
IIT-M starts 2 more BTech programmes
Chennai: IIT Madras will launch two BTech programmes in
and mechanics, and
from 2025-26.
Computational engineering and mechanics will prepare students for future digital engineering careers, where physical systems converge with computational and artificial intelligence.

It blends classical engineering knowledge with modern computational tools and will position graduates to address future complex, real-world engineering challenges.
The instrumentation and biomedical engineering programme will train students to develop next-generation medical devices by integrating core biomedical engineering with strong foundations in electrical and instrumentation engineering.
Students who clear JEE (advanced) can choose these two new programmes in the upcoming Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA) counselling. They will have a total student strength of 40 each.
"The new BTech programmes shall address all novel concepts relevant to industry 5.0, health technology, and advanced manufacturing areas," IIT-M director V Kamakoti said in a release. Both programmes offer students the opportunity to upgrade to the five-year dual degree (BTech + MTech) through interdisciplinary
.
"These cutting-edge programmes will equip students with a strong systems approach to problem-solving, blending core engineering principles with the latest technological advancements," said professor Sayan Gupta, head, department of applied mechanics and biomedical engineering, IIT-M.
In computational engineering and mechanics, students will study computational methods, including machine learning, data science, and high-performance computing, along with foundational training in solid and fluid mechanics, core electrical engineering, and material science.

They will pursue careers in aerospace, robotics, automotive, manufacturing, smart infrastructure, sustainable energy, and digital twin design.
In instrumentation and biomedical engineering, students will learn application-driven topics such as IoT, AI, and web-enabled medical technologies. It prepares graduates for roles in the medical device industry, rehabilitation technologies, and AI-driven healthcare systems.

Indore Metro rolls out smoothly, thanks to IIT-Bombay's intervention
File Photo MUMBAI: Indore celebrated a new chapter in urban commute on May 31 with PM Narendra Modi inaugurating a 6-km Metro line from Gandhi Nagar station to Super Corridor Station-3, but behind the smooth run of its first ride lies a quiet intervention from IIT-Bombay. Rewind to 2022. The concrete was not set right. Initial pile foundation tests failed. Worry lines deepened. That's when Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRCL) knocked on the doors of IIT-B, where steel met science. "They reached out in Jan 2022 when MPMRCL authorities faced a problem with the initial pile foundation design and construction," recalled Prof Deepankar Choudhury, chair professor and former head of civil engineering at IIT-B. Choudhury, who also shaped the foundation strategy for India's longest sea bridge Atal Setu , travelled to Indore with his then PhD students, Chaidul Chaudhuri and Vansittee Dilli Rao. What they found was sobering: In many piles, the concrete hadn't flowed fully to the bottom, with a shortfall in lengths. Gaps as large as two metres stared back, posing a serious risk to the entire metro superstructure. "Anything built over such uncertainty was a hazard," Choudhury said. "We proposed supplementary piles and redesigned the pile cap with detailed finite element analysis, considering customised location-specific ground conditions," Choudhury explained. The compromised piles were repurposed as auxiliary supports, their strength recalibrated by a new configuration. That is the mind beneath Indore's Metro. These findings were recently published in a leading journal of the American Society of Civil Engineers, International Journal of Geomechanics, by Choudhury and his former PhD scholars of IIT-B. Medibuddy eyes $130 million in pre-IPO
Health-tech firm Medibuddy is looking to raise $130 million in a pre-IPO round, said people familiar with the matter. It has engaged Avendus Capital as an adviser for the fundraise. Medibuddy was founded by IIT Madras alumni Satish Kannan and Enbasekar Dinadayalane. Its shareholders include a Liechtenstein royal family fund and Quadria Capital , among others. The fund raise has attracted prominent Indian and global private equity firms, as per those familiar with the matter. The health tech firm matches patients with doctors, hospitals and diagnostic service providers. However, in response to ET's email query, the company said it is not planning a $130 million pre-IPO round. "I'd like to clarify that the information outlined in your email is factually incorrect," Medibuddy said in a statement. "We have launched a structured fundraise process , led by Avendus Capital, with a target of $60 million. This includes $25-30 million in primary capital and $30-35 million in secondary, intended solely to provide a standard exit opportunity for a few early angel investors." Medibuddy also said it was not in a hurry for an IPO. "An IPO is certainly part of our long-term vision, as it is for many companies at our stage. We will actively inform you when we plan to move in that direction. For now, our focus remains on building a profitable, scalable and sustainable healthcare market leader that delivers long-term value for all stakeholders," it said.
