8 years of GST: CBIC celebrates ‘Sundays on Cycle'
Shashank Priya, Member (GST), CBIC, highlighted the transformational impact of GST on the Indian taxation system and emphasised how GST has unified around 30 different indirect taxes into a single, transparent tax structure, thereby simplifying tax administration and compliance for both businesses and citizens.
Priya also apprised participants of the significant benefits extended to small taxpayers through initiatives such as the GST Composition Scheme and the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) Scheme, which reduce compliance burden and foster ease of doing business.
The flagship event was organised at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi, with more than 100 CGST commissionerates also participating across the country, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The Mumbai and Pune Zone of CGST also roped in Bollywood celebrities like Sunil Shetty, Milind Sonam and John Abraham.
At the venue in New Delhi, a dedicated GST help desk 'Know About GST' was set up to engage with participants and to answer queries about GST.
To enhance accessibility and outreach, a wide array of informational brochures on key GST topics were distributed, and digital kiosks equipped with QR codes were strategically placed across the venue allowing participants to scan and download GST resource materials directly to their mobile devices.
Additionally, vibrant hoardings and banners highlighting key GST reforms and taxpayer-centric initiatives — especially for support for MSMEs, GST registration process, etc. — were prominently displayed.
Together, these efforts created a comprehensive and engaging environment, aligning with CBIC's vision of brining GST closer to people through public engagement and education.
This initiative is yet another example of CBIC's commitment to engaging with taxpayers and the general public through innovative and inclusive outreach programmes, celebrating both national health goals and the ongoing journey of GST reform, as India marks eight successful years under this landmark tax regime.

Why is Trump not imposing extra tariffs on China just like India for importing Russian oil? Is he scared? VP Vance admits...
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump imposed 25 percent tariff on India for buying Russian oil. On being asked why he isn't imposing same tariff on China for buying Russian oil, there is no straight answer. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance has admitted that imposing tariffs on China is a very difficult decision. JD Vance has said that after imposing a huge tariff hike on Russian oil imports from India, US President Donald Trump is now considering similar measures against China. But he stressed that deciding to impose tariffs against China would be much more difficult and politically sensitive. Why did Trump not impose tariff on China for importing Russian oil? It is clear from the statement of Vice President JD Vance that Donald Trump is afraid of China's retaliation. In fact, when Trump imposed tariffs on China for the first time, China immediately retaliated and reduced the supply of those rare minerals to America, which are most needed by America's defense industry. The current situation is that American defense companies are struggling to make weapons, and many companies have been forced to extend the delivery date of weapons by two to three months. What did VP Vance say on the issue? That is why JD Vance has admitted that 'the relations between the two countries also affect many other issues.' That is, America is looking after its own interests and is avoiding imposing tariffs on China due to fear. Speaking on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures, Vice President JD Vance said, 'imposing tariffs on China is being considered, but no decision has been taken yet.' Vance said, 'The President (Donald Trump) has said that he is thinking about it, but he has not taken any concrete decision. The China issue is a little more complicated because our relationship affects many other things that have nothing to do with the Russian situation.' How much oil did China purchase from Russia in July? China's imports of Russian crude oil crossed $ 10 billion in July, the highest monthly level since March. However, the figures so far in 2025 are 7.7% lower than in 2024. Vance said that the President is 'reviewing his options' and 'a decision will be taken at the right time.' At the same time, senior advisor Peter Navarro warned that such tariffs 'can also harm America.' This statement of JD Vance comes after the recent 25 percent additional tariff imposed by the US against India. Due to which the total tariff rate on Indian goods has increased to 50%. This additional duty will come into effect from August 27.

