Kalinga Super Cup: We have learned from our mistakes, says MCFC's Chhangte ahead of Inter Kashi clash

Hans India25-04-2025
New Delhi: Within a span of two weeks, Mumbai City FC went from losing 0-5 in the Indian Super League (ISL) Playoffs against Bengaluru FC to slotting four goals past Chennaiyin FC to book their spot in the quarterfinals of the Kalinga Super Cup, where they will take on Inter Kashi. Mumbai had a lacklustre season throughout the 2024-25 campaign, after having entered as defending champions, but were not up to their typical dangerous attacking self.
Despite boasting an amazing defensive record which saw the Islanders end with the third least conceded goals this season, they only found the back of the net 29 times which was the lowest goal tally of a top-six team this season.
In an interaction with IANS, Lallianzuala Chhangte, who scored a brace in the opening game, revealed how the side learned from their mistakes and have started the Super Cup in the correct manner.
'We've learned from our mistakes, and it was an experience that will give us a different
perspective and that will build us as better human beings and better footballers. I want to learn from that experience. Going forward to the last match, Super Cup, I am really happy with how we performed as a team, not only as an individual, because when you see our squad, there are so many injuries inside the team and you can see we have only two foreign players available right now, like in the first match.
'But I am really happy the players who came in to fill the space fully did their job because the Super Cup is just do or die. If you lose, you are gone. So everyone knows that, and we are fully focused, and I think this is a good start. We are already focused on the next final against Inter Kashi,' Chhangte told IANS.
In just two years since they entered the I-League, Inter Kashi FC have certainly made a name for themselves. Under the leadership of Antonio Lopez Habas, the most successful coach in ISL history, they almost secured a qualification to the ISL but finished second in their I-League 2024-25 campaign.
They followed it with an incredible outing in the Round of 16 by defeating ISL runners-up Bengaluru FC via penalty shootouts. Chhangte remained adamant that they will not be underestimating Sunday's opponents.
'It doesn't matter who we are playing against, an elite team or a team in the ISL. It doesn't matter. Our approach is still the same, and Inter Kashi are a very good team, if not the best. They are one of the best teams in the I-League. So we are not underestimating them. We respect them fully, but of course, every team has their strengths and weaknesses, right?
'So we have to focus on what we can do, on where we can, you know, make them suffer. I feel it's more important to focus on our team than our opponents. So that is exactly what we are doing. We are fully recovered now, and we are ready to take the battles,' he added.
After having been eliminated in the manner they were, Chhangte described Mumbai's performance against Chennai as beautiful and claimed the game against Kashi will be even more difficult than their first game.
"After our last match in the ISL, we have not had a day off yet. I mean, yeah, we have our recovery days. We have been working really, really hard, and you can see that in the last match, how lively we were, how energetic we were and how we fought as a team was beautiful, and I hope all the players, not only the young players, continue their mindset.
'Because right now, some people might think that, oh, they're playing against an I-League team, you know, the approach that we had before has to continue in the next match, regardless of who we are playing. And we can't be, you know, complacent. We can't think that it's going to be easy. No, it's going to be more difficult than the first match. I guarantee that. So we have to be fully focused,' he concluded.

