a wake-up call for all operators and drivers nationwide, especially in Sabah.
Advertisement 'Don't let time pressure justify reckless driving. Every passenger is a life entrusted by their loved ones. One moment of carelessness can cost lives,' he said. The Sabah Umno Chief also called on express bus companies to review driver schedules to avoid fatigue and ensure focus behind the wheel. 'Risk management must come before profit. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) should step up inspections on buses and driver records. 'Safety must not be optional. Let's not wait for a similar tragedy to hit Sabah before action is taken,' he said in a statement. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Bus in Gerik crash clearly speeding, say police

Police said the road barrier penetrated the front left section of the bus, killing the students seated there. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The bus in the Gerik crash that killed 15 university students was clearly speeding based on dashcam footage from a car, say police. Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said investigators have received the footage from the owner of the car, whose statement will be taken soon, Harian Metro reported. 'The recording clearly shows how the bus was speeding. What made matters worse was when a road barrier penetrated the front of the bus after it toppled over. 'That is why passengers seated on the left side of the bus were among those who lost their lives, because the barrier penetrated all the way to the passenger seats. 'We leave it to our investigating officers to go through the recording and take the owner's statement,' said Noor Hisam. He added that the statements of survivors would also be taken, after several of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students claimed the bus was speeding before the crash. He said the site of the crash was a downhill stretch of a hilly road and that the accident occurred around midnight after some rain. 'Based on my observation, there were no clear road markings and the area is very dark. We're still probing whether the cause of the crash was due to negligence or technical issues.' Noor Hisam also said most of the survivors were found in a drain next to the barrier, while the bodies of most of those killed were still in the bus after the crash. A total of 15 UPSI students died from the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding. The bus was carrying 42 students, the bus driver and his assistant. A couple, along with their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were travelling in a Perodua Alza the bus collided with.

Bus driver in Gerik fatal crash had 18 traffic summonses, say cops

Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri announced that a special task force would be formed to investigate the crash. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police revealed that the bus driver involved in the crash that killed 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) yesterday had a record of 18 traffic summonses. Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri said 13 of the summonses were for speeding, three for not wearing a seatbelt, one for not having a third brake light, and another for involvement in a previous accident, Sinar Harian reported. Earlier, Yusri announced that a special task force would be formed to investigate the crash. It will comprise the police, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, the road transport department, the Land Public Transport Agency, and other relevant bodies. 'We will complete the investigation papers as soon as possible. Our investigation will be thorough and cover all aspects, including the driver's past offences, background, activities and career history,' he said. Fifteen UPSI students were killed when the bus travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, crashed into the rear of a Perodua Alza, veered off the road, and overturned along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding early yesterday morning.