New DDP indicators, GST collections reveal trends, cultural shifts in districts
Lucknow: The addition of 50 indicators to planning department's existing 26 categories, based on which a district's domestic product estimates (DDP) are calculated, has brought forth interesting revelations about the trends, behaviour and culture of various districts of the state. Final District Domestic Product Estimates for 2023-2024 were released a couple of months ago. DDP estimates of 2023-2024 include all 76 indicators, including GST collection through parlours and other items and collection of commercial tax. As the idea of including these indicators was mooted just a year ago, it might not show the holistic picture of any district's progress. However, it does throw light on the trend that the districts are gradually following. Going by one such indicator, women in Gautam Budh Nagar are more conscious about their looks than women from any other district. Though it is expected that not all the parlours are registered for goods and services tax (GST), the calculation is based on GST collection from parlours throughout the state. A total of Rs 11.21 crore was collected as GST from parlours in Gautam Budh Nagar, which was 38.45% higher than Noida's GST collection in 2022-2023 which stood at Rs 8.09 crore. Neighbouring Ghaziabad stood second with GST collection of Rs 7.24 crore, which was 34.02% higher than the collection of Rs 5.4 crore in 2022-2023. GST collections from parlours indicate that women in the state capital occupy third spot in beauty consciousness. Lucknow's GST collection from parlours in 2023-2024 was Rs 4.7 crore, 33.76% higher than the collection of Rs 3.51 crore in 2022-2023. Lucknow was followed by Varanasi which registered a collection of Rs 3.05 crore in 2023-2024. Interestingly, Varanasi registered the highest growth of 68.07% in collection from parlours as compared to previous fiscal which stood at 1.81 crore. However, when it comes to spending on entertainment, Lucknow tops the list with GST collection of Rs 24.5 crore in 2023-2024, a huge rise of 69.93% as compared to Rs 14.42 crore in 2022-23. Noida stands in second position with a collection of Rs 16.14 crore, registering a surge of 137.27% from Rs 6.8 crore as collection in 2022-2023. Moradabad made it to the list of top three spenders on entertainment with Rs 4.46 crore GST collection in 2023-2024 from entertainment. Similarly, there are indicators like GST collection from medical stores, private medical institutions, coaching institutes, budget allocation under National Health Mission, expenditure on Swachh Bharat Mission, tap water connection under Har Ghar Jal Yojana, district wise consumption of electricity and employer's contribution under EPFO. Other key indicators include forest cover, crop production and fuel consumption. "Besides giving a refined picture of a district's performance, these indicators are also helping in gradual shift towards formalisation as district officials will encourage more GST registrations which will bring higher revenue to the govt," principal secretary, planning, Alok Kumar III said. Now, award-winning single malts to debut at all Tasmac outlets
Chennai: Premium Indian liquor lovers in Tamil Nadu will soon find award-winning single malts at all Tasmac outlets. Bengaluru-based Indri-Trini single malt whisky and Amrut Fusion single malt whisky, winners of global "World's Best Whisky" titles in 2023 and 2024, will be available in both elite and regular Tasmac shops in the coming months, sources said. The state govt amended its liquor procurement policy in 2023 to allow sourcing from other states, paving the way for six new liquor varieties, five beer brands, and eight wines to enter the market. Tasmac has fixed 3,500 per carton as the base price for out-of-state supplies to ensure local distilleries and breweries remain competitive. "Though high landed costs initially discouraged out-of-state brands, the untapped premium segment in Tamil Nadu proved attractive," said a source. Royal Ranthambore whisky and Jaisalmer gin from Radico Khaitan were introduced last year, followed by Pernod Ricard's 100 Pipers and Blenders Pride. The latest entrant, Tilaknagar Industries, is supplying Mansion House Ultra French brandy and Courrier Napoleon Green brandy, and may soon bring Imperial Blue whisky, procured from Pernod Ricard, to the state. While Tasmac officially lists 551 imported liquor brands, many are rarely available at its imported liquor shops. Tasmac officials said imported liquor suppliers do not provide liquor to the corporation despite the easy licence procedure in place, as the market for premium liquor is just 0.5% of the overall sales volumes. "However, we want to make national brands that are more sought-after in other states and globally available here," said a senior official.