Khalid Jamil will serve as full-time India coach: AIFF

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Wednesday said Khalid Jamil has taken charge of the sen-ior men's team on a full-time basis for a period of two years with an option to extend his contract by one year depending on results. The AIFF said Jamil has signed the contract after parting ways with ISL team Jamshedpur FC. Jamil will begin his first training camp on August 15 at the Dravid-Padukone Centre for Sports Excel-lence in Bengaluru. His first assignment with the Blue Tigers will be the CAFA Nations Cup, where India will face hosts Tajikistan (August 29), Iran (September 1) and Afghanistan (September 4) in Group B. In the October FIFA Window, India will play two crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying matches against Singapore (October 9 and 14). Jamil said, 'I am both deeply proud and immensely privileged to have been entrusted with the re-sponsibility of leading our national team. 'Over the years, I've had the opportunity to train Indian players, and I've grown to understand their strengths and weaknesses intimately. These insights will be fundamental to everything we do as we prepare for the CAFA Nations Cup and the upcoming crucial Asian Cup Qualifiers against Singapore.' He has replaced Manolo Marquez, whose contract was terminated by the AIFF last month. Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia feels 'sorry' for Khalid Jamil, who has taken charge of the national football team at a time when the sport is going through a difficult phase in the country and said the AIFF preferred him because he is unlikely to make too many demands. 'We have got two world class coaches leaving, we have got Igor Štimac who coached the Croatian team, and then Manolo Marquez who is one of the great coaches with great history,' Bhutia told PTI Videos after the Fidel Castro Centenary Football Cup's exhibition match. 'If these two coaches couldn't work with the federation, then you bring people who will listen and will do what Federations says and will not come up with his own ideas and demands from the feder-ation. 'I think Jamil being a domestic coach fits into that as he is fairly new to the team. (Feel) sorry for him as well as he is taking charge of the team when it's in a very difficult situation,' he added. Jamil was chosen ahead of Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic. Taking aim at AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey, Bhutia said: 'For Kalyan, he is the right guys because Indian coaches do not demand much. At the same time he is saying that there are financial problems and today the federation has gone into such a bad situation that we don't have money to pay to the coaches as well. 'There are coaches who are national team coaches, and they are being paid by the other people, so, I don't know where all the money's gone and there are scam after scam.' Chaubey had recently admitted that club football is 'going through crisis' due to the uncertainty sur-rounding the Indian Super League, while attributing the situation to 'some self-claimed reformers with vested interests'. Bhutia responded: 'He (Chaubey) said exactly the right things but who is the head of the federation, and who is controlling football right now and that person should be responsible for the same. 'He is saying that it's in a crisis but not saying that I am (Chaubey) the head of the federation that created those crises. 'He does not understand what position he is in and the football in this country is in crisis and it is the responsibility of the federation and the president to solve those crises and if he cannot do that he should let somebody come in who can solve those crises.' Bhutia and Chaubey have shared a history of verbal spats, with the former frequently questioning Chaubey's leadership, even calling the AIFF a 'circus'.

FC Goa won because of its players, not the referee: Manolo Marquez after sealing ACL 2 spot

FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez hit back at Al Seeb coach Valeriu Tița for claiming that the Indian Super League side won the AFC Champions League Two preliminary round match because of the referee. Goa, playing its first competitive match of the season, rode on goals by Dejan Drazic (24') and Javier Siverio (52') to beat the Omani club 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Wednesday. 'We suffered too much, but finally, we showed some heart— not just the quality, but something more.'Manolo Marquez after FC Goa's win The match saw a controversial penalty decision — later reversed — in the 43rd minute, when Drazic blocked Ahmed Al-Khamisi's cross, and Al Seeb thought it was a spot-kick from a handball inside the box. The referee, Zhang Lei from China, initially pointed to the spot, but after consulting with the linesmen, changed his decision to a free kick just outside the 12-yard area. 'We saw the incident on the screen and all of us agreed that it was a penalty. If he had given it, maybe the result would have been different. Plus, there were two offside calls where our last defender and their forward were two metres apart, but he didn't flag it,' Tita told reporters after the match. 'Yesterday, I said the fans would be Goa's 12th man, but I was wrong—it was the referee.' Marquez refuted the claims, saying he understood the coach's frustration after a loss, but insisted his team won purely on merit Siverio (centre) celebrates scoring the second goal for FC Goa, one that proved to be the winner against Al Seeb on Wednesday. | Photo Credit: FC Goa Media 'From where I was, it was impossible to tell if it was a handball. Maybe, if I were on the other bench, I might have seen the hand, and I don't know if it's inside or outside the box,' Marquez said. 'I don't think that we qualified because of the referee. We qualified because maybe we were stronger, and maybe they are angry because they lost against a team that they thought they would beat.' India we did it! Straight into the AFC Champions League 2 Group Stages 😍🧡🇮🇳 — FC Goa (@FCGoaOfficial) August 13, 2025 'I think this team from Oman deserves a lot of respect. We suffered too much, but finally, we showed some heart— not just the quality, but something more,' Marquez added. 'I want to say that it's very difficult to play one match like this because but with the games we had in pre-season, we came into a game like this, and it was very difficult to play 90 minutes with such strong pressure. So, congratulations (to the team).'

UEFA rolls out banner in support of children in war zones ahead of Super Cup

UEFA rolled out a banner with the message 'Stop Killing Children. Stop Killing Civilians' ahead of the Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham on Wednesday. It was laid out in front of the teams before kickoff in the match at Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy. 'The message is loud and clear,' European soccer's governing body said in a post on X. 'A banner. A call.' It comes a day after the UEFA Foundation for Children announced its latest initiative to help children affected by war in different parts of the world — a partnership with Medecins du Monde, Medecins sans Frontières and Handicap International. They are charities 'providing vital humanitarian help for the children of Gaza," UEFA said in a press release Tuesday. UEFA has supported projects regarding children affected in conflict zones in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, Yemen and Ukraine.
