Arsenal win 2-1 to hand Southampton record 30th Premier League defeat

CNA25-05-2025

SOUTHAMPTON, England :Already-relegated Southampton became the first team to lose 30 times in a Premier League campaign after they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal in the season finale at St Mary's Stadium on Sunday.
Arsenal, who were already guaranteed a place in next season's Champions League after their 1-0 win against Newcastle United last weekend, secured a third successive second-placed Premier League finish.
They conclude the season 10 points behind champions Liverpool, while Southampton remain bottom with just 12 points and two wins.
"We wanted to leave the season with a positive vibe and we've done that," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told reporters.
"A big thank you (to the fans), the way they have supported the team, the club. The manner, the energy has been incredible again ... The desire that we have to make that little extra step and to be really enthusiastic."
Just when Arsenal seemed to be headed towards a 15th draw, substitute Martin Odegaard came to their rescue with a thunderous strike from distance in the 89th minute, after Southampton forward Ross Stewart had cancelled out the visitors' opener.
With newly-appointed Southampton manager Will Still watching on from the stands, Stewart had risen highest to nod Mateus Fernandes' corner past Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the 56th minute.
Left back Kieran Tierney had broken the deadlock in the 43rd minute, marking his final appearance for Arsenal in fitting fashion to beat Southampton keeper Aaron Ramsdale after being picked out by Ben White's cutback.
Arsenal created a flurry of chances as they pushed for a winner.
They wasted a golden opportunity to put themselves ahead when Ethan Nwaneri picked out White in the box, who pulled it back for Gabriel Martinelli, but Southampton right back Yukinari Sugawara was there to clear off the line.
Bukayo Saka had the ball in the back of the net but saw his goal disallowed for offside.
Despite conceding, Raya won the Golden Glove for the second consecutive season, sharing it with Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels who also had 13 clean sheets this campaign.

Man City sign Ait-Nouri from Wolves on five-year deal

MANCHESTER, England - Algeria defender Rayan Ait-Nouri has joined Manchester City from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a five-year deal ahead of this month's Club World Cup, City announced on Monday. Financial details were not disclosed but British media reported City paid a fee of around 33.7 million pounds ($45.69 million) to sign the 24-year-old, who had one year left on his Wolves contract. Ait-Nouri initially joined Wolves on loan from Ligue 1 side Angers in 2020, before making the move permanent the following year. He leaves Wolves after five seasons, having made 157 appearances with 12 goals and 19 assists. Wolves are now without two of their key players from last season, after Brazil forward Matheus Cunha's transfer to Manchester United on June 1. City finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League season and only secured a Champions League berth on the final day of the campaign. Pep Guardiola's side are next in action at the Club World Cup in the United States. Kvitova loses on day one of new Queen's Club WTA event

LONDON :Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia came from a set down to beat former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and reach the second round of the new WTA 500 event at Queen's Club on Monday. After a 52-year gap since the last top-tier women's event was held at the London grasscourt club, it was fitting that twice Wimbledon winner Kvitova opened proceedings on a court named after former British Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. After an impressive start on the pristine centre court lawn in front of a sizeable crowd, however, the Czech was unable to hold off her younger opponent who prevailed 2-6 6-4 6-4. Kvitova, who won her titles at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, made her comeback from a 17-month maternity break in February and gained entry to the tournament via a protected ranking. After holding serve in a marathon fifth game, the 35-year-old surged on to win the opening set and looked on course for only her second victory since returning. The rust was apparent though as world number 23 Haddad Maia worked her way back into the match and claimed the win. After levelling the match she got an early break in the deciding set and that proved decisive as she sealed a clash against American third seed Emma Navarro. "For sure (Petra) is won of the best players on this surface and it's a privilege to be here," Haddad Maia said. German qualifier Tatjana Maria also made it through as she beat former U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 7-6 6-2.
