US stocks mostly down as markets digest earnings ahead of Fed minutes
NEW YORK: Wall Street's major indexes mostly pulled back early Wednesday as investors assessed key retail earnings while awaiting the minutes of the central bank's most recent policy meeting. About 15 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1 percent to 44,984.72, but the broad-based S&P 500 Index dropped 0.3 percent to 6,390.30. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite Index lost 0.9 percent to 21,120.54. These came as US retailer Target topped earnings expectations Wednesday, even as its sales slipped, while home improvement firm Lowe's similarly beat expectations too. But Target's shares were down 8.7 percent in early trading after the results, and as it named a new chief executive. Lowe's shares, meanwhile, rose 1.0 percent. Wall Street falls on Jackson Hole jitters The tech sector meanwhile remained under pressure, said Art Hogan of B. Riley Wealth Management. US tech shares slipped on Tuesday amid warnings that excitement surrounding artificial intelligence could be inflated. The main focus this week, however, is really Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech Friday morning at an annual central bankers' gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Hogan said. Markets will be closely watching Powell's remarks for signs of whether the Fed is likely to cut interest rates in September, as officials balance between inflation risks and weakness in the jobs market. But Hogan warned that Powell has tended to be 'reticent to predict what the Fed does at any upcoming meetings,' meaning investors could be disappointed. In the meantime, observers will be keeping an eye on the Fed's meeting minutes due Wednesday afternoon.

India bond yields ease after 2-day climb lures value buyers
MUMBAI: Indian government bond yields ended lower on Wednesday, reversing a two-day trend, as investors indulged in value purchase after a selloff over the first two days of the week. The 10-year benchmark bond yield ended at 6.4969%, after ending at 6.5139% on Tuesday, which was its highest since March 28. The 10-year bond yield jumped as much as 15 basis points in the past two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled sweeping goods and services tax reforms, expected to increase fiscal burden. The move also completely erased the rally that followed S&P Global's upgrade of India's rating, as traders started fearing additional supply. Despite lingering fiscal pressures, the fiscal deficit target is still achievable, a government official said. Union Bank of India has a constructive view that longer-duration bonds offer better risk-reward versus the shorter end under current conditions. 'The centre's clear signal of no supply glut and continued focus on borrowing discipline further strengthens our conviction for a favourable duration bias,' said Kanika Pasricha, chief economic advisor at Union Bank of India. India bonds fall; 10-year yield hits 4-month high as fiscal worries sap demand Immediately, investors remain focused on the minutes of the Reserve Bank of India's August policy meeting, which are due after market hours. Traders will assess the commentary for clues on the rate easing trajectory. The central bank had kept the key interest rates unchanged, even as it slashed its annual retail inflation forecast, a decision that had led to a bond selloff. Rates India's overnight index swap rates dipped in early trading hours, as traders resumed receiving floating rates after the rates rose to 2-month highs on fiscal worries. The one-year OIS rate ended at 5.5250% and the two-year OIS closed at 5.4750%. The liquid five-year OIS declined 2 bps to 5.7150%, amid receiving for a large foreign bank, traders said.

Indian rupee edges lower as dollar sales by foreign banks offset most of greenback demand
MUMBAI: The Indian rupee slipped on Wednesday, as corporate hedging and short-term speculators bolstered demand for the greenback, most of which was met by dollar sales by foreign banks. The rupee settled at 87.0650 to the U.S. dollar against its close of 86.9500 on Tuesday when it climbed the most in over a month, boosted by speculation over Russia-Ukraine peace talks. Traders said foreign banks were active sellers of dollars on Wednesday, limiting rupee depreciation despite significant hedging by importers. A rally in local equities and position squaring also helped the Indian currency recover after recent pressure, traders said. Recent weeks have seen the rupee's direction influenced by news around U.S. tariffs on India, S&P's upgrade of the nation's sovereign credit rating and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned tax cuts on goods and services. Foreign portfolio investors turned buyers of Indian assets in the past three sessions after net selling Indian markets in the last few weeks over tariff uncertainties. 'FPIs have turned steady buyers in Indian markets, encouraged by hopes that the U.S. may reconsider its plan to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports,' said Amit Pabari, managing director at CR Forex. Indian rupee to shrug off dollar strength, recent weakening bias on pause The return of foreign inflows comes even as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday accused India of profiteering from its purchases of Russian oil during the war in Ukraine. Other Asian currencies traded mixed on the day, while the dollar index was slightly higher at 98.21 as on 1549 IST. Rupee traders will also tune in to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday, which may provide clues on the U.S.'s interest rate trajectory. 'A signal that cuts may be delayed could strengthen the dollar, while any indication of looser policy may weigh on it and encourage risk-on sentiment,' Pabari added.
